EMANCIPATION STARRING WILL SMITH

By now, it should be old news that renowned Hollywood actor Will Smith slapped American comedian Chris Rock on stage during the Academy movie awards. This incident sprang up due to a joke Chris Rock cracked about Jada Pinkett, Will's wife and mother to his children. As funny as it may sound, some people were of different opinions, some said it was a well-deserved slap, cause how can you talk dirty about a man's wife and expect to walk freely, others believed Will Smith overreacted and as a comedian, he should also know how these things work.

For me, I think yelling was probably enough, and walking up to the stage to land the man a heavy slap was probably uncalled for, but if we should also look at it from a different lens, he's just a husband that's madly in love.

As we all know

we can do crazy things for love.

This incident didn't end there only, the aftermath of Will Smith's action caught up with him when he received a ten-year ban from the Academy Movie Awards after being crowned the Best actor for his role in King Richard. Afterward, Will made a video on his youtube channel, apologizing to the comedian he slapped and the Hollywood movie academy as well.

Apple TV's Dilemma with Will Smith

Prior to the slap event, Apple TV was already running a movie project called Emancipation, which stars Will Smith as the lead character.

According to Wikipedia,

Emancipation is an upcoming action thriller film directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by William N. Collage. The film stars Will Smith and Ben Foster.
Emancipation is scheduled to be released in 2023, by Apple TV+.

The movie is set in the era of the Civil War and it talks about the escape of a slave known as Peter from the hands of his masters on the Louisiana plantation and how he makes his way to the north. Due to the movie's heavy budget of 120 million dollars, it is set to premiere in 2023.
The movie which is based on the true life story of Gordon, the slave with huge scars on his back due to whips from his masters, is a kind of movie Apple TV likes to pick up as a project.

This is because of the movie's relation to true events, another typical example of such a movie is The Banker, which I also watched and did a review on, check it out HERE.

The real dilemma for Apple TV which has come to the limelight is the problem of will the movie get positive recognition from the people at the Hollywood movie Academy now that the movie's lead actor is on a ban. This problem has been a huge blockbuster on Twitter, with people talking about it and what might really happen. Some people are of the opinion that it might not be a huge deal and others are saying otherwise. This problem is something I suspect might be giving the promotion or marketing team at Apple TV a little problem since 120 million dollars has been spent on the project already. I am yet to confirm if the movie will still premiere in 2023 but I feel it should.

A standing controversy for me still remains that if an actor like Ezra Miller, for those who don't know him, he is the actor that played the role of Flash in Zack Snyder's Justice League, is still getting big movie roles despite the various allegations against him,

Then why is Will Smith's role in EMANCIPATION that of a big deal?

Sort:

No matter how educated a person is, he can't stop being human, he was going to be criticised from all sides, if he reacted as he did or if he stopped doing it, he was also criticised, so it's better to get that emotion out and assume the consequences.

For me the academy exaggerated in the sanction and who knows maybe it will be the most watched film of his in history, we will have to wait.

Good post, very enjoyable analysis. @blackavalon

Thank you.

Someone that gets my point.
No matter what we do in this world we will always be criticized for it and the worst is when we do nothing we will still be criticized. And yeah I feel emancipation might just be the most watched Will Smith movie.

In my opinion, what he did was wrong, However, I don't think he should be stripped off roles in movies. If he was charged, which am not so sure Chris did, Then it is d law he would face.

I totally concur with your opinion and if you take a look at it 10 years is quite long.
