When, in 2014, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould's announcement of the Breaking Bad prequel was aired, it was greeted with considerable scepticism from the fan community around the world. Perhaps out of fear that they would ruin the legacy of the parent series, and that it would not live up to the high expectations everyone had for the project in question. And so 2015 arrived, and we finally got to see the first season of Better Call Saul, the most anticipated spin-off of recent television. Thus began the story of James Morgan McGill, Jimmy or Saul Goodman (including Gene Takavic, it should be noted) and everything that made this character end up becoming the unscrupulous, greedy and extremely materialistic lawyer that we all observed in Breaking Bad...
However, today's post is not an ode to the plot of the series, or an analytical review. It is more didactic. The real purpose of these lines is to expose, from my perspective and optics, the 10 best episodes of Better Call Saul. Here you will be able to see a small summary/analysis/opinion of each of the moments where many things started to make sense. Both for the story of the main character (Jimmy McGill) and the psychology of the character. And part of the mystical appeal of the series comes precisely from the time the creators took to explain absolutely all the plots, subplots and certain characters that were once named in Breaking Bad but we didn't know about.
Cuando en 2014, el anuncio por parte de Vince Gilligan y Peter Gould, sobre la precuela de Breaking Bad fue emitido, fue recibido con bastante escepticismo por parte de la comunidad de fans en todo el mundo. Quizá, por temor a que arruinaran el legado de la serie madre, y que no cumpliera con las altas expectativas que todos tenían sobre el proyecto en cuestión. Así llegó el 2015, y por fin pudimos ver la primera temporada de Better Call Saul, el spin-off más esperado de la televisión reciente. Comenzaba así a historia de James Morgan McGill, Jimmy o Saul Goodman (incluido Gene Takavic, cabe destacar) y todo lo que hizo que este personaje terminara decantándose por ser el abogado sin escrúpulos, ávaro y extremadamente materialista que todos observamos en Breaking Bad...
No obstante, el post de hoy no es una oda al argumento de la serie, o una review analítica. Es más didáctico. El verdadero objetivo de estas líneas es exponer, desde mi perspectiva y óptica, los 10 mejores episodios de Better Call Saul. Aquí podrás ver un pequeño resumen/análisis/opinión de cada uno de los momentos donde muchas cosas empezaron a cobrar sentido. Tanto para la historia del personaje principal (Jimmy McGill) como la psicología del personaje. Y es que, parte del atractivo místico que tiene la serie, proviene precisamente de los tiempos que se tomaron los creadores para explicarnos absolutamente todas las tramas, subtramas y ciertos personajes que fueron alguna vez nombrados en Breaking Bad pero que no conocíamos.
This is how we witness the world of television series emulating the art of cinema. Better Call Saul is both a black comedy and a family thriller, but it is also a drama with alternative peaks of classic action. With this series, so many things changed forever. It received the best reviews, from all specialised sectors in the world of audiovisual creation. No wonder, let's not forget that for people who have already seen the entire series, and even for those who have only partially seen it, the consideration about the argumental, television, photographic and technical value of this series rivals, and in some cases, even surpasses the very series that originated it all: yes, I am talking about being above Breaking Bad.
Hence the origin of the title of this post: "one of the best series ever created". And I'm not exaggerating. It has it all, cinematic shots, camera movements, editing, direction, solid and consistent script; it took the time the characters and the story needed without seeming dense or over-explained, and to top it off, it plays with the viewer's intelligence. The show treats its audience as if they are intelligent and logical. Hence, many people feel the need to re-watch it. To be able to appreciate, without surprises, the more intimate, tenuous aspects and references that exist within the cinematic universe of Breaking Bad. This post is for true lovers of the series and the difficulty of differentiating the television format from traditional cinema.
Es así como somos testigos de cómo el mundo de las series de televisión emulan al arte del cine. Better Call Saul es tanto una comedia negra, como un thriller familiar, pero también es un drama y con picos alternativos de acción clásica. Con esta serie, muchísimas cosas cambiaron para siempre. Recibió las mejores críticas, de todos los sectores especializados en el mundo de la creación audiovisual. No es para menos, no olvidemos que para las personas que ya vieron la totalidad de la serie, e incluso para quienes sólo la han visto parcialmente, la consideración sobre el valor argumental, televisivo, fotográfico y técnico de esta serie rivaliza, y en algunos casos, llega a superar a la mismísima serie que originó todo: sí, me refiero a estar por encima de Breaking Bad.
De ahí el origen del título de este post: "una de las mejores series jamás creadas". Y no exagero. Lo tiene todo, planos cinematográficos, movimientos de cámaras, montaje, dirección, guión sólido y consistente; se tomó los tiempos que necesitaban los personajes y la historia sin parecer denso o sobre explicado, y por si fuera poco, juega con la inteligencia del espectador. La serie trata a su audiencia como si fueran inteligentes y lógicos. De allí, que muchas personas sientan la necesidad de reveerla. Para poder apreciar, sin sorpresas, los aspectos más íntimos, tenues y las referencias que existen dentro del universo cinematográfico de Breaking Bad. Este post, es para verdaderos amantes de las series y de la dificultad de diferenciar el formato televisivo del cine tradicional.

Empiezo este Top Ten, en el episodio que marca un antes y un después en la psicología, empatía, y en la personalidad de Jimmy McGill. Aquí, el hermano mayor del personaje principal, y hasta el momento, el antihéroe por excelencia, tras una serie de eventos que anticipan su caída, ostracismo y abandono personal, decide cesar de vivir. La escena final de este capítulo es fundamental para la trama de toda la serie, y genera un aura de silencio, tristeza profunda y sobre todo, nihilismo. Haciendo que el espectador sienta y recuerde que la vida es lo único realmente precioso dentro de la existencia. Además, se conocen los verdaderos pareceres de los dos hermanos; tanto Chuck como Jimmy...

In Breaking Bad, Mike is the character in charge of following Gustavo Fring's orders. He is the "enforcer", the planner and the one responsible for employing the tactics (literally any tactic) to achieve the assigned mission. He is seen, then, as a simple pawn; a thug with emotional detachment and a strange air of paternalism. In Better Call Saul, in this episode, we get a glimpse into Mike's past, learn that he had a son, who was also a cop like his father and who ended up in the worst possible way. In addition, we see how Mike arrives in Albuquerque, and what he did in the not so distant past in order to take justice into his own hands. It's a gem from start to finish, and we witness Jonathan Banks' acting range at its best.

En Breaking Bad, Mike es el personaje encargado de seguir las órdenes de Gustavo Fring. Es el "ejecutador", planificador y el responsable de emplear la táctica (literalmente cualquiera) para lograr la misión asignada. Es visto, entonces, como un simple peón; un matón con desapego emocional y un extraño aire de paternidad muy marcado. En Better Call Saul, en este episodio, podemos ver el pasado de Mike, conocer que tuvo un hijo, que también fue policía como su padre y que acabó de la peor manera posible. Además, vemos cómo Mike llega a Albuquerque, y lo que hizo en un pasado no tan lejano para poder hacer justicia por mano propia. Es una joya de inicio a fin, y somos testigos del alcance actoral de Jonathan Banks en todo su esplendor.

Jimmy, not so long ago turned Saul Goodman, weaves a strategy to break Kim Wexler's boss during the negotiation over Mr. Acher, whom Goodman represents. All seems on the verge of closure, when Saul not only fails to follow the plan that was previously established between the two parties, but without telling Kim, he chooses to unleash a strategy to blackmail Kim's boss. He gathers evidence about an alleged misappropriation of image by the bank Wexler represents, does not accept the terms offered by the other side, and to top it all off, deceives everyone, including Kim, by showing a video of "affected people" ranting against Mesa Verde. Kim ends up completely fooled, looking bad in front of her bosses and closing the episode with an epic confrontation between the two; Jimmy and Kim.
Puesto #8, "Wexler vs Goodman" S05, E06
Jimmy, convertido desde hace no mucho en Saul Goodman, teje una estrategia para doblegar al jefe de Kim Wexler durante la negociación sobre el Sr. Acher, a quien representa Goodman. Todo parece a punto de cerrarse, cuando Saul no sólo no sigue el plan que estaba previamente establecido entre las dos partes, sino que sin decirle a Kim, elige desatar una estrategia para chantajear al jefe de Kim. Reúne evidencia sobre una supuesta usurpación de imagen por parte del banco que representa Wexler, no acepta los términos que le ofrece la otra parte, y por si fuera poco, engaña a todos, incluida Kim, al proyectar un vídeo donde "personas afectadas" despotrican contra Mesa Verde. Kim termina engañada por completo, luciendo mal ante sus jefes y cerrando el episodio con una confrontación épica entre los dos; Jimmy y Kim.

Nacho, like Lalo, are two names first mentioned in Breaking Bad. When Jesse and Walter kidnap, gag and threaten Saul into accepting the criminal case they are involved in. Of course, at the time, no one knew for sure what it was all about. It is only in Better Call Saul that we see the development, rise and fall of Nacho Varga, and it is precisely in this episode that we see how the story of this profoundly well-constructed piece of the show's narrative ends. Immolate is the best word to describe Nacho's sacrifice. Where he not only gives his life to protect what he loves most, his father, but also confronts Héctor Salamanca and closes the episode with a monologue that chills the blood for its shocking and ferocious content.
Puesto #7, "Rock and Hard Place" S06, E03
Nacho, al igual que Lalo, son dos nombres mencionados por primera vez en Breaking Bad. Cuando Jesse y Walter secuestran, amordazan y amenazan a Saul para que acepte el caso criminal donde ellos están involucrados. Claro, en ese momento nadie sabía a ciencia cierta de qué se trataba. Es recién en Better Call Saul, que vemos el desarrollo, auge y caída de Nacho Varga, y precisamente en este episodio, es cuando vemos cómo termina la historia de esta pieza profundamente bien construida del relato de la serie. Inmolarse es la mejor palabra para describir el sacrificio de Nacho. Donde no sólo entrega su vida para proteger a lo que más ama, su padre, sino que enfrenta a Héctor Salamanca y cierra el episodio con un monólogo que hiela la sangre por su contenido impactante y feroz.

One of my favourite episodes, hands down. I was very hesitant to place it in this position, as I had to watch the series a couple of more times until I fell in love with this episode. "Winner" is the name of this marvel, a clear allusion to a trait that Jimmy McGill learned that later cemented the path to being Saul Goodman. We see the relationship (in flashback) between him and his brother Chuck. We witness a beautiful moment between the two, singing the beautiful ABBA song "The Winner Takes It All" and it inevitably strikes a chord with us as we witness that everything between them could have been absolutely and completely different.

De mis episodios favoritos, sin lugar a duda. Dudé mucho al colocarlo en esta posición, ya que para valorarlo como es debido, tuve que ver la serie un par de veces más hasta enamorarme por completo de este capítulo. "Winner" es el nombre de esta maravilla, es una clara alusión a una característica que aprendió Jimmy McGill que luego cimentó el camino para ser Saul Goodman. Vemos la relación (en un flashback) que hubo entre él y su hermano Chuck. Somos testigos de un momento hermoso entre los dos, cantando la preciosa canción de ABBA "The Winner Takes It All" e inevitablemente toca nuestra fibra al presenciar que todo entre ellos pudo haber sido absoluta y completamente diferente.

This is the episode of the series that leads to the absolute disgrace of the plot. And not because it ruins anything from an objective assessment of the plot, but because it destroys the most precious thing Jimmy McGill has as a function of what his nature is: the most obsessive vanity. Here we see how Saul has to go and collect 7 million dollars in cash, almost on the edge of the desert border between Mexico and the United States, in order to pay the bail of his "defendant", who is none other than Lalo Salamanca, the leader of the Juárez Cartel. But not before asking for 100,000 dollars as part payment for doing this "favour". A raw episode, full of ups and downs, comedy, classic Breaking Bad action and moments of introspection and appreciation of life itself...

Este es el capítulo de la serie que lleva a la absoluta desgracia de la trama. Y no porque arruine algo desde la valoración objetiva del argumento, sino porque destruye lo más preciado que tiene Jimmy McGill en función de lo que es su naturaleza: la más obsesiva vanidad. Aquí vemos cómo Saul tiene que ir a recoger 7 millones de dólares en efectivo, casi al borde de la desértica frontera entre México y Estados Unidos para poder pagar la fianza de su "defendido", que no es otro más que Lalo Salamanca, el líder del Cártel de Juárez. Eso sí, no sin antes pedir 100.000 dólares como parte de pago por hacer ese "favor". Un episodio crudo, lleno de altibajos, comedia, acción clásico a lo Breaking Bad y momentos de introspección y valoración de la vida misma...

If there's one thing about this episode, it's precisely the insight into part of Kim's mentality that has been unclear up to this point. We can witness how it is through Kim that Jimmy starts the ruse and the scam that will target Howard Hamlin. Why? Because both of them (Kim and Jimmy) want to speed up the whole Sandpiper legal process, so that it benefits Jimmy and he can collect part of the proceeds from the class action lawsuit that happened in season one. It's "unforgivable" because there are no scruples about damaging the reputation and honour of another human being, who, although uptight, self-important and somewhat self-centred, in no way deserved what ends up happening to him...

Si algo tiene este capítulo, es precisamente la compresión sobre parte de la mentalidad de Kim, que hasta el momento no había quedado claro. Podemos ser testigos de cómo es a través de Kim que Jimmy da inicio con la artimaña y la estafa que tendrá como objetivo a Howard Hamlin ¿Por qué? Porque ambos (Kim y Jimmy) desean acelerar todo el proceso legal de Sandpiper, para que beneficie a Jimmy y así poder cobrar parte de las ganancias por la demanda colectiva que sucedió en la temporada uno. Es "imperdonable" porque no hay escrúpulos para dañar la reputación y el honor de otro ser humano, que aunque estirado, con ínfulas de grandeza y algo egocéntrico, de ningún modo merecía lo que le termina sucediendo...

We enter the final posts. In this episode we see the resolution of Chuck's lawsuit against Jimmy to disbar him from practicing law. This last one, has to defend himself and the series introduces us again to Huel, a key character for the plot of the chapter. In addition, in the beginning of the same one, we see how in 9 minutes and some seconds more the lie is constructed that Chuck constructed to hide his disease to his ex-wife with the aim of not moving away her more from him and that she does not judge him. This chapter is the confession of many emotions that Chuck has always felt and kept about Jimmy. All originated by a chicanery that Kim and Jimmy brilliantly devise and execute. A luxury of an episode.

Entramos a los puestos definitivos. En este capítulo vemos la resolución de la demanda legal que interpuso Chuck ante Jimmy para inhabilitarlo de ejercer la abogacía. Este último, tiene que defenderse y la serie nos introduce de nuevo a Huel, un personaje clave para la trama del capítulo. además, en el inicio del mismo, vemos como en 9 minutos y algunos segundos más se construye la mentira que construyó Chuck para ocultarle su enfermedad a su ex esposa con el objetivo de no alejarla más de él y que no le juzgue. Este capítulo es la confesión de muchas emociones que siente y guarda Chuck sobre Jimmy desde siempre. Todo originado por una artimaña (chicanery) que idea y ejecuta brillantemente Kim y Jimmy. Un lujo de episodio.

It's the finale of Better Call Saul. We get to witness the last appearance of the three roles embodied by James McGill. That is, Saul Goodman, Jimmy McGill and above all Gene Takavic. It is the closure of all the parts. Where he is caught by the police and arrested, but not before managing to reduce his entire sentence for the events of Breaking Bad to 7 years, in a low security prison and with ice cream on Fridays, everything falls apart when Saul hears from Kim again, and decides to tell the absolute truth when he is presented before the judge who will decide the future of this character. Gene and Saul "die", and we see Jimmy again, accepting his reality, confessing and above all dedicating to Kim every single word and gesture we see in this episode.

Es el final de Better Call Saul. Podemos presenciar la última aparición de los tres roles que personifica James McGill. Es decir, Saul Goodman, Jimmy McGill y sobre todo Gene Takavic. Es el cierre de todas las partes. Donde al verse atrapado por la policía es apresado pero no sin antes lograr disminuir toda su condena por los eventos de Breaking Bad a 7 años, en una cárcel de baja seguridad y con helados los viernes, todo se desmorona cuando Saul vuelve a saber de Kim, y decide contar la verdad absoluta cuando es presentado ante la juez que decidirá el futuro de este personaje. "Mueren" Gene y Saul, y volvemos a ver a Jimmy, aceptando su realidad, confesando y sobre todo dedicándole a Kim cada una de las palabras y gestos que vemos en este episodio.

For me, the best episode of the series, hands down. Lalo, after seeing a cockroach pass by while spying on Gus Fring's actions in the laundry room, decides to "visit" Jimmy at Kim's flat. What nobody expected? That moments before Lalo's arrival, Howard shows up. Completely drunk, shattered because his reputation, honour, credibility and talent have been destroyed by Kim and Jimmy's scam against him. Still, he's not violent, he just reminds them that whatever they do, they did it because it turns them on; they have no compassion or scruples about anyone. Their end is coming, and they don't know it. Lalo arrives at the flat, Howard is surprised, asks "who are you?", he replies "nobody, I'm nobody", Howard turns around, Lalo puts a silencer on his gun, and shoots him in the left temple, killing him on the spot Did Howard deserve this kind of death? No, but it still happened... Impressive close.

Para mi, el mejor episodio de la serie, sin lugar a dudas. Lalo, después de ver una cucaracha pasar mientras espiaba las acciones de Gus Fring en la lavandería, decide "visitar" a Jimmy en el apartamento de Kim ¿Lo que nadie esperaba? Que instantes antes de la llegada de Lalo, se apareciera Howard. Completamente borracho, destrozado porque su reputación, honor, credibilidad y talento han sido destruidos por la estafa que llevaron a cabo Kim y Jimmy en su contra. Aún así, no es violento, solo les recuerda que todo lo que hacen, lo hicieron porque les excita; no tienen compasión ni escrúpulos con nadie. Su fin está por venir, y no lo sabe. Llega Lalo al apartamento, Howard se extraña, pregunta "¿quién eres?", éste responde "nadie, soy nadie", Howard se gira, Lalo coloca un silenciado en su arma, y le dispara en la sien izquierda, matándolo en el acto ¿Merecía este tipo de muerte Howard? No, pero aún así sucedió... Impresionante cierre.
