I don't have children of my own yet, but I have had the blessing of living near my nephews and nieces. I have watched them grow and develop on each stage of their childhood. Part of that development is a season I love as an Uncle and as a Dentist, the transition from deciduous to permanent teeth. In this post I want to share some memories attached to this children's phase, and also share some tips about it.
Why I love this stage in kids? honestly, they look so cute missing a couple teeth, and with a mischievous smile as well hehe. That teeth transition is a sign of maturity, of the body preparing for adult life. Yes, in terms of the mouth, adulthood starts at the early age of six.

Esa transición de los dientes es un signo de madurez; del cuerpo preparándose para la vida adulta. Sí, en cuanto a la boca, la edad adulta comienza a la temprana edad de seis años.
During this pandemic, many of our family's children started going through the deciduous teeth change. For some, I was able to be there and help with the process, and for others I was far away giving directions through a video call. To this point, half my nephews and nieces have finished this stage. Yes, they can no longer see Jack Frost.

Helping my children through a videocall was the Hardest. Sofi, my niece, was battling to get her upper left lateral incisor out. It had some root still, so the tooth didn't get loose completely. Jesus on the other hand easily took his milk molars out, and only called me to celebrate the moment. I celebrated each and every single tooth they lost (and I got a little sad because they are growing too fast!)

From my siblings close by, Ina is the most insistent when she has a loose tooth. She doesn't like it, and she bothers me and her family all day to take that thing out! she is not happy until that happens, and luckily her teeth transitions have been easy every single time. I hope they remain that way until she is twelve. A particularity in her is that her transition began way too early compared to the average. That certainly scared me quite a bit, so I got her xrays done just in case. Everything was fine. Now, I just relax and let her experience her process normally even as she keeps showing signs of a prematurity.

I have told their respective Moms to keep the teeth and store them as memories for the children. I can get really upset if they lose some milk teeth. Those are partly signs of the evolution, growth, and childhood, so they represent lovely mementos. Those teeth were once their smiles, and I love the memory of them having some small teeth combined with some spaces and new teeth coming out. For me those are the best children smiles ever.

Tips and Tricks for Milk Teeth Replacement Phase
Since parents worry awfully sometimes during this phase, I want to share some knowledge and counsel regarding our precious children and their teeth:
- First of all, Let nature take its course. Don't try to pull a milk tooth out before its time!
- Milk teeth have functions, and if you take them out too early your child my end up with bite problems.
- Not all Children are the same, some will start on this phase early and others will be late bloomers. That is ok.
- If you see the permanent teeth coming out somewhere around the milk tooth, it is time to visit the dentist.
- Milk teeth have roots, but they reabsorb as the new teeth are coming out. That is why we only take crowns out.
- If those roots don't reabsorb in time, the only way to make space for the permanent teeth is through a dental extraction. Go to the dentist.
- This phase starts normally at six years old, but it can happen earlier at five or later as seven or eight.
- Boys are usually faster than girls on this. Girls tend to be late bloomers and that is why women usually pass 21 years of age and still don't see their wisdom molars out yet.
- Try not to do crazy methods to extract milk teeth. you might end up hurting the teeth coming beneath!
- The best option is to wait, give hard food children must chew quite a lot (a steak, raw carrots, apples, etc), and be vigilant of sign of the permanent tooth coming out.
- In doubt, please ask a Dentist not tiktok!

- La mejor opción es esperar, dar alimentos duros que los niños deben masticar bastante (una filete, zanahorias crudas, manzanas, etc), y estar atentos a cualquier señal de salida del diente permanente.
