Happy Halloween in advance everyone... it's truly a joyful season whenever the spook fest is around the corner. And although I haven't been a kid for so long, it still makes me happy cause I get to see parents and their children hop around in different costumes, some deadly hilarious and others absolutely horrendous.
Today I would like to discuss about a movie, once told with horror that it sent chills down my spine. A movie filled with a great cast and an almost perfect performance. One built on a tale of witches and their ever-growing hunger for children.
The name of this movie is, The Witches.
The movie, the witches first made its way to the big screen in the year 1990 and featured a lot of legendary names like Angelica Huston, Rowen Atkinson, and many others.
The movie tells the story of a young boy Luke, who encounters a group of witches after the sudden death of his parents. He eventually falls prey to these witches and is turned into a mouse.
Now as a mouse, he tries to stop the witches from carrying out such horrendous acts on other children.
After watching this movie, I now have a couple of things to say. First of all, I have to commend the producers and directors of this 1990 movie for being outstanding in visuals, background, animations, and costume and makeup.
The visuals of this movie though old, came out very easy to the eyes, the background, the light, and even the camera angle all spoke in splendid detail. Once the movie began to play, I just felt at ease with my environment and the movie itself, allowing the camera to take me on a journey of horror, magic, and adventure. Beginning with the protagonist Luke, who paid attention to the horrifying stories about witches that his grandmother narrated to him.
And I felt chills run down my spine throughout the whole narration.
After the whole narration, Luke and his mother relocate to a hotel near a beach due to some circumstances, and that's where he encounters Mr. Stringer (Rowan Atkinson) who in a sense is the hotel's manager. And who also has secret a affair with one of the workers in the weirdest way possible.
So after, Luke encounters the group of witches as they assemble for a meeting in a large but closed room. Here he hears their plan to secretly turn all children into rats. And witness it firsthand when one of the kids he met earlier, Bruno(Charlie Potter)gets transformed into a little mouse right Infront of him. The witches soon discover Luke and then engage him in a truly hilarious and impractical chase before he is then caught and turned into a rat.
Now, what I truly liked about this part of the movie is the makeup and the CGI. I don't know what makeup was like then, in 1990, or what a regular CGI movie, is supposed to look like as I have seen a lot of bad CGI films that are in my best word of description, Bad! But then effort was put in by the makeup crew and the CGI experts to create a horrifying grand witch(Angelica Huston), and a perfect CGI Mouse. Even though the grand witch's makeup did have its flaws like the wobbly finger which indicates fakeness, and also the implausible fact that when she takes off her face mask to reveal her true hideous nature, the rest of her human skin vanishes! (no true explanation was given for this)

I honestly hate the chase scene because it didn't make an effort to be believable. I mean, there is just one human child locked in a room filled with powerful witches and yet he somehow manages to escape!! ... It's just not fact!
The rest of the movie from here onwards soon began to feel like one of those ridiculous ancient movies that should never have been made. It quickly lost its sense of horror and diverted straight into comedy which In my opinion didn't do well for the movie.
In all, the movie turned out to be okay, one suitable for people with little to no tolerance for horror.
But alas, in 2020, a move was made to correct these errors, with a cast of Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Gucci, Kristen Chenoweth, Chris Pratt, and many more.
But sadly, Octavia Spencer who played Luke's Grandma was the only positive thing about this movie. As she delivered with the highest performance, driven with an emotional tone.
Although the 2020 reboot did manage to cancel out all the impractical scenes from the 1990s movie. It still was unable to fear or frighten, except for some few moments of cringe.
The thing here is that whenever this 2020 reboots try to get serious and scare the living hell out of its audience..it quickly becomes laughable. Especially with the weird cringe-looking demonic smile/ mouth. I don't know if it's due to the presence of comedian Chris Pratt, all I know is that it kept swimming in an ocean of puns and comedy.
They also leveraged most of the reboot on the fact that technology is advanced, and ended up with what I would describe as, an undercooked film, as nothing new was added.
Finally, I believe that the movie, Witches, both old and new is truly remarkable depending on what you want. Let's say you want something a little bit horrifying with a little less comedy, then I suggest you stick with the old version as it readily tries to captivate its audience with horror(ish). But If you just feel like watching something calmer, well elaborate, modern, and with a lot of unnecessary comedy then I suggest you watch the 2020 version. Either way, I'm sure your Halloween will be filled with, Joy, love, excitement, witches, and a little bit of horror.

Hoy me gustaría hablar de una película, una vez contada con horror que me produjo escalofríos. Una película con un gran reparto y una actuación casi perfecta. Una construida sobre una historia de brujas y su creciente hambre de niños.
El nombre de esta película es, Las brujas.
La película Las brujas llegó por primera vez a la gran pantalla en el año 1990 y contó con un montón de nombres legendarios como Angelica Huston, Rowen Atkinson, y muchos otros.
La película cuenta la historia de un joven, Luke, que se encuentra con un grupo de brujas tras la repentina muerte de sus padres. Al final cae presa de estas brujas y se convierte en un ratón.
Ahora, como ratón, intenta impedir que las brujas realicen actos tan horrendos con otros niños.
Después de ver esta película, tengo un par de cosas que decir. En primer lugar, tengo que elogiar a los productores y directores de esta película de 1990 por ser extraordinarios en cuanto a los efectos visuales, el fondo, las animaciones y el vestuario y el maquillaje.
Los efectos visuales de esta película, aunque son antiguos, entran muy bien por los ojos, el fondo, la luz e incluso el ángulo de la cámara hablan con espléndido detalle. Una vez que la película empezó a sonar, me sentí a gusto con el entorno y con la propia película, dejando que la cámara me llevara a un viaje de horror, magia y aventura. Empezando por el protagonista, Luke, que prestaba atención a las espeluznantes historias sobre brujas que le narraba su abuela.
Y sentí escalofríos que recorrieron mi columna vertebral durante toda la narración.
Después de toda la narración, Luke y su madre se trasladan a un hotel cerca de una playa por algunas circunstancias, y es ahí donde se encuentra con el señor Stringer (Rowan Atkinson) que en cierto modo es el gerente del hotel. Y que además tiene un romance secreto con una de las trabajadoras de la forma más extraña posible.

Y es testigo de primera mano cuando uno de los niños que conoció antes, Bruno (Charlie Potter) se transforma en un ratoncito delante de él. Las brujas no tardan en descubrir a Luke y se enzarzan con él en una persecución realmente hilarante y poco práctica antes de que lo atrapen y lo conviertan en rata.
Ahora, lo que realmente me gustó de esta parte de la película es el maquillaje y el CGI. No sé cómo era el maquillaje entonces, en 1990, o cómo se supone que debe ser una película de CGI normal, ya que he visto muchas películas de CGI malas que son, en mi mejor palabra, malas. Pero el equipo de maquillaje y los expertos en CGI se esforzaron por crear una gran bruja horrible (Angelica Huston) y un ratón CGI perfecto. Aunque el maquillaje de la gran bruja tenía sus defectos, como el dedo que se tambalea, que indica falsedad, y también el hecho inverosímil de que cuando se quita la máscara para revelar su verdadera naturaleza horrible, ¡el resto de su piel humana desaparece! Sinceramente, odio la escena de la persecución porque no se esforzó en ser creíble. Es decir, sólo hay un niño humano encerrado en una habitación llena de brujas poderosas y sin embargo, ¡¡¡se las arregla para escapar!!! ... ¡Simplemente no es un hecho!
El resto de la película a partir de aquí pronto comenzó a sentirse como una de esas ridículas películas antiguas que nunca deberían haberse hecho. Rápidamente perdió el sentido del terror y se desvió directamente hacia la comedia, lo que en mi opinión no hizo bien a la película.
Con todo, la película resultó estar bien, una apta para personas con poca o ninguna tolerancia al terror.
Pero, por desgracia, en 2020, se hizo un movimiento para corregir estos errores, con un elenco de Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Gucci, Kristen Chenoweth, Chris Pratt, y muchos más.
Pero lamentablemente, Octavia Spencer, que interpretó a la abuela de Luke, fue lo único positivo de esta película. Ya que se entregó con la más alta actuación, impulsada con un tono emocional.
Aunque el reboot de 2020 consiguió anular todas las escenas poco prácticas de la película de los 90. Aun así fue incapaz de asustar o atemorizar, a excepción de algunos momentos de crujido.

También aprovecharon la mayor parte del reboot en el hecho de que la tecnología es avanzada, y terminó con lo que yo describiría como, una película poco cocida, ya que no se agregó nada nuevo.
Por último, creo que la película, Brujas, tanto la antigua como la nueva es realmente notable dependiendo de lo que quieras. Digamos que quieres algo un poco horripilante con un poco menos de comedia, entonces te sugiero que te quedes con la versión antigua, ya que fácilmente trata de cautivar a su público con el horror(ish). Pero si te apetece ver algo más tranquilo, bien elaborado, moderno y con mucha comedia innecesaria, entonces te sugiero que veas la versión de 2020. De cualquier manera, estoy seguro de que tu Halloween estará lleno de, alegría, amor, emoción, brujas y un poco de horror.

La antigua versión fue excelente y etsa versión no me gusto paga nada, de hecho la actuación de Anne Hathaway es una de las peores fecha por los críticos.
La versión original fue sin duda mejor

Hey! De esta película me quedo con su versión original, pues como tú lo mencionas, los efectos especiales fueron muy bien ejecutados para la época, y me dió mucho más miedo que la actual. La versión reciente no es que sea del todo mala, pero perdió mucho de la escencia de la original y no es nada terrorífica...
