My mother turned 66 and before that day she had already told us that she did not want to celebrate it in any way, she did not want to go out, she did not want music, she did not want to party, my brothers and I understand because she had a very close loss recently and we respect her pain. I think that the topic of mourning is something deeply rooted in my mother, not listening to music and not wearing colored clothes for a while is something that is very much hers and my aunts. It's something familiar.
But my daughters and I brought him a cake as a gift, we didn't want to spend the day without giving him something of importance. We found her about to leave for mass and without many pretexts we sang birthdays. My brothers visited her but later and that is why we did not agree, the important thing is to be there, give, accompany, and express our affection with gestures and details. She wasn't expecting it and smiled when she saw us arrive. I'll stick with that, we will have many other birthdays to celebrate however she wants.
