Colossal movies provide a lot of knowledge for the audience, ranging from history, culture, even to intrigue. Interestingly, the colossal film has always been one of the most awaited films, and until now Mandarin Cinema still controls the genre of this movie.
The Curse of The Golden Flower worked on by Zhang Yimou is one of the best I've ever watched. This film tells the story of intrigue in the royal family between the emperor (Chow Yun Fat), the empress (Gong Li), and his three children namely Prince Wan (Liu Ye), Prince Jai (Jay Chou) and Prince Yu (Qin Junjie).
Emperors and empresses do not get along. On one hand, the emperor tried to poison the empress through poison infiltrated in drugs that the empress routinely took. On the other hand, the empress tried to coup the emperor through her second child, Prince Jai.
This intrigue extends beyond this family territory after that, there is an affair between prince Wan and the son of the royal doctor Jiang Chan (Li Man). This problem is increasingly complex after it was discovered that there was a romantic relationship between Jiang Chan's mother and the emperor in his past.
Although it is dominated by dialogue and not many typical martial arts scenes appear in Mandarin films, but we could be made to sit enduring from beginning to end. This is inseparable from the acting power of Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li.
The colors stretched out by the movie also make the eyes spoiled (this happened from the opening of the film when hundreds of royal ladies gave birth to clothes). The colossal scene in the form of a big war between the emperor's army versus the empress's army towards the end of the film too - though not as dramatic but still - gives its own impression.
To note that the strength of the Curse of the Golden Flower is of course the fact that behind the image of a kingdom that is calm and without conflict, there is the intrigue that is so boiling and ready to bomb at the right time. And I found it in a lot of colossal movies.
Curse of the Golden Flower has a few weaknesses that could be crucial: The cultivation of music. The music arranged by Shigeru Umebayashi is unable to sustain various dramatic and enchanting scenes.
The rest, this 114-minute movie has a storyline that is not very boring, this film has almost all the requirements to become a top movie: The appearance of the prima actors, the storyline that is difficult to guess until the end, sophisticated battle effects, special costumes, until charming palace and mountain backdrop. Here are the trailers that you can watch.
