Después de Prometheus y Alien Covenant viene la historia de Alien Romulus a mostrarnos sobre personas atrapadas en el espacio con máquinas de matar perfectas, la franquicia ha tenido un camino difícil y con Romulus me pareció que no se arriesgaron mucho, la historia es bastante familiar y no traspasa mucho los límites. Esta parte ocurre entre los acontecimientos de Alien y Aliens, y cuenta con Rain Carradine y Andy un androide defectuoso al que ella llama su hermano, atrapados trabajando en una miserable colonia minera dirigida por la mejor corporación malvada, Weyland Yutani, Rain se vio obligada a firmar un nuevo contrato y está retenida contra su voluntad en este agujero infernal, luego acepta a regañadientes cuando su exnovio Tyler le ofrece un arriesgado plan de fuga, asaltar una estación espacial abandonada en busca de cápsulas criogénicas.
La embarazada Kay, la piloto Navarro y Bjorn conducen a la tripulación a lo que creen que es una nave fuera de servicio, pero que resulta ser una enorme estación espacial que está en rumbo de colisión con un cinturón de asteroides. Descubren que dentro de la estación estaban haciendo experimentos con facehuggers, y almacenados en un sistema de contención cuestionable que falla rápidamente, mientras buscan suministros, un facehugger se pega a Navarro y ocurre lo inevitable, la tripulación debe luchar por sus vidas contra un Xenomorfo y la lealtad de Andy cambia cuando recibe una actualización de programación. El tiempo se acaba, la órbita de la estación se está deteriorando y Rain debe escapar con sus amigos mientras descubre la siniestra investigación que se está llevando a bordo.
Cailee Spaeny y David Jonsson son el centro de la película, y sus actuaciones son muy buenas, Spaeny hace el papel de Rain mostrando que está acostumbrada a hacer las cosas en situaciones difíciles y Jonsson se roba muchas escenas como Andy, muestra cómo un androide dividido entre lo programado y lo real tiene un conflicto interno, lo que me gusta es que su personaje evoluciona a lo largo de la película una vez que Andy recibe una actualización en la estación y Jonsson hace un cambio sin que tengamos que dudar de si podemos confiar en él. El resto de los actores hace bien sus papeles aunque no se desarrollan en la misma medida antes de convertirse en víctimas de la xenomorfa. Kay es la que más sobresale y su embarazo le da más tensión antes de entrar en juego en el momento más impactante de la película.
El diseño de producción de Alien Romulus es bueno además regresa con la historia de la casa encantada en el espacio que fue tan potente en el original y todo se siente como que si está conectado con la primera película, hay bastante tensión sobre todo con las escenas de persecución en el pasillo de los facehuggers aunque a veces me dio la impresión de que Romulus se lo toma demasiado a la ligera repitiendo la película original y no intenta sobresalir y me hubiese gustado que la película se arriesgara más en lugar de guardárselo todo para los últimos quince minutos, algo que no me gustó es que hay muchas preguntas lógicas a la que la película no da respuesta como por ejemplo ¿por qué Weyland Yutani abandona una estación de investigación tan importante con tan poca seguridad? ¿Cómo se reproducían los facehuggers en tantos? ¿Por qué parece acelerado el ciclo de vida del xenomorfo con respecto a la película original? Eso hacía que me distrajera y no pudiera involucrarme bien en lo que estaba ocurriendo.
Al final de Alien Romulus hay bastante horror corporal y da cierta vinculación con la mitología de Prometheus, después de que la estación es destruida y Rain, Andy y Kay logran escapar y prepararse para su viaje criogénico de nueve años, el embarazo de Kay sale terriblemente mal, el compuesto que se inyectó acelera su embarazo, y cuando sale la cápsula que lleva es una cápsula extraña con lo que parece un bebé humano dentro, rápidamente esto se convierte en un monstruo humanoide imponente que mata a Kay y casi se lleva a Rain también. Esta criatura es un nuevo desarrollo del xenomorfo, que fusiona ADN humano y alienígena de una manera que juega con los temas de Prometheus y Alien Resurrection. En la bodega de carga Rain desconecta la sección en la que se encuentra la criatura y esta se estrella contra el campo de asteroides, termina con Rain pronunciando un monólogo al estilo de Ripley, habiendo perdido a todos pero decidida a sobrevivir, este final encaja con la tradición de la franquicia de horror corporal aunque pasa algo rápido después del ritmo tranquilo del resto de la película.
Ese híbrido humano alienígena aparece tan de repente que parece estar en otra película, aunque ofrece un final memorable, aunque soy fan de Alien me he sentido decepcionada por las últimas entregas, en mi opinión Romulus es una película que aunque tenga defectos nos devuelve a la razón del por qué esta franquicia ha durado más de cuatro décadas, es incorporación a la saga xenomorfa y me deja con curiosidad por saber hacia dónde podría dirigirse la serie, yo le doy un 7/10.

After Prometheus and Alien Covenant comes the story of Alien Romulus to show us about people trapped in space with perfect killing machines. The franchise has had a difficult road and with Romulus it seemed to me that they didn't take many risks. The story is quite familiar and doesn't push the boundaries much. This part takes place between the events of Alien and Aliens, and features Rain Carradine and Andy, a defective android she calls her brother, trapped working in a miserable mining colony run by the ultimate evil corporation, Weyland Yutani. Rain was forced to sign a new contract and is being held against her will in this hellhole, then reluctantly agrees when her ex-boyfriend Tyler offers her a risky escape plan, to raid an abandoned space station in search of cryogenic capsules.
The pregnant Kay, the pilot Navarro and Bjorn lead the crew to what they believe to be a decommissioned ship, but it turns out to be a huge space station that is on a collision course with an asteroid belt. They discover that experiments with facehuggers were being carried out inside the station, and stored in a questionable containment system that quickly fails. While searching for supplies, a facehugger attaches itself to Navarro and the inevitable happens: the crew must fight for their lives against a xenomorph and Andy's loyalty changes when he receives a programming update. Time is running out, the station's orbit is deteriorating and Rain must escape with her friends as she discovers the sinister research being carried out on board.
Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are at the center of the film, and their performances are very good, Spaeny plays the role of Rain showing that she is used to getting things done in difficult situations and Jonsson steals many scenes as Andy, shows how an android torn between what is programmed and what is real has an internal conflict. What I like is that his character evolves throughout the film once Andy receives an update at the station and Jonsson makes a change without us having to doubt whether we can trust him. The rest of the actors do their roles well although they do not develop to the same extent before becoming victims of the xenomorph. Kay stands out the most and her pregnancy adds tension before she comes into play at the most shocking moment of the film.
The production design of Alien: Romulus is good and it also returns to the story of the haunted house in space that was so powerful in the original and everything feels as if it is connected to the first film, there is a lot of tension, especially with the chase scenes in the facehugger corridor, although at times I got the impression that Romulus takes it too lightly by repeating the original film and doesn't try to stand out, and I would have liked the film to take more risks instead of saving everything for the last fifteen minutes, something I didn't like is that there are many logical questions to which the film doesn't provide answers, such as why did Weyland Yutani abandon such an important research station with so little security? How did the facehuggers reproduce in such numbers? Why does the xenomorph's life cycle seem accelerated compared to the original film? This distracted me and meant I couldn't get properly involved in what was happening.
At the end of Alien Romulus there is a lot of bodily horror and it has some connection with the mythology of Prometheus, after the station is destroyed and Rain, Andy and Kay manage to escape and prepare for their nine-year cryogenic journey, Kay's pregnancy goes terribly wrong, the compound she injected herself with accelerates her pregnancy, and when the capsule she is carrying comes out it is a strange capsule with what appears to be a human baby inside, this quickly turns into an imposing humanoid monster that kills Kay and almost takes Rain too. This creature is a new development of the xenomorph, fusing human and alien DNA in a way that plays on the themes of Prometheus and Alien Resurrection. In the cargo hold Rain disconnects the section where the creature is located and it crashes into the asteroid field, ending with Rain delivering a Ripley-style monologue, having lost everyone but determined to survive, this ending fits in with the tradition of the body horror franchise although it happens a bit too quickly after the calm pace of the rest of the film.
That alien-human hybrid appears so suddenly that it seems to be in another movie, although it offers a memorable ending. Although I'm a fan of Alien, I've been disappointed by the latest installments. In my opinion, Romulus is a movie that, although it has its flaws, brings us back to the reason why this franchise has lasted more than four decades. it is a new addition to the xenomorph saga and leaves me curious to know where the series could go next, I give it a 7/10.
