Eloise Turner, a young woman fascinated by the Swinging Sixties, lives in a rural town in Cornwall, but when she is accepted into the London College of Fashion she goes to London to become a designer. At night, Eloise’s dreams follow Sandie, a young singer from the sixties with whom Eloise becomes obsessed.
Last Night in Soho is awesome; the cinematography is very good, especially in the scenes where neon lights are used; the production design and costumes are fantastic, particularly the sixties sets and costumes; the music is phenomenal, highlighting Anya Taylor-Joy’s Downtown performance.
Thomasin McKenzie as a shy but determined small-town woman who arrives in a city where she finds herself unprotected and harassed, and Anya Taylor-Joy as a sixties femme fatale, do a very good job that is complemented by the performances of Matt Smith, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, Michael Ajao and Synnøve Karlsen.
Last Night in Soho is the kind of film that is strong in its images, music and performances, but that its level drops with the story and the depth of the characters, since the script is relatively tricky and the secondary characters feel like puppets, with arbitrary motivations or stereotypical personalities. On the other hand, I feel the movie would be better without its last scene, leave me a comment about this.
In Edgar Wright’s filmography, Last Night in Soho is closer to Baby Driver than to Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End or Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, maintaining the use of sixties music and its color scheme, but with a darker and more serious narrative tone.
In general, Last Night in Soho is an entertaining film, visually attractive, with good performances and a script that is not perfect, but good enough to enjoy.
Last Night in Soho, Last Night in Soho, Last Night in Soho... It’s a good title, isn’t it? One fun fact I don’t want to leave out is that Edgar Wright was inspired a song by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, which was recommended by Quentin Tarantino, that’s why the director of Inglourious Basterds appears in the film’s credits. Edgar Wright finally decided to use the name Last Night in Soho after discarding titles such as Red Light Area or The Night Has a Thousand Eyes, because films with similar names existed: Red Lights and The Night Has a Thousand Eyes. I know it’s not important, but I want to mention it because I think the name of the movie is great.
