Hello everyone, I hope you are doing great... this time I want to bring you all a new review, this time I want to share my opinions about the series: What If..? taking advantage that a few weeks ago it ended completely.. so I thought and decided to tell you a little about my roller coaster of emotions with this series. It's a series that when it premiered captured the attention of many people, but halfway through it forgot all its course and went out of what we expected and became something totally different.. this was a series that had so much potential and some episodes really delivered, with fresh ideas and memorable executions that left you thinking, but others felt rushed, uninspired and easy to forget, for those who don't know, this series consists of showing us events different from the main line that follows the Marvel Cinematic Universe, parallel universes.. the essence of the What If is to present us stories with changed things and see how everything develops because of that change... it's like those stories that we ourselves imagine totally random and the way to put that together with the idea of the multiverse is interesting in itself, but I think it still lacked a lot of development.
The standout episodes struck a perfect balance between creativity and emotional depth, like the wicked Doctor Strange episode, while the less successful ones seemed to rely on recycled stretches and weightless, dull, and pointless narratives. Let's start with the good, I thought the first season was excellent, it had this cool anthology vibe where each episode was a standalone story... my favorite without a doubt was the Doctor Strange Supreme episode, it's an episode that went straight to my heart.. the way it explored grief, loss and the dark side of Strange's character was pure genius, it wasn't just about flashy visuals or mindless fanservice, it really had depth and made me think: wow, this is what this series is going to bring... it's going to be amazing. Honestly, if every episode was like this, we'd be talking about What If being one of Marvel's best series.
Hola a todos, espero que estén súper bien.. en esta ocasión quiero traerles a todos ustedes una nueva reseña, esta vez quiero compartir mis opiniones sobre la serie: What If..?, aprovechando que hace unas semanas terminó por completo..por lo que pensé y decidí contarles un poco sobre mi montaña rusa de emociones con esta serie. Es una serie que al momento de estrenarse captó la atención de muchas personas, pero a mitad de camino olvidó todo su rumbo y se salió de lo que esperábamos y se convirtió en algo totalmente distinto.. esta era una serie que tenía tanto potencial y algunos episodios realmente cumplieron, con ideas frescas y ejecuciones memorables que te dejaban pensando, pero otros se sintieron apresurados, poco inspirados y fáciles de olvidar, para el que no lo sepa, esta serie consiste en mostrarnos acontecimientos diferentes a la línea principal que sigue el universo cinematográfico de Marvel, universos paralelos.. la esencia de los What If es presentarnos historias con cosas cambiadas y ver cómo se desarrolla todo por dicho cambio.. es como esas historias que nosotros mismos nos imaginamos totalmente aleatorias y la manera de juntar eso con la idea del multiverso de por sí es interesante, pero creo que aún le faltó mucho desarrollo.
Los episodios destacados lograban un equilibrio perfecto entre creatividad y profundidad emocional, como el episodio de Doctor Strange malvado, mientras que los menos logrados parecían depender de tramos reciclados y narrativas sin peso, aburridas y sin sentido.. Comencemos con lo bueno, la primera temporada me pareció excelente, tenía este ambiente antológico genial donde cada episodio era una historia independiente.. mi favorito sin duda fue el episodio de Doctor Strange Supreme, es un episodio que me llegó directo al corazón.. la forma en la que exploró el duelo, la pérdida y el lado oscuro del personaje de Strange fue pura genialidad, no se trataba solo de visuales llamativos o fanservice sin sentido, sino que realmente tenía profundidad y me hizo pensar: wow, esto es lo que esta serie va a traer? será increíble. Honestamente, si todos los episodios fueran sido así, estaríamos hablando de que What If sería una de las mejores series de Marvel.
But then, as the series progressed, it seemed like it didn't know what it wanted to do. was it an anthology? a connected narrative? both? neither? if they had leaned more towards a fully anthology format, it could have offered much deeper and more satisfying standalone stories, without the need to force connections, on the other hand, a connected, solid narrative would have allowed longer and more emotional arcs to develop, giving weight to the actions and consequences.. in trying to do both, the series ended up feeling indecisive and, at times, shallow.
The end of the first season tried to tie everything together, and I'll admit, it was fun to see all the characters working together.. but after that, the series started to lose all its charm, the second season leaned more towards the idea of a whole connected universe, and although it worked at first it wasn't the same, you could already see the decline, by the third season it just felt like a disaster.. some episodes really stood out, mind you, the concept of a Blade Runner style universe, with Nebula as the main character, brilliant. the execution? Well, not so much... the episode tried to be dark and gloomy, but ended up feeling empty... and let's not even talk about the repetitive plots. how many times can you kill Thanos before it stops being shocking? Spoiler: it stopped being shocking the second time. And the destruction of Earth is like it's on a checklist, every so often it happens... you always see something so typical coming, to some extent, that it feels like you're watching almost the same thing again, just with small changes, instead of crazier changes.
This makes the audience stop being interested.. and just, speaking of the audience, one of the biggest problems was the lack of emotional connection to the characters.. when you deal with multiverses where characters can die and reappear in the next chapter, it's hard to care, to increase the emotional impact, they could have limited the reappearances of characters or shown more dubious consequences to their actions, even if those consequences would only affect one particular universe. This would have helped each story feel more meaningful and less throwaway.. but on the contrary, I feel like there's no weight to anything at all, except in the last two episodes of each season. I mean, why should I care about a character's arc if I know they're just going to show up again in another universe, or worse, they're going to show up yes or yes in the end? I already know what's going to happen, I already know he's not going to die, or if he does die, somehow he's going to come back, even if it's in another universe... you lose that sense of connection, because it's not that they used different characters, but sometimes they used the same ones... it's fun to a point, but eventually you lose interest.
Pero luego, a medida que avanzaba la serie, parecía que no sabía lo que quería hacer. ¿Era una antología? ¿Una narrativa conectada? ¿Ambas? ¿Ninguna? si se hubieran inclinado más hacia un formato completamente antológico, podría haber ofrecido historias independientes mucho más profundas y satisfactorias, sin la necesidad de forzar conexiones, por otro lado, una narrativa conectada, sólida, habría permitido desarrollar arcos más largos y emocionales, dando peso a las acciones y consecuencias.. al intentar hacer ambas cosas, la serie terminó sintiéndose indecisa y, a veces, superficial.
El final de la primera temporada intentó unir todo, y lo admitiré, fue divertido ver a todos los personajes trabajando juntos.. pero después de eso, la serie comenzó a perder todo su encanto, la segunda temporada se inclinó más hacia la idea de todo un universo conectado, y aunque al principio funcionó no fue lo mismo, ya se veía el declive, para la tercera temporada simplemente se sintió como un desastre.. algunos episodios realmente destacaron, eso sí, el concepto de un universo estilo Blade Runner, con Nebula como protagonista, brillante. ¿La ejecución? Pues, no tanto.. el episodio intentó ser oscuro y sombrío, pero terminó sintiéndose vacío.. y ni hablemos de las tramas repetitivas. ¿Cuántas veces puedes matar a Thanos antes de que deje de ser impactante? Spoiler: dejó de ser impactante la segunda vez. Y la destrucción de la Tierra es como si estuviera en una lista de verificación, cada cierto tiempo pasa.. siempre ves venir algo tan típico, hasta cierto punto, que se siente como que estás viendo casi lo mismo otra vez, solo con pequeños cambios, en vez de cambios más locos.
Esto hace que la audiencia deje de estar interesada.. y justamente, hablando de la audiencia, uno de los mayores problemas fue la falta de conexión emocional con los personajes.. cuando tratas con multiversos donde los personajes pueden morir y volver a aparecer en el próximo capítulo, es difícil que te importe, para aumentar el impacto emocional, podrían haber limitado las reapariciones de personajes o mostrado consecuencias más duraderas en sus acciones, incluso si esas consecuencias solo afectarían a un universo en particular. Esto hubiera ayudado a que cada historia se sintiera más significativa y menos descartable.. pero al contrario, siento que no hay peso en nada de nada, salvo en los últimos dos episodios de cada temporada. Es decir, ¿por qué debería importarme el arco de un personaje si sé que simplemente aparecerá de nuevo en otro universo, o algo peor, va a aparecer sí o si al final? Ya sé lo que va a pasar, ya sé que no va a morir, o si muere, de alguna manera va a regresar, así sea en otro universo.. se pierde ese sentido de conexión, porque no es que usaran diferentes personajes, sino que algunas veces usaban los mismos.. es divertido hasta cierto punto, pero eventualmente pierdes el interés.
Now, as I was saying, it wasn't all horrible... the series had some great moments of creativity, the idea of giving Hela a redemption arc, surprisingly well done, gave her depth and explored her complicated relationship with Odin.. and the aftermath and action sequences, some were visually stunning. . mentioned earlier Nebula's world, where everything goes a bit cyberpunk, and the neon-lit cityscapes were feast for the eyes... it was an episode I also really enjoyed, even if the storytelling aspect wasn't the best. And that's a problem with almost everything, the story fell short in most episodes, and by the end I was left wondering what the point of it all was.. among other frustrating things, was the rushed pacing, major conflicts were resolved in minutes.. a villain defeated, boom, done, a character redeemed, snap, over.. it's like they tried to cram a whole movie into 24 minutes, and it just didn't work.
An example of this is the episode where Ego takes control of the universe.. that could have been a multi-episode epic arc, instead, it was rushed and the emotional moments had no impact at all, same happened with the zombie episode.. they are such good concepts that deserved to last at least 3 or maybe 4 episodes, to explode in the best possible way, but no, none of that happened, and it was only resolved in one episode. And we also have to mention the inconsistencies of some characters.. as they appeared superficial imitations of their MCU counterparts, it's like they have the name and the face, but none of the essence, some behave weird, different.. it doesn't feel organic. Captain Carter, for example, was supposed to be this central figure of the whole series, but a lot of times her appearances and her victories felt forced.. she's cool and all, but the series kept pushing her as this key heroine, and it just didn't click for me.
Ahora, como les decía, no todo fue horrible.. la serie tuvo momentos de creatividad muy buenos, la idea de darle un arco de redención a Hela, sorprendentemente bien hecho, le dio profundidad y exploró su complicada relación con Odín.. y las consecuencias y las secuencias de acción, algunas fueron visualmente impresionantes.. mencionaba anteriormente el mundo de Nebula, donde todo se vuelve algo cyberpunk, y los paisajes urbanos iluminados con neón fueron festín para los ojos.. fue un episodio que también disfruté mucho, aun cuando el aspecto narrativo no era el mejor. Y es que ese es un problema de casi todo, la historia se quedó corta en la mayoría de los episodios, y al final me quedé preguntándome cuál era el punto de todo.. entre otras cosas frustrantes, fue el ritmo apresurado, los conflictos importantes se resolvían en minutos.. un villano derrotado, boom, listo, un personaje redimido, snap, terminado.. es como si intentaran meter una película completa en 24 minutos, y simplemente no funcionó.
Un ejemplo de esto es el episodio donde Ego toma el control del universo.. eso podría haber sido un arco épico de varios episodios, en cambio, fue apresurado y los momentos emocionales no tuvieron nada de impacto, al igual pasó con el episodio de zombies.. son conceptos tan buenos que merecían durar por lo menos 3 o tal vez 4 episodios, para explotar de la mejor manera posible, pero no, nada de eso pasó, y se resolvió solamente en un episodio. Y también hay que mencionar las inconsistencias de algunos personajes.. ya que aparecían imitaciones superficiales de sus contrapartes del MCU, es como si tuvieran el nombre y la cara, pero nada de la esencia, algunos se comportan raro, diferente.. no se siente orgánico. Captain Carter, por ejemplo, se suponía que era esta figura central de toda la serie, pero muchas veces sus apariciones y sus victorias se sintieron forzadas.. es genial y todo, pero la serie seguía empujándola como esta heroína clave, y simplemente a mí no me convenció.
The multiverse concept I feel like was a double-edged sword, on one hand it allowed for some really creative ideas, but on the other it diluted everything that could have been amazing. When you're dealing with infinite universes, nothing really matters. Characters are going to reappear at some point, and even though universes can be destroyed, you never really care about them that much. You haven't shared much with them, and in the end, it just feels pointless. Still, there’s a part of me that still loves the idea of What If, that idea of exploring alternate realities, darker sides of characters, and scenarios we’d never see in the original cinematic universe sounds really interesting, it really could be really interesting… the problem is, the execution didn’t live up to the potential at all…
The show often felt like it was playing it safe, repeating familiar patterns instead of taking real risks, and overall, it’s sad to know that there were episodes that never came to fruition… you can find them online if you want, also in the last episode we’re given little hints of story concepts that could have been great, but in the end I didn’t understand why they never got the green light. They always preferred to go for things that didn’t quite convince... I give this series a 6/10 rating... the first season alone can easily get an 8, because I really feel that it had heart and creativity, but the later seasons dragged it down, because they were too formulaic, too repetitive, and too disconnected from the emotional core that made the best episodes shine.
Would I recommend it? Well, if you’re a Marvel fan, well I guess, there are moments that are really worth it... and the animation is consistent, so it’s not horrible at all. But if you’re a person who looks for a solid narrative and meaningful character arcs, this might not be what you expect... honestly, it’s a little disappointing to see how they had the chance to achieve something really good and unique, and they completely blew it... and well, I wanted to vent a little about this topic that was What If. El concepto del multiverso siento que fue un arma de doble filo, por un lado permitió algunas ideas realmente creativas, pero por otro diluyó todo lo que pudo haber sido increíble. Cuando tratamos con universos infinitos, nada realmente importa.. los personajes en algún punto van a volver a aparecer, y aunque los universos puedan ser destruidos, nunca terminan de importarte tanto.. no has compartido mucho con ellos, y al final, se siente como algo sin mucho sentido. Aun así, hay una parte de mí que aún ama la idea de What If, esa idea de explorar realidades alternativas, lados más oscuros de los personajes, y escenarios que nunca veríamos en el universo cinematográfico original, suena muy interesante, en verdad puede ser muy interesante.. el problema es que la ejecución no estuvo para nada a la altura del potencial..
La serie a menudo se sintió como si estuviera jugando siempre a lo seguro, repitiendo patrones familiares en lugar de arriesgarse de verdad, y sobre todo, es triste saber que hubo episodios que nunca llegaron a concretarse.. pueden encontrarlos en internet si desean, también en el último episodio se nos dan pequeñas pistas de conceptos de historias que pudieron ser geniales, pero al final no entendí por qué nunca le dieron luz verde. Prefirieron siempre irse a cosas que no terminaban de convencer.. yo le doy una calificación a esta serie de un 6/10.. la primera temporada por sí sola puede obtener fácilmente un 8, porque realmente siento que tenía corazón y creatividad, pero las temporadas posteriores la arrastraron hacia abajo, porque estuvieron demasiado formulaicas, demasiado repetitivas, y demasiado desconectadas del núcleo emocional que hizo brillar a los mejores episodios.
¿La recomendaría? Pues, si eres un fanático de Marvel, pues supongo, hay momentos que realmente valen la pena.. y la animación es consistente, así que no es nada horrible. Pero si eres una persona que busca una narrativa sólida y arcos de personajes significativos, esto no podría ser lo que esperas.. honestamente, es un poco decepcionante ver como tuvieron la oportunidad de lograr algo realmente bueno y único, y la desperdiciaron por completo.. y bueno, quería desahogarme un poco sobre este tema que fue What If. STOPI knew about the What If...? comic books, but I had no idea they finally decided to turn some of those into animations. Sounds like a great idea on paper, but I can imagine that they might cheapen out on the animation side of things.
Most of them are inspired by the UCM, I wish there were many more direct from the comics....
En el momento de que se estreno, hubo tanto comentarios de la misma, que ya contaban las historias y perdí el interés de lograr verla, a pesar de que soy el tipo de persona que, aunque hablen de ello y den spoiler, prefiero verla y dar mi opinión, pero no sé por qué no logró captar mi atención, ahora con tu reseña, no se me hace muy llamativa, aun así me gustó leerla porque dejaste claro los puntos en donde fallo.
