Hello friends, good vibes to all.
At last weekend's Critics' Choice Awards a film emerged without making much noise to take the award for Best Picture and indeed I don't think anyone took for granted that Anora could win such recognition even knowing its quality. This was one of the films I most wanted to see because of the great amount of reviews I have read praising Sean Baker's film and which is also nominated for the Oscars; is it possible that it will win? - I wouldn't think so, but I wouldn't be upset at all if that surprise were to happen. Mikey Madison and her role and performance I think will catapult her, she is already a bit known in the movies but I think what she did with Anora is on another level.
Anora is a stripper, prostitute, escort, whatever you want to call her, who works in a club in New York. She is Russian-American and is one of the most sought after women in her job. One day she meets Ivan “Vanya” (Mark Eidelstein) who is a wealthy and impulsive young man, son of a Russian oligarch of great importance in his country. Attracted by the money she decides to spend more time with him than she should to the point that on a trip to Las Vegas Ivan proposes that she marries him with the promise of living the dream life to which she without much thought accepted. She may have done it for economic reasons or because deep down she really wants to change her way of life.
The point here is that when “Vanya's” family finds out about this, they decide by all means to try to annul the marriage, giving rise to the most comical and surreal situations I've seen in cinema in a long time. Then begins the decline of “Ani's” married life, which will make her realize a series of things in an introspective way that will be a punch to the stomach. This film is a combination of comedy, drama and romance with the former being the most pronounced and what gives this film its special touch. It is impossible to get bored with something like this, the film has a heavy aura or undertone that is disguised with really funny scenes. It's almost like a tragicomedy.
The most important thing here is that Sean Baker does not give any information about Anora's life so it is up to the viewer to deduce it by himself and draw his own conclusions. It is not very complicated to do that exercise either because the pattern is almost always the same but it does make the plot much more interesting. I see it as a reflection of what really happens in society; there are issues of violence, love for convenience, lack of affection, prejudice, marginalization by social classes, etc. Beyond laughing you know that what really happens to Anora is serious and I would think that there is nothing wrong with trying to find true love in a job like hers. That it's complicated? - Yes, but I assume she's pretty clear about that.
Good photography, the color palette is very well studied, it goes according to the moods and situations that occur in the film; visually it is very successful despite being something “simple”. Mikey Madison, as I already said, plays an extraordinary role, she carries the weight of the film from beginning to end, it is a roller coaster of emotions which she knows how to manage perfectly. If there was no Demi Moore, the Oscar could be for her without any doubt. I really enjoyed watching this film, one of the best in that list of Oscar nominees. I give it a 9/10, great work by Sean Baker. It's a little over 2 hours long but I recommend it without thinking too much. I leave the trailer below.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
