Imagine dying frightened and in pain and having that as the only part of you which survives.
Annihilation was released in 2018, based on the novel by Jeff VanderMeer, the first story in a trilogy published in 2014. The director and writer of this film is Alex Garland who, I imagine, you will already know his work as he delighted us with Ex Machina (2014) and, recently, with the series Devs (2020) and the movie Men (2022).
The plot, at first, is simple. Kane, a military man and Lena's husband, returns as if nothing has happened to her, after being missing in action on an unknown mission for the past 12 months. Unable to answer his wife's constant questions, she makes a call for an ambulance as soon as she notices he's starting to bleed. They're intercepted by soldiers before they even reach the hospital.
When Lena awakens, she's informed that the mission Kane was sent on, wasn't located in just any place. She meets Dr. Ventress, who explains to her that, approximately 3 years ago, around a lighthouse appeared what they call The Shimmer, a natural phenomenon whose origin is unknown. This zone continues to expand along the American coast and is a threat with every approach.
The research project was, of course, confidential. All these years military squads, drones and cameras have entered the Shimmer, but never to leave. The only known person who was able to return was Kane, and even then, he stands between life and death.
Lena weighs the possibility that her husband may have been exposed to some virus or strange disease, so she signs up for the next exploration mission to study the phenomenon. She will be part of the first all-female, all-scientist squadron to enter The Shimmer.
Josie Radek, a physicist who just finished her graduate degree; Anya Thorensen, a paramedic from Chicago; Cass Shepard, who studies electromagnetic waves; and Dr. Ventress, a psychologist, will be the companions of Lena, a biologist and former military officer, on this journey into the unknown.
The cast of Annihilation was smartly chosen, as the selected actresses knew how to play their roles very well. As the main protagonist, Natalie Portman, as always, was outstanding; the rudeness and seriousness of the character were well translated in her way of speaking and posture, which I think is very good as we can notice the difference in military experience between her character and the others.
Not only Portman will be our most familiar face, as we'll see Gina Rodriguez, who you may remember as the star of the series Jane The Virgin, and Oscar Isaac, who recently is the lead actor in the new TV show Moon Knight. Tessa Thompson, Tuba Novotny and Jennifer Leigh also did an excellent job.
One of my favorite aspects of this film is the biological setting of The Shimmer. These mutations we witness are interesting and exotic. While the flora and fauna is similar to our own, it's also different. For instance, even if it looks like a crocodile or a bear, it's not entirely certain that it means it eats the same or that its hunting patterns are the same. This uncertainty caused by these mutations and alterations in species we know terrifies and provokes fear in the characters, just as it does for us.
The Shimmer's color scheme and design is beautiful and curious, it does its job well: to make us feel like we're seeing something familiar but new at the same time. Truly fascinating is the concept art.
To enter The Shimmer, beyond a scientific curiosity, you must have a good reason to go into something completely unknown. What reason will be enough to risk suffering the same fate of all those who didn't return from that place?
Ventress wants to face it. You want to fight it. But I don't think I want either of those things.
We can notice a similarity in all the characters: they possess some self-destructive behavior. They annihilate themselves. Not to spoil the movie for you and tell you how each of them was affected by this, but it's like Dr. Ventress tells us at one point:
As a psychologist, I think you're confusing suicide with self-destruction. Almost none of us commit suicide, and almost all of us self-destruct. In some way, in some part of our lives. We drink, or we smoke, we destabilize the good job... and a happy marriage. But these aren't decisions, they're impulses.
Annihilation is the kind of movie where it doesn't explain absolutely every detail, it leaves certain questions unanswered, for you to fill in the blanks. I was quite pleased with this ending, as searching on reddit for the different theories is exciting, even complementing the information with that given in the original books.

El argumento, al principio, es simple. Kane, un militar y esposo de Lena, regresa como si nada ante ella, luego de estar perdido en acción en una misión desconocida desde hace 12 meses. Sin poder responder las preguntas constantes de su esposa, esta hace una llamada a una ambulancia en cuanto nota que comienza a sangrar. Son interceptados por soldados antes de siquiera llegar al hospital.
Cuando Lena despierta, es informada de que la misión a la que fue enviado Kane, no era localizada en un lugar cualquiera. Conoce a la Dra. Ventress, quien le explica que, aproximadamente hace 3 años, alrededor de un faro apareció lo que llaman El Resplandor, un fenómeno natural cuyo origen no es conocido. Dicha zona continúa en expansión por la costa americana y resulta una amenaza con cada acercamiento.
El proyecto de investigación era, por supuesto, confidencial. Todos estos años escuadrones militares, drones y cámaras han entrado al Resplandor, pero para nunca salir. La única persona conocida que pudo volver fue Kane y, aún así, se encuentra entre la vida y la muerte.
Lena sopesa la posibilidad de que su esposo pudo haber sido expuesto a algún virus o extraña enfermedad, así que se apunta en la siguiente misión de exploración para estudiar el fenómeno. El reparto de Annihilation fue escogido inteligentemente, pues las actrices elegidas supieron interpretar muy bien sus papeles. Como protagonista principal, Natalie Portman, como siempre, se lució; la rudeza y seriedad del personaje fueron bien traducidos en su forma de hablar y postura, lo cual me parece muy bien pues podemos notar la diferencia de experiencia militar entre su personaje y las demás.
No sólo Portman será nuestro rostro más conocido, pues veremos a Gina Rodríguez, que recordarán como protagonista de la serie Jane The Virgin, y a Oscar Isaac, que recientemente es el actor principal de la nueva serie Moon Knight. Tessa Thompson, Tuba Novotny y Jennifer Leigh también hicieron un excelente trabajo.
Uno de mis aspectos favoritos de esta película es el entorno biológico del Resplandor. Las mutaciones de las que somos testigos son interesantes y exóticas. La flora y fauna es parecida a la nuestra pero, a su vez, es distinta. Por ejemplo, incluso si tiene la apariencia de un cocodrilo o un oso, no es completamente seguro de que signifique que come lo mismo o que sus patrones de caza sean iguales. La incertidumbre que causa estas mutaciones y alteraciones en especies que conocemos aterroriza y provoca miedo en los personajes, al igual que a nosotros.
La combinación de colores y diseño del Resplandor resulta hermoso y curioso, cumple bien su función: hacernos sentir que estamos viendo algo conocido pero nuevo al mismo tiempo. Es realmente fascinante el concepto artístico.
Para entrar en El Resplandor, más allá de una curiosidad científica, se debe tener una buena razón para adentrarse en algo completamente desconocido. ¿Qué motivo será suficiente para arriesgarte a sufrir el mismo destino de todos los que no regresaron de ese lugar?
Ventress quiere enfrentarlo. Tú quieres luchar contra él. Pero yo no creo que quiera ninguna de esas cosas.
Podemos notar una similitud en todos los personajes: poseen algún comportamiento de autodestrucción. Se aniquilan a sí mismos. No quiero arruinarles la película y contarles cómo cada una de ellas fue afectada por esto, pero es como nos dice la Dra. Ventress en algún momento:
Como psicólogo, creo que estás confundiendo el suicidio con la autodestrucción. Casi ninguno de nosotros se suicida, y casi todos nos autodestruimos. De alguna manera, en alguna parte de nuestras vidas. Bebemos, o fumamos, desestabilizamos el buen trabajo... y un matrimonio feliz. Pero no son decisiones, son impulsos.
Annihilation es la clase de película donde no se explica absolutamente cada detalle, te deja ciertas dudas sin responder, para que llenes tú el espacio sin rellenar. Este final me agradó bastante, pues buscar en reddit las diferentes teorías es emocionante, incluso complementando la información con la dada en los libros originales.

Garland es excelente. No se si la ultima peli (Men)se ha estrenado, solo he visto el trailer. ¿ya la viste? No encuentro información de que Alex Garland sea director de alguno de los episodios de Moon Knight.

La peli estuvo bastante buena y me gusto verla pero no es el tipo de film que yo vería 2 veces. Sí lo recomendaría, sobre todo a los fans del género de scifi. Este mismo director, creo otra peli bastante buena llamada Ex Machina, y hasta ahora, su obra maestra en mi opinión es una serie llamada Devs que de verdad recomiendo que veas.
