¿Cuál fue la mejor película?
Now, after having seen the five films of the iconic agent created by Ian Fleming personified by actor Daniel Craig, I give myself the task of sharing my personal ranking. I don't pretend to say which is the best or the worst, it is a matter of personal taste. According to certain elements that I usually enjoy watching a movie and depending on whether or not they have been present in this saga, I will arrange them in regressive order.
Ahora sí, después de haber visto las cinco películas del icónico agente creado por Ian Fleming personificado por el actor Daniel Craig, me doy a la tarea de compartir mi ranking personal. No pretendo asegurar cuál es la mejor o la peor, se trata de una cuestión de gusto personal. De acuerdo a ciertos elementos que suelo disfrutar al ver una película y según hayan estado, o no, presentes en esta saga, las ordenaré en orden regresivo.
5. Quantum of Solace (2008)
In addition to being the shortest of the five films starring Daniel Craig (under two hours in length), it was the one I enjoyed the least for essentially one reason: James Bond didn't seem James Bond. The trigger for the story was a personal revenge, which is not the style of agent 007 and there was an excess of violent sequences. This Bond is tougher than others, yes, but all in all he doesn't lose his elegance the way I feel he lost it in Quantum of Solace. The plot has an environmental approach that I liked, but the villain did not impress me (although I deeply respect Mathieu Amalric) and the character of Camille did not strike me as a full-fledged Bond girl (although the beauty and exoticism of Olga Kurylenko cannot be questioned); This, added to a script that seemed weak to me, made me feel like I was watching any action movie and not one that was part of this emblematic saga.
Además de ser la más corta de las cinco películas potagonizadas por Daniel Craig (por debajo de las dos horas de duración) fue la que menos disfruté esencialmente por una razón: James Bond no parecía James Bond. El detonante de la historia era una venganza personal, lo que no es el estilo del agente 007 y hubo un exceso de secuencias violentas. Este Bond es más rudo que otros, sí, pero dentro de todo no pierde su elegancia de la forma en que siento que la perdió en Quantum of Solace. La trama tiene un enfoque ambiental que me gustó, pero el villano no me impresionó (aunque respeto profundamente a Mathieu Amalric) y el personaje de Camille no me pareció una chica Bond en toda regla (aunque la belleza y el exotismo de Olga Kurylenko no pueden ser puestos en duda); ello sumado a un guión que me pareció flojo me hicieron sentir que veía una película de acción cualquiera y no una que fuese parte de esta emblemática saga.
4. Spectre (2015)
As in rank 5, in Spectre I felt that the character of the villain, the antagonist, was below the quality of the actor who played him. Christoph Waltz is a top-notch actor and he's always convincing, but I didn't find the character interesting enough to be the head of an organization as huge as Specter with connections and reach to every previous movie in the series. I liked the character of Dr. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) because she is one of the Bond girls who really gains prominence in the plot due to her character without being limited to being damsels in distress seduced by agent 007 (of course this happens, but there is more). Then there is also the presence of Q and Moneypenny, Bond's return to the ways of love, the reconstruction of MI6 now in charge of Mallory (Ralph Fiennes) and some plot points that tried to follow the path back to the essence of the character just as they had in Skyfall. Without being too bright or disappointing, I put Spectre at number 4 because I enjoyed it a little more - and just a little - than QoS.
Al igual que en el puesto 5, en Spectre me pareció que el personaje del villano, el antagonista, estaba por debajo de la calidad del actor que lo interpretaba. Christoph Waltz es un actor de primera y siempre resulta convincente, pero el personaje no me pareció tan interesante como para ser la cabeza de una organización tan inmensa como Spectre con conexiones y alcances a todas las películas previas de la saga. Me gustó el carácter de la Dra. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) porque es una de las chicas Bond que realmente gana protagonismo en la trama por su carácter sin limitarse a ser damiselas en peligro seducidas por el agente 007 (clao que esto pasa, pero hay más). Luego está también la presencia de Q y Moneypenny, el regreso de Bond a los caminos del amor, la reconstrucción del MI6 ahora a cargo de Mallory (Ralph Fiennes) y algunos puntos en la trama que trataron de seguir el camino de regreso a la esencia del personaje tal como lo habían hecho en Skyfall. Sin brillar mucho ni ser decepcionante, coloco Spectre en el puesto número 4 porque la disfruté un poco más - y sólo un poco - que QoS.
3. No time to die (2021)
The 25th film in the saga was the 5th and last with Daniel Craig as the lead. Released last year, I think it was a fair closure for the character and for the actor. It is the longest in this ranking (almost three hours long) and the plot has interesting elements: Bond's return after retiring at the end of Spectre, a new 007 agent appointed in his absence, the advanced technology of the weapon that falls into the hands of the villain, the evolution of the relationship between Bond and Madeleine and, of course, the final sacrifice of James who gives his life to save his loves, his country and the world. There are good action sequences, a better script than others in the franchise (although again the character of the villain seemed weak to me), good photography, beautiful locations and it looks like a Bond movie. However, a not minor detail that you can corroborate is that of the five films, this was the only one whose promotional poster included the main characters (and not just Bond or Bond with his girl) which I do not consider entirely correct because if there is a movie in which Bond deserved to appear larger on the poster and perhaps alone was precisely in No time to die. But it's only an opinion.
La 25a película de la saga fue la 5a y última con Daniel Craig como protagonista. Estrenada el año pasado, creo que fue un cierre justo para el personaje y para el actor. Es la más larga de este ranking (casi tres horas de duración) y la trama tiene elementos interesantes: el regreso de Bond después de haberse retirado al final de Spectre, una nueva agente 007 designada en su ausencia, la avanzada tecnología del arma que cae en manos del villano, la evolución de la relación entre Bond y Madeleine y, por supuesto, el sacrificio final de James quien entrega su vida para salvar a sus amores, a su país y al mundo. Hay buenas secuencias de acción, un guión mejor elaborado que otros de la franquicia (aunque nuevamente el personaje del villano me pareció flojo), buena fotografía, hermosas locaciones y parece una película de Bond. Sin embargo, un detalle no menor y que pueden corroborar es que de los cinco films, este fue el único cuyo poster promocional incluyó a los personajes principales (y no sólo a Bond o a Bond con su chica) lo que no considero del todo correcto porque si hay una película en la que Bond merecía aparecer en mayor tamaño en el poster y quizás solo era precisamente en No time to die. Pero es solamente una opinión.
2. Skyfall (2012)
It was Craig's third film as Bond. The franchise needed to recover from the disappointment of QoS and they did so by going back to their roots, literally. In Skyfall the essence of Bond is taken up again and several events take place that mark a before and after in the saga. In addition, it is the most personal film for James Bond, we see something (not much) of his childhood, how he came to MI6 and how he began his relationship at the service of M (Judy Dench). The death of his former mentor and director adds emotional weight to the plot, as does the fact that the final battle takes place on the land where Bond grew up as an orphan. But besides that, there are two elements that, in my opinion, make this movie better than the previous ones (and even better than the number 1, at least in one of these two points): it has the best original song of this top (despite the fact that three of them have won the Oscar) and I think the scariest villain. Javier Bardem plays a great role as Silva, both his performance and the character are more frightening than Dominic, the villain of QoS and less cold than Le Chiffre (Casino Royale) whose interest was purely economic while for Silva it is a personal and idealistic struggle. This confrontation between Bond and a former Bond also adds to the plot. In summary, I think that the villain is what makes this movie what it is, which works well in this case and not like in the previous three places in this ranking.
Fue la tercera película de Craig como Bond. La franquicia necesitaba recuperarse de la decepción de QoS y lo hicieron volviendo a sus raíces, literalmente. En Skyfall se retoma la esencia de Bond y suceden varios acontecimientos que marcan un antes y un después en la saga. Además, se trata de la película más personal para James Bond, vemos algo (no mucho) de su infancia, de cómo llegó al MI6 y de cómo inició su relación al servicios de M (Judy Dench). La muerte de quien había sido su mentora y directora le agrega carga emocional a la trama, así como el hecho de que la batalla final se libre en los terrenos en los que Bond creció como un niño huérfano. Pero además de eso, hay dos elementos que, a mi parecer, hacen que esta película sea mejor que las anteriores (e incluso mejor que la de puesto número 1, al menos en uno de estos dos puntos): tiene la mejor canción original de este top (a pesar de que tres de ellas han ganado el Oscar) y creo que el villano más temible. Javier Bardem hace un gran papel como Silva, tanto su actuación como el personaje resultan más atemorizantes que Dominic, el villano de QoS y menos frío que Le Chiffre (Casino Royale) cuyo interés era netamente económico mientras que para Silva se trata de una lucha personal e idealista. Esta confrontación ente Bond y un ex Bond también suma a la trama. En resumen, creo que el villano es el que hace que esta película sea lo que es, lo que en este caso funciona bien y no como en los tres puestos previos de este ranking.
1. Casino Royale (2006)
They say sequels have never been better. I have examples against that sentence, but in the case of Daniel Craig's Bond I agree with it because the second, third, fourth and fifth parts, none of them, exceeded, in my opinion, what was achieved in Casino Royale. The fast and elegant cars, the technological inventions used by 007, the exotic girls and a classy, elegant, arrogant and seductive agent, all of these were always part of the character and are elements that are honored in this return to the big screen. However, unlike his predecessors, especially the more recent ones, Daniel Craig's character is more of a badass. Yes, we saw the other Bonds fight, bleed, hit and get hit, but this new Bond is more violent and reckless when it comes to dealing with villains and is also punished in a more crude way (especially in this movie) .
Dicen que segundas partes nunca fueron mejores. Tengo ejemplos en contra de esa sentencia, pero en el caso del Bond de Daniel Craig coincido con ella porque la segunda, tercera, cuarta y quinta parte, ninguna de ellas, superó, a mi parecer, lo logrado en Casino Royale. Los autos rápidos y elegantes, los inventos tecnológicos empleados por 007, las chicas exóticas y un agente con clase, elegante, arrogante y seductor, todo ello fue siempre parte del personaje y son elementos a los que se rindió honor en este regreso a la gran pantalla. Sin embargo, a diferencia de sus predecesores, especialmente los más recientes, el personaje de Daniel Craig es más rudo. Sí, a los otros Bond los vimos pelear, sangrar, golpear y ser golpeados, pero este nuevo Bond es más violento y temerario a la hora de enfrentarse a los villanos y también es castigado de una forma más cruda (en especial en esta película).
The way that, in the midst of being tortured, he still has the guts to be arrogant and enjoy the punishment by throwing the villain off a bit with his attitude was one of my favorite parts. Contrasted with this scene, the sequence of the game of Poker is equally tense and his confrontation with Le Chiffre (the always perfect Mads Mikkelsen), inside and outside the Casino room, helps to balance the violence while maintaining the tension. It's Bond in its purest form: one minute he's sitting in a Montenegrin casino in a perfect suit playing million-dollar poker and inventing a martini, and the next he's bleeding behind the scenes taking on tough killers. It's true that Le Chiffre is only the banker of the real villains, but his appearance, his determination and his coldness (which he only loses when he sees himself being defeated by Bond at the table) make him a more classic Bond-style villain. Maintaining the essence of the character, but at the same time renewing it a bit, adapting it to these times, I think is the key to the success of this film and the reason why I place it in the highest position in my personal ranking.
La forma en que, en medio de ser torturado, aún tiene las agallas para mostrarse arrogante y disfrutar del castigo descolocando un poco al villano con su actitud, fue una de mis partes favoritas. Contrapuesta a esta escena, la secuencia del juego de Póker es igualmente tensa y su enfrentamiento con Le Chiffre (el siempre perfecto Mads Mikkelsen), dentro y fuera de la sala el Casino ayuda a equilibrar la violencia manteniendo la tensión. Es Bond en estado puro: un minuto está sentado en un casino en Montenegro con un traje perfecto jugando una millonaria partida Póker e inventando un martini, y al siguiente está sangrando tras bastidores enfretándose a fuertes asesinos. Es cierto que Le Chiffre es sólo el banquero de los verdaderos villanos, pero su apariencia, su determinación y su frialdad (que sólo pierde cuando se ve siendo derrotado por Bond en la mesa) lo hacen un villano al estilo del Bond más clásico. Mantener la esencia del personaje, pero a su vez renovarlo un poco, adaptándolo a estos tiempos, creo que es la clave del éxito de esta película y la razón por la cual la coloco en el puesto más alto de mi ranking personal.
