Custom Made Blu-Ray Cover for Another Cover I Hated, Near Dark

NearDark (2).jpeg

Last week I posted my Buffy The Vampire Slayer custom slipcover. I figured I would jump right in with another Vampire classic that suffered from Twilightization. To be fair, Near Dark had some fairly strong romance elements but the blu-ray cover is obviously trying to cash in on Twilights success. Let's take a look at the studio's Photoshop job shall we?

Hmmmm, that looks familiar

I mean, that's pretty bad. Near Dark may have some cheesy over the top romance elements but Twilight it isn't. Needless to say, I was ready to cover that up. For the first side I couldn't find a high res Image of the original movie poster but I found a very similar production photo of Bill Paxton and slapped on the Near Dark logo. I like it but if I find the original poster art in high res format I may make a new one.

For the other side I chose an incredible piece of fan art by the wonderfully talented Mark Drummond.

I decided to stick with Mark Drummond's incredible artwork for the spine. I think it turned out rather nicely overall. Feel free to let me know what you think about the movie or my slipcover below. I'm always happy to get feedback and engage in conversation. Thanks for stopping by!

Wow that's a real travesty. The photoshop heads on the cover was a trend supposedly created by Walmart and their requests to do so. Nobody knows what the movie is unless the actor's faces are all over it they say.

The crispy looking Bill Paxton is what everyone remembers as a still from this one. Good luck having that on the store shelf. I do like that fan art version and reminds me of The Gunslinger from the Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

I'd love to see the look on the face of the twilight fan that bought this. I doubt they'd make it 10 minutes into the film and check out at the bar scene.

You could create a string of postings called crappy physical media art. I do remember someone running a website detailing all the Chinese bootleg movies at one point. They had some crazy artwork that was copy/pasted from different sources and usually had nothing to do with the movie they were trying to sell on the street.

Makes sense that Walmart is behind the awful covers. That's a cool bit of info I never knew. The real travesty is that studio's have already paid good money for some incredible artwork with a lot of these theatrical posters. VHS nailed it by using the theatrical posters but once we got to DVD's and the emergence of digital editing everything went south quick. I do feel bad for all the Twilight lover's that got duped into buying this but who knows, maybe we ended up making a few converts.

I'm trying to use original posters for my slipcovers but this fan art was an exception. I totally agree it gives off Gunslinger vibes from The Dark Tower series and I've always been a huge fan of comic art.

I love your idea of crappy physical media art! The only real downside is that I have to buy these rotting turds to feature them haha. My wife and I are usually hitting up flea markets and garage sales so we come across a lot of those awful bootlegs you mentioned. Might be worth the laugh to start picking up some of the worst offenders.
