Hello hivers! It is a pleasure for me to be able to share with you this space of reflection as a mother, teacher and woman about a significant, sobering and profound experience of motherhood, which has been one of the greatest teachings of my existence.<
Soy mamá de un niño de 6 años- José Enrique- diagnosticado con autismo no verbal de moderado a severo. Estoy convencida de que diagnóstico no es pronóstico, por lo que trabajamos de manera incansable en sus avances por medio de la trilogía: abordaje terapéutico (4 terapias para ser exactos), acompañamiento pedagógico y trabajo en casa a través de actividades didácticas y de la cotidianidad en sí.
I am the mother of a 6 year old boy - José Enrique - diagnosed with moderate to severe non-verbal autism. I am convinced that diagnosis is not prognosis, so we work tirelessly in his progress through the trilogy: therapeutic approach (4 therapies to be exact), pedagogical accompaniment and work at home through didactic activities and daily life itself. <
Para su tratamiento, la única limitación ha sido económica en algunos momentos. Sin embargo, en casa hemos realizado grandes esfuerzos colocando siempre su intervención terapéutica como prioridad, aunque por algún tiempo corto solo pudimos costear 2 de las 4 terapias requeridas.
For her treatment, the only limitation has been economic at times. However, at home we have made great efforts always placing his therapeutic intervention as a priority, although for a short time we could only afford 2 of the 4 therapies required.<
En junio del 2021 (hace 7 meses) me informaron en el centro de terapias al que asiste José Enrique, que su caso había sido evaluado por el equipo de especialistas que lo atienden y que habían llegado al consenso de que mi niño debía ser inscrito en un colegio especial. En ese momento, aun cuando desde hace un tiempo sentía que mi tesoro requeriría de este tipo de Educación, viví una especie de duelo, puesto que desde el fondo de mi alma conservaba la esperanza de que pudiera avanzar al ritmo de mis expectativas. In June 2021 (7 months ago) I was informed at the therapy center that José Enrique attends, that his case had been evaluated by the team of specialists that attend him and that they had reached the consensus that my child should be enrolled in a special school. At that moment, even though I had felt for some time that my treasure needed this type of education, I lived a kind of mourning, since from the bottom of my soul I kept the hope that he could advance at the pace of my expectations. En el mes de octubre mi José Enrique inició clases en un colegio especial en Caracas-Venezuela, ubicado en Bello Monte. Ya José había estado inscrito en cuatro colegios regulares distintos y en ninguno de ellos la experiencia había sido exitosa, puesto que terminaba siendo excluido dentro del aula de clases porque las maestras simplemente lo dejaban hacer lo que él quisiera, sin ninguna norma o estructura a respetar, tal vez por desconocimiento o por comodidad.
In the month of October my Jose Enrique started classes in a special school in Caracas-Venezuela, located in Bello Monte. José had already been enrolled in four different regular schools and in none of them the experience had been successful, since he ended up being excluded in the classroom because the teachers simply let him do whatever he wanted, without any rules or structure to respect, perhaps out of ignorance or comfort.<
Como toda madre, estaba hecha un mar de nervios aquel primer día, y en general, las primeras semanas. Desde el principio mi niño mostró sentirse cómodo y al poco tiempo sucedió lo que para mí ha sido el regalo más bonito del 2021: José Enrique logró calmarse, sus berrinches han disminuido en un 80%.
Like every mother, I was a nervous wreck that first day, and in general, the first few weeks. From the beginning my child showed to feel comfortable and soon after, what for me has been the most beautiful gift of 2021 happened: José Enrique managed to calm down, his tantrums have decreased by 80%. <
La dinámica del colegio especial es muy diferente. Las maestras le brindan una atención bastante particular a cada estudiante, de hecho, el grupo en el que se encuentra José está integrado por 5 niños, lo que hace que el trabajo sea más cercano. Diariamente las maestras reportan por escrito el trabajo realizado por el niño, cómo se comportó, si comió o no y cualquier otro detalle que observaron.
The dynamics of the special school are very different. The teachers pay particular attention to each student; in fact, the group in which José is in is made up of 5 children, which makes the work closer. Every day the teachers report in writing the work done by the child, how he behaved, whether he ate or not and any other details they observed.<
Aunque José Enrique es no verbal porque aún no estructura frases largas para comunicarse, sus actitudes muestran lo bien que se siente en el ambiente escolar: se levanta contento para ir a la escuela, se sabe el nombre de sus maestras, ha convertido el himno nacional en su canción favorita y pide que lo lleven a la escuela.
Although José Enrique is non-verbal because he does not yet structure long sentences to communicate, his attitudes show how well he feels in the school environment: he gets up happy to go to school, he knows his teachers' names, he has turned the national anthem into his favorite song and he asks to be taken to school.<
En este proceso nos tocaron 2 ángeles como maestras: Erlyn y Mervis, quienes han trabajado con empeño, dedicación, entrega y mucho amor evidenciado no solo en las conductas de mi niño sino en la belleza de las actividades didácticas y manualidades que realizan. Definitivamente su labor es hermosa y tiene un valor incuantificable. Ambas han tenido hijos o familiares con alguna condición lo que les ha permitido ser empáticas con sus estudiantes.
In this process we were touched by 2 angels as teachers: Erlyn and Mervis, who have worked with commitment, dedication, dedication and a lot of love evidenced not only in the behaviors of my child but in the beauty of the didactic activities and crafts they perform. Definitely their work is beautiful and has an unquantifiable value. Both have had children or family members with some condition which has allowed them to be empathetic with their students.<
En líneas generales, el colegio en sí ha demostrado ser una institución de calidad, cuyo personal se esfuerza por brindar a sus estudiantes la mejor atención, formación académica e independencia para la vida, elementos claves en la formación de niños y adolescentes con alguna condición.
In general terms, the school itself has proven to be a quality institution, whose staff strives to provide its students with the best care, academic training and independence for life, key elements in the formation of children and adolescents with any condition.<
El colegio funciona en el mismo lugar donde José realiza sus terapias, por lo que pueden comunicarse con sus terapeutas e informar algunos aspectos relacionados con la conducta, el lenguaje, la socialización, motricidad y avances académicos, por lo que el trabajo se lleva a cabo de una manera integral.
The school operates in the same place where Jose performs his therapies, so they can communicate with their therapists and report some aspects related to behavior, language, socialization, motor skills and academic progress, so the work is carried out in a comprehensive manner.<
En este contexto ¿Fue acertado inscribir a mi hijo con autismo en un colegio especial? La respuesta es sí. Durante estos meses he comprendido que la educación especial era la pieza que faltaba en el rompecabezas para que mi hijo pudiera integrarse y lograr regular su conducta, y más allá de eso, sentirse cómodo, atendido y querido.
In this context, was it wise to enroll my child with autism in a special school? The answer is yes. During these months I have understood that special education was the missing piece in the puzzle so that my son could integrate and manage to regulate his behavior, and beyond that, feel comfortable, cared for and loved.<
Hoy, me emociono cada vez que mi niño va a su escuela (3 veces por semana debido a la pandemia ocasionada por la Covid-19). Disfruto sus expresiones de alegría, sus trabajos y lo apoyo en cada una de sus tareas, que por cierto realiza con entusiasmo y atención. Desde casa seguimos guiando su proceso de aprendizaje con amor y respeto.
Today, I get excited every time my child goes to his school (3 times a week due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19). I enjoy his expressions of joy, his work and I support him in each of his tasks, which he does with enthusiasm and attention. From home we continue to guide his learning process with love and respect.<
Esta es mi experiencia y no significa que todos los niños en el espectro del autismo requieran educación especial. Solo responde a nuestro mundo azul, tan particular y único como el de otras familias. Seguimos caminando de la mano de DIOS y NUNCA nos daremos por vencidos.
This is my experience and it does not mean that all children on the autism spectrum require special education. It only responds to our blue world, as particular and unique as that of other families. We continue to walk hand in hand with GOD and will NEVER give up. <
