THAT ONE THING THAT KEEPS ME SANE

in Self Improvement2 years ago
Some days ago, a friend called me at around 11 pm, it was really shocking to me because it's unlike him, he doesn't usually call late so I just took the call thinking that it might be an emergency.

Actually, I avoid taking calls late at night, especially from an unknown number because of my kind of person. Though I will always tell people to text if it's too urgent. At least, with messages, I can take a while to process them. I value my peace as an over thinker. I and my friend spoke at length, he was actually losing it.
Keeping sane during this period isn't easy.

Social media is now a never-ending show of affluence, wealth, show-offs, and all.

So much content to consume and for most people, it's a constant reminder of what they do not “currently” have or own.

This was the situation of my friend. After the long talk, I had with him, I was prompted to make this post.

A part of the Bible said in all thy getting, acquire “wisdom”, but I will advise, in addition to wisdom, get CONTENTMENT

You literally allow someone's curated feed or timeline to oppress you. Contents they have carefully curated, edited, and created to be perfect.
There's nothing wrong with wanting good things, you just can't allow the absence of some of these things to affect you so badly.

Life comes in stages.

A lot of people are yet to understand that we all have different timelines, there is no shortage of good things in this life, and everyone has time.

Contentment is a virtue that respects the reality of the present. A lot of people see life as a never-ending race for the best. Life is indeed a race but who said it's always for the best?. You get a fancy car today and tomorrow, you are on the run to acquire a mansion. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't cancel desire, it cancels desperation.

There is a thin line between ambition and greed.

Yesterday you wanted a car, and you got it. You desired to lodge in the most expensive hotel and you did it, you wanted a mansion and you got it. You even traveled for holidays to your favorite city in the world. Are you satisfied yet? What is missing?

Contentment is appreciating where you are now, what you have now, and hoping for the best in the future. It differentiates between needs and wants.

Contentment breeds gratitude.

In all thy getting, Get contentment, it yields true happiness.

Right on ... as the Scripture says, "Godliness with contentment is great gain."

It is a tragedy how popular social media makes people engage in needless comparison ... but it is also why I spend the bulk of my social media time creating on Hive and watching things I can learn from on YouTube. We can choose not to oppress ourselves ... but it is hard sometimes to help our friends out.

Actually, these days people are very intentional about oppressing their fellow humans. Well, it's still up to us to choose what and what not to believe. It's in our hands at the end of the day. I'm very steady on social media but I choose what to take home and what to leave back for them. For my peace. Sometimes, I go as far as blocking some people and deleting some numbers. All for my sanity.Thank you for stopping by @deeanndmathews

I literally just wrote down your first line before reading through your comment to see that our first line of thoughts was absolutely same. And like you have rightly pointed out, there's a place for 'choice'. We can decide the things that influences us but then we have no control over what other people allow to influence them. Hence we can only advise. Social media can be a huge blessing or something alarmingly negative and oppressive but then we make the choices. Thank you @deeanndmathews for your comment that triggered my thoughts and thank you @silviafx for putting up the piece, creating an opportunity to communicate on something really essential.

Godliness with contentment is great gain. That is what the scriptures say. You have beautifully depicted that in your piece and contentment is definitely an absolute therapy for sanity.. But then where is the line between contentment and complacency?
