UK Puffball Lycoperdon nigrescens ? Mushroom Fungi

in Fungi Loverslast year (edited)

Hi Hello

I came across this puffball this morning. It is growing in sandy soil right above a rabbit hole. I wasn't sure what it was to start with, I only noticed it due to the dogs tacking an interest in the area. Apparently they are pretty common in the UK but I've have ever seen one before.

Having looked online I think it looks most like a Lycoperdon nigrescens - A Dusky Puffball. I am happy to be corrected if you know your fungi.

Apparently all UK puffballs are edible if picked early enough. I don't think from what ive read that this is still edible as the hole has opened in the middle to let out it's spores. There are several mushroom in the Uk that look like Puff balls but arent and are dangerous to eat.

I found a good page which hopefully helped me identify this fungi correctly.

On my 1st look I though it was a nest made by paper wasps (and someone else's hole). Nice find!

It might not be what i think it is. Here is a photo (not mine) of one with a hole at this link but its slightly different colours.

Now I know where it was I will go back next year and check for others. It's quite late for mushrooms/fungi where I am

For me, looks like a Puffball - the texture of its skin, the shape... all very similar.
