Nestled in the heart of southern Italy lies Matera, a city that seems to defy the passage of time. Renowned for its ancient cave dwellings, the Sassi di Matera, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers a glimpse into a bygone era, where history and culture intertwine in a tapestry of stone.
The first thing that struck me was the stunning view of the Sassi districts, Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano. Walking through these ancient neighborhoods, I was amazed by the intricate network of caves, houses, and churches carved into the rock. It felt like wandering through a giant, open-air museum.
