Hello everyone, fellow fans of good stories, I hope you are doing great today, as always, I come to bring you my review a little late haha, but I've been busy, I recently finished marathoning the second season of The Squid Game and... well, I have so much to tell you! Let's see, first, let's take a second to talk about how great it was that the first season, and how it became a global phenomenon.. i mean, 142 million households watched it, and it accumulated billions and billions of hours of playback... with those numbers, obviously the second season had sky-high expectations, right? the first one not only dominated Netflix worldwide, but also swept all the major awards, breaking barriers for non-English series, with all that hype, I started the second season with a mix of excitement and, let's be honest, a little bit of distrust, I felt that this could go either very well, or very bad...
Well, what we came to... this season is set some years after the events of the first one, and from the first episode you can feel that weight of the time that passed, both in the story and in the expectation we had... they introduced new characters, like Player 120, who is a trans woman with military experience, and Thanos, a Korean rapper with an attitude... let's say... intense.... Player 120 gives another perspective to the group, using her military experience to build strategies that save several people in critical moments, Thanos, on the other hand, adds a touch of chaos... all that unpredictable attitude this crazy guy has generates tension in the group and even endangers the others several times, which gives rise to interesting twists to the main plot... in theory, these additions sounded great, but, honestly, they didn't have the impact I expected. Gambler 120 had her moments, but Thanos I feel like they didn't make the most of him. And speaking of the main character, Gi-hun.. his role took a backseat in this season, and while I understand they wanted to change the focus, it felt like a giant void without him as the center of the story, truthfully.
Hola a todos, compañeros fans de las buenas historias, espero que estén muy bien el día de hoy, como siempre, vengo a traerles mi reseña un poco tarde jaja, pero he estado ocupada, hace poco terminé de maratonear la segunda temporada de El Juego de los Calamares y... bueno, ¡tengo tanto que contarles! A ver, primero, tomémonos un segundo para hablar de lo genial que fue la primera temporada, y de cómo se convirtió en un fenómeno mundial... es decir, 142 millones de hogares la vieron, y acumuló billones y billones de horas de reproducción... con esos números, obviamente la segunda temporada tenía las expectativas por las nubes, ¿no? la primera no sólo dominó Netflix en todo el mundo, sino que también arrasó en todos los premios importantes, rompiendo barreras para las series no inglesas, con todo ese bombo, empecé la segunda temporada con una mezcla de emoción y, seamos honestos, un poco de desconfianza, sentía que esto podría ir o muy bien, o muy mal...
Bueno, a lo que vinimos.. esta temporada se sitúa algunos años después de los eventos de la primera, y desde el primer capítulo se siente ese peso del tiempo que pasó, tanto en la historia como en la expectativa que teníamos nosotros.. metieron personajes nuevos, como la Jugadora 120, que es una mujer trans con experiencia militar, y Thanos, un rapero coreano con una actitud... digamos... intensa.. la Jugadora 120 le da otra perspectiva al grupo, usando su experiencia militar para armar estrategias que salvan a varios en momentos críticos, Thanos, por otro lado, mete un toque de caos.. toda esa actitud impredecible que tiene este loco genera tensión en el grupo y hasta pone en peligro a los demás varias veces, lo que da pie a giros interesantes a la trama principal.. en teoría, estas adiciones sonaban geniales, pero, sinceramente, no tuvieron el impacto que esperaba. La Jugadora 120 tuvo sus momentos, pero a Thanos siento que no lo aprovecharon al máximo. Y hablando del protagonista, Gi-hun.. su papel pasó a un segundo plano en esta temporada, y aunque entiendo que quisieron cambiar el foco, se sintió un vacío gigante sin él como centro de la historia, la verdad.
One thing that Squid Game has always made brutal is that crazy contrast of childish games with brutal and insane violence, right? the whole vibe of being set to play marbles and suddenly you can be in a shootout and you see death everywhere, that was already a unique classic of this story, and it was what made the first season blow everyone's mind. But, well, in this season, the games did change.... but, let's see, I don't know if it's for the better... in fact, only three of the six games are new, that is, they repeated themselves a little bit, right? I felt that... besides, the rhythm also feels slower, as if they lowered the extreme dynamics, partly because there are less games and partly because of... “the subplot of the boat” Oh, God, it felt like filler, seriously, every time that part came up, I was already watching the cell phone, I swear! literally, it's there, it doesn't add ANYTHING to the story, it doesn't go deeper into anything... just est, I think it was a total downgrade, the truth.
But well, changing the subject, let's talk about what I did like, which are the themes that the series touches.. one thing I loved about this series, is its critique of capitalism and human greed, it's super interesting!.. and this second season expands it by reflecting the changes in society, like how hard it is for young people to find work nowadays, the series comments about debt, desperation and the extreme measures people go to for money are still very strong... there is a scene at the beginning that broke my soul, when the recruiter offers a homeless man a choice between food and a lottery ticket.. most choose the ticket.. hoping for the lucky break instead of the food, it's a super powerful metaphor for the game of life in the midst of inequality, and more so in countries where everything has to be perfect, and where most people see you as tools, if you are not generating money, technically your value as a person falls to the ground.
Una cosa que El Juego del Calamar siempre ha hecho brutal es ese contraste loco de juegos infantiles con la violencia brutal y demencial, ¿no? toda esa onda de que te pongan a jugar canicas y de repente puedas estar en una balacera y ves muerte por todos lados, eso ya era un clásico único de esta historia, y fue lo que hizo que la primera temporada nos volara la cabeza a todos. Pero bueno, en esta temporada, los juegos sí cambiaron... pero, a ver, no sé si para bien.. de hecho, solo tres de los seis juegos son nuevos, o sea, se repitieron un poco, ¿no? Yo sentí eso.. además como que el ritmo también se siente más lento, como que le bajaron las dinámicas extremas, en parte porque hay menos juegos y en parte por... "la subtrama del barco" Ay, Dios, me pareció relleno sin más, en serio, cada vez que salía esa parte, yo ya estaba viendo el celular, ¡les juro! literal, está ahí, no aporta NADA a la historia, no profundiza en nada.. solo est, pienso que fue un bajón total, la verdad.
Pero bueno, cambiando de tema, hablemos de lo que sí me gustó, que son los temas que toca la serie.. una cosa que amé de esta serie, es su crítica al capitalismo y la codicia humana, ¡es súper interesante!.. y esta segunda temporada lo expande al reflejar los cambios en la sociedad, como lo difícil que es para los jóvenes encontrar trabajo hoy en día, los comentarios de la serie sobre las deudas, la desesperación y las medidas extremas a las que la gente llega por plata siguen siendo muy fuertes.. hay una escena al principio que me partió el alma, cuando el reclutador le ofrece a un hombre sin hogar elegir entre comida y un billete de lotería.. la mayoría elige el billete.. esperando el golpe de suerte en vez de la comida, es una metáfora súper poderosa del juego de la vida en medio de una desigualdad, y más en países donde todo tiene que ser perfecto, y dónde la mayoría de personas te ven como herramientas, si no estás generando dinero, técnicamente tu valor como persona cae al subsuelo.
Let's see, yes, the social criticism is still there, present, but... it doesn't fit anymore, I think the novelty of the message of the first season is a little bit worn out, let's be honest, and this season feels more like they are repeating the formula, instead of having evolved it... it's like they lacked risk... maybe they could have explored other questionable aspects of society, I don't know, the issue of how technology is changing our relationships, or the ethical dilemmas with scientific advances, the extremes that most Koreans go to for trying to live decently.. something like that to refresh the criticism and greed. Also, the new characters... yeah, there's diversity and all, I liked them, but they lack that depth and charisma that the originals had Remember Ali, Sang-woo and Sae-byeok.. guys, those characters were so well done! you really cared about them, about what was going to happen to them.. these new players... let's see, they're not bad, but they're kind of more flat, you know what I mean, it's inevitable not to buy them with the others, I don't know if it's just me...
And something that will surely divide the fans, is the season finale, yes, gentlemen, they left us with one of those cliffhangers that leave you with your mouth open... clearly this is to prepare us for the third season, which is supposed to come out in 2025, and let's see, I understand that they want to create expectations and all, but to split the season like this... I think it's more of a marketing move... the director came out to say that the story was too long for only one season and that's why he split it in two parts. And yes, I understand that, but it still makes me angry to wait so long for a season that feels incomplete... the cliffhanger is not just a wink, it's a reminder that the real ending is still a year away... and it feels far away.
A ver, sí, la crítica social sigue ahí, presente, pero... ya no pega igual, opino que la novedad del mensaje de la primera temporada ya se gastó un poquito, seamos honestos, y esta temporada se siente más como que están repitiendo la fórmula, en vez de haberla evolucionado.. xomo que les faltó arriesgarse.. quizás podían haber explorado otros aspectos dudosos de la sociedad, no sé, el tema de cómo la tecnología nos está cambiando las relaciones, o los dilemas éticos con los avances científicos, los extremos a los que llegan la mayoría de coreanos por intentar vivir decentemente.. algo así para refrescar la crítica y la codicia. Además, los personajes nuevos... sí, hay diversidad y todo, me gustó, pero les falta esa profundidad y ese carisma que tenían los originales ¿Se acuerdan de Ali, Sang-woo y Sae-byeok? chicos, esos personajes estaban tan bien hechos! uno se preocupaba de verdad por ellos, por lo que les iba a pasar.. estos nuevos jugadores... a ver, no son malos, pero son como más planos, ¿me entienden?, es inevitable no comprarlos con los otros, no sé si seré solo yo..
Y algo que seguro va a dividir a los fans, es el final de temporada, sí, señores, nos dejaron con un cliffhanger de esos que te dejan con la boca abierta.. claramente esto es para prepararnos para la tercera temporada, que se supone que sale en el 2025, y a ver, entiendo que quieren crear expectativa y todo, pero partir la temporada así... a mí se me hace que es más una movida de marketing.. el director salió a decir que la historia le quedó muy larga para una sola temporada y por eso la dividió en dos partes. Y sí, lo entiendo, pero igual me da algo de rabia esperar tanto por una temporada que se siente incompleta.. el cliffhanger no es solo un guiño, es un recordatorio de que el verdadero final todavía está a un año de distancia.. y se siente lejano.
But well, not everything is sadness and disappointment... although I found its flaws, the season still entertains, yes, where it still shines is in the production design, and visually the series is still CRAZY! That vibrant and disturbing aesthetics that made the first season so iconic, is still intact, for example, the scenarios of the new games ... uf! what a level of detail, like that maze, full of lights that turn on and off... I swear I felt claustrophobic and totally lost, the super saturated colors that contrast with the brutality of everything going on, make every scene visually stunning, really, it was intense when they just had to be. The games, yes, maybe not as shocking as before, but they still have their moments of tension, I don't take that away... and the ability of the series to make us think and talk about social problems is still admirable, although this time it's not so new, if I had to give it a grade...
I would give it a 7.5/10. It's good, yes, but it's not excellent... the first season set the bar very high, and although this second one tries to follow that path, it doesn't reach the same height, it's like going to a fancy restaurant and they serve you a spectacular starter, but then, the main course takes a while to arrive... and when it finally arrives, it's delicious, yes, but it doesn't fill you up completely, you know what I mean? You're left half satisfied, knowing that the best is yet to come, supposedly... if you loved the first season, give it a chance! Keep an eye on it, but yes, lower your expectations a little bit... the second season is a decent continuation, but above all, it's like a bridge to what comes next... hopefully the third season will give us the ending that this story really deserves... and well that's all for today, see you in the next reviews, take care, byebye.
Pero bueno, no todo es tristeza y decepción.. a pesar de que le encontré sus fallitas, la temporada igual entretiene, eso sí, dónde se sigue luciendo es en el diseño de producción, y es que visualmente la serie sigue siendo una LOCURA! Esa estética vibrante y perturbadora que hizo que la primera temporada fuera tan icónica, sigue intacta, por ejemplo, los escenarios de los juegos nuevos... ¡uff! qué nivel de detalle, como ese laberinto, lleno de luces que prenden y apagan.. te juro que me sentía claustrofóbico y totalmente perdido, los colores súper saturados que contrastan con la brutalidad de todo lo que pasa, hacen que cada escena sea visualmente impactante, de verdad, era intenso cuando justo tenían que serlo. Los juegos, sí, quizás no tan impactantes como antes, pero igual tienen sus momentos de tensión, eso no se los quito.. y la capacidad de la serie para hacernos pensar y hablar de problemas sociales sigue siendo admirable, aunque esta vez no sea tan novedoso, si tuviera que darle una nota...
Yo le daría un 7.5/10. Es buena, sí, pero no llega a ser excelente.. la primera temporada dejó la vara altísima, y aunque esta segunda intenta seguir por ese camino, no llega a la misma altura, es como ir a un restaurante de lujo y que te sirvan una entrada espectacular, pero después, el plato fuerte como que tarda en llegar.. y cuando por fin llega, está rico, sí, pero no te llena por completo, ¿me entienden? Te quedas como satisfecho a medias, sabiendo que lo mejor está por venir, supuestamente.. si te encantó la primera temporada, dale una chance! Échale un ojo, pero eso sí, bájale un poquito a las expectativas.. la segunda temporada es una continuación decente, pero sobre todo, es como un puente hacia lo que viene después.. ljalá que la tercera temporada sí nos entregue el final que esta historia se merece de verdad.. y bueno esto es todo por hoy, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense, byebye.
