Forest Fungi Finds

If there's one thing that we see a lot of when we are out for hikes or walks, it's fungi!

When the little man and I are out for walks or hikes, we are often on the lookout for things growing on the ground for various fun reasons. I like to be able to explore the natural world with him as he's learning it, a lot of the time I'm learning it too! When it comes to fungi though, I am relatively clueless and absolutely not one to try something! I don't even really like to touch or pick up these things as I have no idea what's poisonous to the touch or gets in our skin and all that. With all of these fungi finds, we took a picture of it and enjoyed it but left it rightfully alone lol.

What's tricky is being able to identify the different kinds of fungi that we find. It's not always possible to do that and it's certainly the case here. Visually I've seen a lot of these mushrooms on multiple different occasions however when it comes to identifying them, I haven't a clue how to differentiate them lol

I've tried looking at various mushroom websites and one of the ones below I've certainly been able to identify however it's these other ones that I see growing a lot that I am unsure about.

When we were on vacation a few weeks ago we ran into a family and the husband was an aspiring forager and was into trying to figure out how to forage for wild mushrooms. He's braver than I am let me tell you! Lol. I love mushrooms as much as the next person but it's one of those things where you need to learn a lot and be confident in what you're looking at before you sample it. Mushrooms are one of the wildest things when it comes to food! Some of it is highly edible and nutritious and others are poisonous and a massive mistake lol. I don't know where these fit in!

These flat red ones are ones I've seen quite a bit over our hikes and they are usually on the ground near pine needles but I don't know if it's vomitting russula or what lol. It certainly looks like it and it appears to be consistent with what it says about where and how these ones grow, but it's hard to know unless you've studied the stuff for a long time.

One of the things that, after reading up about it, that I find reassuring is that I was able to think about the mushroom and where I usually see it. I am appreciative that I try to be observant of small details like where it grows usually and I was thinking back on the times I've seen it and it's usually growing near pine trees. Looking it up, if that is indeed the correct mushroom, they are very common growing at the base of conifers and pine trees which it is obvious that is the case with this one. I am happy that I was able to come to that basic assumption when it comes to this stuff because that's what we need to keep in mind when we are trying to identify these. You have to look around the area and try to put a few things together so that you can be sure on something not just on what it looks like but it's habitat and surrounding things. If multiple boxes check off then it's a good chance that you could be correct!

With mushrooms though, I am most certainly not going to test that out hahaha. The one above is one that we would certainly steer clear of, given the name, but people apparently used to eat it! I'm all set with that let me tell you lol.

One of the ones that seems pretty safe to eat is this big fella! These ones are pretty easy to identify but this one looks like it's the "chicken of the woods" because of the wide expanse of it and the colors of it. Again, I have no idea but that is one that I've heard of before and it's pretty distinct in it's appearance. There are others that it may be as well but the chicken of the woods mushrooms are popular because of the ability to eat them. I don't know if I would necessarily eat them right now but I would be open to trying it if a mushroom master picked some and cooked it up!

With each of the trips out into the woods for hikes, especially in the fall, we are constantly on the lookout for and finding fun things like this! These are small pieces of an overall home educational experience for both the little man as well as myself that I am definitely enjoying. I don't mind looking at something from afar to appreciate it, I'm not hell-bent on trying something if I don't have to lol.
