Life is like a musical… isn’t it? At any point a new song of trouble appears with dances of disappointment. I will not lie, we live in a walking dream, we project goals expecting triumphs right off the bat, aspiring big things while remaining small. If anyone knew much about this, it was Jonathan Larson, a playwright who made his life a spectacle for dreamers most in need of inspiration. A work, a young enthusiast… 30 years that are the most frustrating gap of time running out. Can reality beat the will? We look at part of the answer in Tick, Tick… Boom! A musical that will reveal the story of one of Broadway’s greatest visionaries.

Today we will analyze another of the great candidates for the Oscars to find out why she has so enthusiastically hypnotized the most fussy critics in Hollywood. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Steven Leveson will guide us through a Tour where music and drama prevail with impressive dances, recounting not only the life of one of the most successful playwrights, but also we look at that reality that succumbs to art with an ethical merely reprehensible. Is commercial interest above talent?

Jonathan Larson is a young man with a wonderful talent for creating musicals just by looking at his rice bowl. Like all New York dreamers, Larson hopes to become a revolutionary in the arts, more precisely, in the theaters of Broadway. After investing 8 years of his life in a musical about aliens, love and human ethics, he decides to launch the fruit of so much effort and sleepless days into stardom, sacrificing friendships and great loves to finally get out of the not-so-pleasant world of rented apartments and waiter jobs.

Narrated from his own play, to the sound of Tick, Tick and Boom, Larson turns his wild and outrageous life into a musical for the deliberation of dreams, the frustration and the terrible disappointments that come with advancing age. 30. Under the piano and rock, conglomerated by the time that is running out, Jon, as the compadres know him, will show us that great ladder of needles that dreamers must climb to reach the painful dream they pursue. Some reach it, others simply give in to disappointments. Why is Larson so different? Or rather: How is it that this film manages to be so different? Let’s take a closer look at this movie.

A musical about life

Tick, Tick… Boom is not a drifting musical; each dramatic note is inspired by the original work of Jonathan Larson; his gestures, his piano, his microphone and the true account of him before he achieved stardom. It is an autobiographical work, a piece that takes us to the memory of a man with a different vision and a sharp creativity. Minute after minute we feel on Broadway, welcomed by applause and spontaneous laughter, inspired by the life of a visionary for whom things do not turn out as well as he projects them. Thus, the drama is somewhat more real by revealing the loves that are not lasting and the sacrifices between feeling and victory.

Steven Leveson crafts a script more inspired by life, without going into love melodramas or facets of romance. This is how music gains strength with the loss of friends, the lack of money to pay the rent, the visions of a promising future and an effort that does not yield, artistic commercialism and the hammer reality. This is the work that we all sing every day, right? Except unlike Larson, we don’t have a big band to shine a light on everything that ails us. In short, this film is not a musical for broken hearts, quite the opposite! It is a musical about how to build, in the face of reality, a hard heart.

daring direction

Lin-Manuel Miranda moves us through a film full of sequences, invigorating the musical axis between the protagonist’s own vision and the events that he is narrating from what is his own play. The camera migrates from here to there, between steps and splendid images of a dreamy New York.

We also look at two axes of the same plane; a representative memory split in half between theater and life, music and emotions. Even so, everything revolves as part of a whole, images being that abbreviation for what can go through the viewer’s mind: We are in a Broadway play in front of Jonathan Larson! That genius of musical notes and renovating stories. How is he able to do it? How did it last so little? Part of those emotional conjectures gain strength under the direction of Lin-Manuel Miranda. Not bad for his first job as a director.

one life, three characters

Tick, Tick… Boom, despite being a work about the life of Jonathan Larson, also contemplates those great friendships that seem to be also strong protagonists. Here appears a triangle connected with love and friendship at the vertices, and at whose tip is none other than Andrew Garfield, who flaunts his charisma and his long smile to nuance a Larson with complex emotions. Admittedly, Garfield knows how to play empathetic and outgoing characters, with effort that seems minimal on camera. I have no doubt that this has been one of his best artistic works.

Alexandra Shipp is a Susan who also has aspirations, ones that Larson does not share in his quest for success for himself and everyone. This is how these lovers are torn between the dream of one and the other, reliving a balance that at some point has to lean to one side. Suffice it to say that in a world of different goals, sacrifices for love are weak and unbelievable. Isn’t that the reality?

Finally we have Michael played by Robin de Jesús, who is the best friend of a Larson that life will make him decide for the second time; friendship or stardom? Michael also has his own problems although Larson insists on giving importance only to his own. In the midst of the HIV crisis and a society full of prejudices, Michael needs what he considers his brother to talk about his problems. The only problem is that Larson is not like before, and that friendship now hangs in the balance.

Is Tick, Tick Boom! Worth watching?

Although this Film seems to be another roll of music, comedies and some drama, Tick, Tick… Boom is presented to us from the beginning as a play under the dream of one of the great characters of New York theaters. ; This allows each song and melody to gain strength with a much more verbose argument compared to other musical dramas where the coherence of the facts come and go without a background support. Not that Tick, Tick… Boom! May be the best movie of all time, but it has a charm that outshines minute by minute. We’ll see if this is enough to catch the Academy critics.

I liked Andrew Garfield's performance, if he is nominated for an Oscar I think he will win it. Although deep down I want Cumberbatch to be nominated and win. But the academy always prefers this kind of characters, based on real events. anyway the film is good and very emotional.

The race for the statuette for best actor will be difficult. Both Garfield and Cumberbatch have done good jobs, although the remaining candidates still need to be defined and these two confirmed. I think this month they will announce the official nominees for the Oscars.
