Many people don't like them and there are those who think they are something from another era, but musicals are still valid. Almost every awards season there is at least one film made in this format that generates positive reviews, raises money at the box office and wins awards at galas. It wasn't many years ago that we had The Greatest Showman, Tick Tick... Boom!, Wonka or Spielberg's version of West Side Story in theaters and this year, among the films with the most nominations for the Oscars, we have two, so it's a mistake to think that musicals are a thing of the past.

Casi en cada temporada de premios aparece al menos una película hecha en este formato que genera críticas positivas, recauda dinero en taquilla y se lleva premios en las galas. No hace muchos años que tuvimos en cartelera The Greatest Showman, Tick Tick... Boom!, Wonka o la versión de Spielberg de West Side Story y este año, entre las películas con más nominaciones para los premios Oscars, tenemos dos, así que es un error pensar que los musicales son cosa del pasado.
Just like many other movies in its genre, Wicked: Part One is based on a Broadway musical which in turn is based on a novel, which in turn is a spin-off of another. In case some people don't know, I'll give some context. Even if you haven't read the book or seen the 1930s movie classic you must have heard about The Wizard of Oz and the adventures of little Dorothy in that magical land full of witches, dangers and challenges, along with her three particular friends: the lion, the tin man and the scarecrow. Well, in the 90's, Gregory Maguire published the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West which basically tells us the story of the Wicked Witch of the West before Dorothy's arrival in the land of Oz, who is this witch? how was her childhood? what is the reason that she has become who she is? This is then a loose prequel to Frank Baum's book in which - as in so many other stories that have come out in recent years - the protagonist is the villain of the original story. Based on Maguire's novel, Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman created the musical that premiered some twenty years ago and that Jon M. Chu is now directing for the big screen with Holman's own writing along with Dana Fox. Some might think that adapting a Broadway musical to film is an easy task, but it's a challenge to take advantage of the resources of the seventh art, renouncing the immediacy of the theater and create something faithful to the original play.

En caso de que algunas personas no lo sepan, voy a dar algo de contexto. Aunque no hayan leído el libro ni visto el clásico del cine de los años treinta sí deben haber oído sobre The Wizard of Oz y las aventuras de la pequeña Dorothy en esa tierra mágica llena de brujas, peligros y desafíos, junto a sus tres particulares amigos: el león, el hombre de hojalata y el espantapájaros. Bueno, en los años 90, Gregory Maguire publicó la novela Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West que básicamente nos cuenta la historia de la Malvada Bruja del Oeste antes de la llegada de Dorothy a la tierra de Oz, ¿quién es esta bruja? ¿cómo fue su infancia? ¿cuál es la razón de que se haya convertido en quién es? Se trata entonces de una precuela libre del libro de Frank Baum en el que - como en otras tantas historias que han salido en los últimos años - el protagonista es el villano de la historia original. En base a la novela de Maguire, Stephen Schwartz y Winnie Holzman crearon el musical que se estrenó hace unos veinte años y que ahora Jon M. Chu dirige para la gran pantalla contando con la escritura del mismo Holman junto a Dana Fox. Algunos podrían pensar que adaptar un musical de Broadway al cine es tarea fácil, pero representa un desafío aprovechar los recursos del séptimo arte, renunciando a la inmediatez del teatro y crear algo que a su vez se mantenga fiel a la obra.
It turns out that the Wicked Witch of the West is named Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and since she was born she has led a life full of confusion and misunderstanding among her family and acquaintances due to her peculiarities, the most obvious being the green color of her skin. But Elphaba is special. More special than any other inhabitant of Oz, only that many years will have to pass before she feels that way and someone explains to her why what was always a huge burden for her is actually her greatest power.
Resulta que la Malvada Bruja del Oeste se llama Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) y desde que nació llevó una vida llena de confusión e incomprensión entre sus familiares y conocidos debido a sus particularidades, siendo la más evidente el color verde de su piel. Pero Elphaba es especial. Más especial que cualquier otro habitante de Oz, sólo que deberán pasar muchos años antes de que ella lo sienta así y alguien le explique el por qué lo que siempre fue una enorme carga para ella en realidad es su mayor poder.
Due to different things that happen at the beginning of the story, Elphaba ends up attending Shiz, a school of magic (Hogwarts style, but not exactly) and there she meets Galinda Upland (Ariana Grande), a young blonde, very popular, privileged and ambitious in her own way who - in many ways - is everything Elphaba is not. I liked the way the script gradually brought these two characters, who are the protagonists of the film, closer together, without either giving up their essence, but making them understand each other a little more by giving in on certain aspects. Elphaba is applied, studious, usually respectful, but she can also be difficult to deal with because she is always on the defensive (all her childhood she had to defend herself from the attacks and teasing of others). Galinda, on the other hand, seems a more superficial girl, less intellectually brilliant, but possessing a great charisma that makes people love and admire her even if her generosity is not entirely true. And yet, as opposite as they are, their experiences together cause Elphaba's armor to soften a bit and Galinda's banality to deepen, but then, through different circumstances, the friends are forced to go their separate ways and each embark on her own destiny. And all of this is framed by a good deal of songs and dance pieces executed with great precision and skill on spectacular sets, many of which were actually constructed - just as Greta Gerwig did in Barbie - and are not the product of CGI or AI.
Por diferentes cosas que ocurren al principio de la historia, Elphaba termina acudiendo a Shiz, una escuela de magia (al estilo Hogwarts, pero no exactamente) y allí conoce a Galinda Upland (Ariana Grande), una joven rubia, muy popular, privilegiada y ambiciosa a su modo que - de muchas maneras - es todo lo que Elphaba no es. Me gustó la forma en que el guion fue, de a poco, acercando a estos dos personajes, que son las protagonistas de la película, sin que ninguna renunciara a su esencia, pero sí logrando que se entendieran un poco más al ceder en ciertos aspectos. Elphaba es aplicada, estudiosa, normalmente respetuosa, pero también puede resultar difícil de tratar porque siempre está a la defensiva (toda su infancia tuvo que defenderse de los ataques y las burlas de los demás). Por su parte, Galinda parece una chica más superficial, menos brillante intelectualmente, pero poseedora de un gran carisma que hace que la gente la ame y la admire aunque su generosidad no sea del todo verdadera. Y sin embargo, tan opuestas como son, las experiencias que viven juntas hacen que la coraza de Elphaba se suavice un poco y que la banalidad de Galinda se profundice, pero luego, por diferentes circunstancias, las amigas se ven forzadas a tomar caminos diferentes y cada una se embarca en su propio destino. Y todo esto enmarcado en una buena cantidad de canciones y piezas de baile ejecutadas con gran precisión y destreza sobre unos decorados espectaculares, muchos de los cuales fueron construidos realmente - tal como lo hizo Greta Gerwig en Barbie - y no son producto del CGI o la IA.
Like the Broadway musical, which is divided into two acts, the film is divided into two parts, the second of which, Wicked: For Good, is scheduled to be released this year, so in a few months we will be able to know more about what happens with Elphaba, Galinda and the land of Oz, although we already know what the end of the Wicked Witch of the West will be. Al igual que el musical de Broadway que está dividido en dos actos, la película está dividida en dos partes, la segunda de las cuales, Wicked: For Good está prevista para estrenarse este año, así que dentro de algunos meses podremos saber más de lo que ocurre con Elphaba, Galinda y la tierra de Oz, aunque ya conozcamos cuál será el final de la Malvada Bruja del Oeste. También tengo que señalar que el momento final de la primera parte, en donde se interrumpe la historia, fue muy bien escogido.
Wicked: Part One has a good script, tremendous production design, good cinematography, good editing, excellent direction and two wonderful lead performances. Both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande shine in their performances and their singing and dancing abilities. The best part of the movie is when they are together in the same scene, either talking, dancing or singing and the chemistry between the actresses builds this great musical that also has a very good soundtrack. It's a more traditional musical, in the vein of the great musicals of all time (you can feel the Broadway style), but everything works well in this movie. In short, Wicked: Part One is, as a musical, everything that Emilia Perez is not and I find it incomprehensible, not to say offensive, that the latter took home the Golden Globe in the category. It's true that, if we get too picky, it doesn't make sense how adult the students of the Shiz school are, but it's not something to criticize, I think, because the whole movie works well and because although it has that fairy tale halo of very Disney magic, it also has social content, political, some dark conspiracy, philosophical reflections and its cheerful, emotional songs and colorful dance sequences are mixed with a non-linear narrative, great performances and the defense of that well-known maxim that “there is more to see than meets the eye”. A great all-around musical that has 10 Oscar nominations, but it's not going to have it so easy in some of those categories - how many statuettes do you think it will take home? Wicked: Part One tiene un buen guion, un diseño de producción tremendo, buena fotografía, buena edición, una excelente dirección y dos actuaciones protagonistas maravillosas. Tanto Cynthia Erivo como Ariana Grande se lucen en sus actuaciones y sus capacidades para cantar y bailar. Lo mejor de la película es cuando están juntas en la misma escena, ya sea conversando, bailando o cantando y sobre la química entre las actrices se edifica este gran musical que además tiene una banda sonora muy buena. Es un musical más tradicional, en la onda de los grandes musicales de siempre (se nota el estilo Broadway), pero todo funciona bien en esta película. En pocas palabras, Wicked: Part One es, como musical, todo lo que Emilia Pérez no es y encuentro incomprensible, por no decir ofensivo, que esta última se haya llevado el Globo de Oro en la categoría. Es cierto que, si nos ponemos muy exigentes, no tiene sentido lo adultos que son los estudiantes de la escuela Shiz, pero no es algo criticable, creo yo, porque toda la película funciona bien y porque aunque tiene ese halo de cuento de hadas, de magia muy Disney, también tiene contenido social, político, algo de conspiración sombría, reflexiones filosóficas y sus canciones alegres, emotivas y sus coloridas secuencias de baile se mezclan con una narración no lineal, grandes actuaciones y la defensa de esa máxima tan conocida de que "hay más que ver de lo que parece". Un gran musical en toda regla que tiene 10 nominaciones a los premios Oscar, pero que no lo va a tener tan fácil en algunas de esas categorías, ¿cuántas estatuillas creen que se llevarán a casa? I think the problem with modern musicals is they're all too similar, instead of remembering that many of the strong musicals of the past had actual stories as well, the modern ones seem to be structured purely around the music and void of the things that matter, like giving us characters to care for.

I'm a big fan of the musical movie, but I haven't had the chance to see it in theaters yet. From your review, I want to put it on my watch list for another day. I wasn't a fan of Ariana until I saw the positive sparkle in her eyes in the Wicked trailer. I may have been a late bloomer for you, Ariana, but you're awesome to me.

Me gustó la idea de conocer una historia diferente, algo como lo vimos con Maléfica que en realidad no era tan mala sino que la circunstancias la obligaron, lo mismo aquí, desde el principio vemos que no puede ser mala y al final nos dan la razón del porqué.
Los musicales no son lo mío pero está película es muy bonita visualmente y a las canciones no les preste mucha atención 🤭

Tengo curiosidad por ver esta película que ha generado algo de polémica por un asunto de un poster hecho por un fan. Soy del equipo de los que no nos gustan los musicales pero cuando una película es tan sonada me gusta echarle un vistazo para ver si realmente me gusta, de todos modos por todo lo que mencionas sobre fotografía dirección, guion y sobre todo actuaciones, parece ser una muy buena opción, gracias por compartir tu reseña.
Sí, conozco varias personas a quienes no les gustan los musicales, pero este tipo de películas son un poco más que sólo cantar y bailar (que no es menor mérito, en todo caso) y si uno presta atención al resto casi se olvida de que es un musical y se aprecian otras virtudes del film.
