It has been slim pickings around here this early in spring for any good mushrooms. I did spot this little tree creeper hanging out under a huge polypore. Here are some early spring finds for this #mushroommonday
These little tree creepers inch their way up the trees looking for ants and other bugs in the tree bark. Hopefully it can find something this early in spring.
This is about the time morels are appearing and these empty walnuts always fake me out when I see them. Their pattern reminds me of the brainy patter of a morel but alas it is just another empty walnut.
The moss is starting to show up, but still not too many mushrooms.
Here is a toothed crust polypore on a dead tree. Not really useful for much.
I did find a fairly large elf cup that was a bit mangled. These usually bloom right before the morels come out.
Here are some standard split gills that are a nice edible. This was the only edible mushroom I found.
Here are some strange looking polypores. My guess is they are tiny little artist's conks.
The only new thing that has been growing in abundance are the LBMs.
These are the LBMs (little brown mushrooms) that were all over the place on the ground.
I suspect they might be in the mycena family but identifying these types of little brown mushrooms is difficult as there are so many different species that look just like these. Odds are they are not edible.
Hopefully by end of April the morels will finally be out. That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
Hey do you mind if I hop on the #mushroommonday train too?
Yeah feel free, hopefully morel season will be good over there.
I'm starting small, lol - I have friends who know where they are (but refuse to take me with them)
Haha people get possessive of their morel plots. All those trails along the edge of the Mississippi are great spots to look for them. Basically any dead tree you see with bark falling off it is a good place to look, they tend to grow out of dead alder roots or other dead tree roots.
Happy #mushroommonday but I gotta say I like the tree creeper camo shot and walnut (post squirrel) best. The last LBM shot is good too. Here's to better luck and some morels next outing 🤞
I have to finish processing the rest of the tree creeper photos to see if any turned out clear for feathered friends. They've been on my bucket list for getting a clear picture, very shy and fast moving little bird. Those darn walnuts always get my hopes up thinking its the cap of a morel.
very unique mushroom
Hopefully the morels will be out soon...
Mushrooms are so beautiful and unique
