I took a trip out to the countryside looking for morels but found none as the weather in this area still seems to be in early spring mode.I have still had no luck finding morels for this #mushroomonday

The only thing I found was this tree stump that someone chainsaw carved into what looks like a mix between a shaggy mane and a bolete.

All I found were the usual polypores a mix between false turkeytail and true turkeytail.

This old log was super infested with turkeytail.

It seems like every square inch has been covered in this medicinal fungi.

The color of turkeytail in this area seems to be more gray and green compared to the usual brown and blues I see around the area where I live. The Latin name Trametes versicolor implies that it varies in color and I've seen quite a few colors of this across the country.

p5075841_copy.jpg
The only other fungi I found was some Pannaria lurida very common all over the place year-round.

I talked to some of the locals and they said morel season only starts a couple weeks after it hasn't been raining and gets around 60 degrees in temperature. Sometimes too much rain will keep the mushrooms from growing which is what we've been getting this year.

I would rather blame this squirrel for stealing all the mushrooms in the area lol. Who knows if they even eat mushrooms...

Ah well at least the spring flowers are starting out over here. Maybe in the meantime I'll learn some of these early bloomers to see if they have any medicinal properties to them so I won't come back empty handed from early spring foraging.

Hopefully this year won't be a dud in finding spring morels... Otherwise I'll have to cheat by going to the farmer's market to buy some them plant them in the soil to make it look like I found them in the wild lol.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Sort:

Hiring photo models at the local farmers market 🙂 for shame for shame for shame Well the squirrels, flowers and turkeytail are always there for you. I like the small blue flowers. btw when I'm foraging as long as I bring back pictures I never consider myself to be empty handed.

On that walk I did manage to find a bunch of pelicans. Go looking for mushrooms and end up with pelicans lol. At least it will be a good #featheredfriday post

Hahaha plant them yourself lol 🍄
You did find a carved out of a tree trunk and some turkeytails. 😎
I have been mushroom hunting for the last months, but no… nothing.
Yesterday I did found some tiny turkeytail ones though but not enough to write a post about hahaha

It’s beautiful to see the squirrel and the spring flowers @sketch.and.jam 😁

In the absence of mushrooms I will have to start figuring out the names of all these flowers. Maybe some have medicinal qualities.

Yes… would be cool the know though 😉🌱🌱

But, on the other hand, you had those quirky squirrels, and all those amazing waking up nature scenes. which isnt a bad thing too, right?

Fortunately the critters were out and about, I'm hoping the season is just a bit later this year for morels... Or even some false morels would be fine lol.

very beautiful pictures of mushrooms they grow very fertile. whether the weather is raining there, in the past few days my area is always raining.

The main problem here is it was too cold for the mushrooms to grow yet.

Thanks :-)

There's no Morels here either and we don't have squirrels. We'll blame them anyway...

Those little guys got to them before me lol. I think it was just a bad year of too much rain then sudden heat that kept the morels from growing.

Our local Morels only really grow after a fire.
