The highly controversial ceremony of the Golden Globes left a marked path for the next Academy Awards Oscars. Movies and actors appeared after a long list of projections and unexpected surprises. Among them, El Poder del Perro, a feature film that intertwines drama and psychological thriller in scenarios as unique as they are challenging, and I say challenging because of the homogeneous preparation of this film, which will confuse your perception as a viewer and lead you to question the slight dilemma between "loving to be loved" and "being loved to hate". Not everyone who claims to love you really does... sometimes love is like a rabbit trap: he traps you until he slowly leads you to your destruction.

Today we will analyze every detail of this movie that has shocked the most critical voices in Hollywood, placing it as a true work of art. This film, Inspired by the book by Thomas Savage, is the darkest representation of silent enemies, those who smile at you and hug you, but secretly blow poison in your ear. Cowboys, landscapes and fragile secrets are strengthened by the hand of Jane Campion, a director who has won praise after making this work with great honor to the Western. What is so special about The Power of the Dog? Does it really deserve the award for best film of the year? Let's make an adventure through this film and find out.

Synopsis

George and Phil are two rancher brothers from Georgia somewhere in Montana. Between them the tension and problems are never lacking, despite the fact that both remain together due to the bond of the family and the hard occupations of the wealthy of the old west. On one side is Phil, a tough, wild, rude and impertinent man who doesn't like weakness and femininity. And on the more consistent, reasonable and fully generous side is George, who, unlike Phil, is much more open-hearted and much more willing to accept the love his brother sorely needs.

And it is precisely George's decision to be happy with a widow and her son that generates a conflict in Phil's feelings... Why did his brother marry a woman sealed with the past of alcohol and death? and even worse, why did his brother bring the effeminate son of his hateful fiancée to the ranch? Unable to accept the unwanted new members of his family, Phil unleashes a war against Rose, who in addition to suffering the collateral effects of her marriage to George, must deal with the humiliation suffered by her son Peter for being more sensitive, loving and alien. to the rusticity of the brute man that prevails in the custom of the old west.

Succumbed to Phil's hatred and mistreatment, Rose spirals into a spiral of pain that slowly consumes her life, to the point of condemning her to the same suffering she once suffered at the hands of her late husband. What no one counted on, not even the most astute, was Peter, the mannered son who, after connecting with Phil's rusticity and delving into the depths of his feelings, begins to discover his unexplored past and with it the entire accumulation Sensitivity hidden behind a thin layer of feigned strength.

This is how Phil uses his charms not only to captivate Peter, but also to discredit Rose with the child of her womb. What he didn't expect came later in a vengeful, sinister and downright cunning way; Fooled by love and seemingly innocent charisma, Phil falls into the deadly trap of his long-time enemy; taking with her all the suffering and pain of his uncomfortable presence. Now, how is it that this film is capable of deceiving us with such inconsistent plot nuances? Let's highlight more thoroughly the making of this film.

A drama with dark tones

The Power of the Dog is not the typical film that reveals the emotional conflicts of the characters as the main line of action, rather, it uses the dramatic resource to hide the true premise of the work: a barely sensitive psychological thriller, silent, tinyly present for camouflage a sinister environment in seemingly sentimental images. It is not what we see at first sight, it is what is hidden behind; the plot gives us clues to the dark setting in which the events take place, but by letting ourselves be carried away by what our eyes see, we are unable to decipher the objective of the film until its final outcome.

In short, we are talking about a double-edged feature film, which cuts on one side more than the other. And guess what? Wounds are impossible to heal even with the greatest of bandages, or massage creams, or even sweets to forget the ailments. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is capable of erasing anger after pain... Do you know what I mean? Precisely, this allegory comes to life in a film where really, nothing is what it seems.

A challenging Western

Jane Campion has been able to move the cards both in the direction of the feature film and in the writing of the script. The high-sounding premises of those old western movies are buried under a different guideline; no guns, no deathmatches, no bandits or player piano wars. In El Poder del Perro, it is not necessary to show those delirious action scenes to give vigor to the Western genre, because, after all, the subtlety of this film is sketched in a more psychological, sick, more frenetic context. Campion uses the beauty contrasted in the camera to reveal the clues of a great puzzle; rudimentary and wild landscapes are nothing more than a trap for reasoning. It's impossible not to be fooled And those are the best movies! The ones that make you think a lot. Undoubtedly, an achievement of this great director.

Emotionally dark characters

Each character in Power of the Dog has a dark background that triggers the premise, dividing it into two parts of a whole. We have a Phil personified by Benedict Cumberbatch, who left his superhero costume to show us a man who, although he seems to be a monster, is nothing more than a weak and fragile piece of his own desires; of past love and repressed sexuality. Everything revolves around him, but that's not why it's his story. The point is that Phil is that clear example that when the family comes first, there is no love worth.

Kirsten Dunst brings us Rose, a woman with fragile feelings that Phil will torture in every possible way; she is the trigger, the piece that drives the plot from one side to the other, between desire and death. We look at a decadent Rose, convulsed and one step away from destruction. Kirsten handles her role very well, giving us from the beginning a character in need, lonely and who only wants to be happy.

Kodi Smit-Mc Phee is Peter, a young man capable of giving his life to save his mother; somewhat delicate but with a lethal perception of life, this boy will be the fundamental piece of the story; Kodi flaunts a bold character, unnoticed, with somewhat misplaced illusions but, in the end, accurate. He is the other face of a love that must be protected, even sacrificing everything he apparently loves to achieve it.

And to close we have George, a less wild and more passive rancher than his fellow cowboys. Jesse Plemons is the one who makes a loving and empathetic character, very opposed to his brother Phil, but despite everything he loves him as his blood brother. Can the family stand before the heart? Without a doubt, George prefers to listen only to what his heart dictates, although he must face his own brother to be happy.

Is The Power of the Dog worth watching?

The Power of the Dog is a story with delusional plot lines, the kind that at first glance seem to show you one thing but as the minutes go by reveal a completely different outcome. We look at a mirage as a plot, a series of dramatic events that only deceive us with gestures, but give us clues with images and dialogue with double meanings. Those who look closely are able to see what is really behind such beauty and eroticism: something dark, sinister and completely sick. Never dare to question the nature of the simple, the silly, the unnecessary... sometimes the insignificant turns out to be more dangerous than many think.
