Hi guys, today I'm making my first film review for Hive. The movie is called "Upgrade". I found it recently on Netflix and it seems it's been sitting there for a while now before I finally got the chance to watch it.
"Upgrade" is a thrilling and thought-provoking sci-fi action film, released in 2018, that seamlessly blends gripping action sequences with an exploration of the ethical implications of advanced technology. It is directed by Leigh Whanell and stars Logan Marshall-Green as the protagonist.
The story revolves around Grey Trace, a technophobe who becomes paralyzed and loses his wife in a brutal attack. Seeking vengeance and desperate for mobility, Grey undergoes an experimental surgery implanting STEM, an AI chip into his body. This procedure grants him superhuman abilities enabling him to walk again and seek retribution. As he embarks on a quest to avenge his wife's death, Grey becomes entangled in a web of conspiracy, discovering the capabilities of STEM and the moral implications of merging man and machine. The film unfolds as a gripping tale of revenge, unveiling the consequences of technological advancements and blurring the lines between humanity and AI.
I found the movie surprisingly engaging and well-crafted, despite its familiar plot (I intentionally avoid checking a movie's Rotten Tomato review and score beforehand to allow for a more unbiased evaluation). While the acting wasn't exceptional, Logan delivered a strong performance in his role, capturing the character's emotional depth and transformation. He also at times brought humor to certain scenes, adding a lighthearted touch even when it wasn't his intention. Additionally, the film showcased remarkable action sequences and robust cinematography that evoked the reminiscent style of "The Matrix." The visual depiction of a near-future world is well-crafted, creating a believable setting for the story.
The movie I think I can compare it to in terms of sharing the same thematic elements is the film "Robocop". Both films explore the integration of technology with the human body, showcasing a protagonist who gains enhanced abilities through technological enhancements. While "Robocop" leans towards a blend of action and social commentary, "Upgrade" focuses more on the integration of technology into the human body and its consequences. Furthermore, as previously noted, the film's texture and action sequences harked back to the nostalgia of the original Matrix movie.
I would definitely recommend this movie for sci-fi enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys this genre. It's definitely worth your time. Personally, I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
