Estos días que pasaron los aproveché para acostarme a ver películas el tiempo que podía por supuesto jajaja y también comencé a ver una serie que más adelante les hablaré de ella. Una de las pelis que vi que me gustó bastante fue Im Still Here, es de un director brasilero Walter Salles la verdad no recuerdo haber visto alguna otra película de él pero esta es muy buena y trata sobre la dictadura militar que le tocó vivir a Brasil durante los 60 y 80. No conozco mucho la historia de Brasil pero por supuesto que me conmovió la película porque digamos que es algo parecido a lo que se vive acá o que vivieron mis abuelos que en paz descansen hace muchos años atrás con otras dos dictaduras, me hizo pensar que esto es como un ciclo, las naciones siempre están pasando por situaciones difíciles.
IM Still Here está basada en las memorias de Marcelo Rubens Paiva el es productor de esta película y es el hijo de Rubens Paiva y narra como un régimen opresivo perjudica la vida de una familia cuando se llevan a su padre para no verlo jamás, esta historia me conmovió mucho porque es ver una familia desmembrada por culpa de la violencia del Estado, situación que le ha tocado pasar a varias familias en varias partes del mundo. Cuando yo estaba pequeña recuerdo que mi abuela me contaba algunas cosas sobre como ella y su familia sufrieron con la dictadura de Gómez y esta película me hizo recordar a esa opresión política, claro no es que hoy día sea muy diferente. La película se centra en la pérdida y la resistencia del ser humano, lo que me gustó es que se toma su tiempo para mostrar como era la vida de esa familia antes de la tragedia que tuvieron que pasar, aunque para algunos quizás el ritmo de la película pueda ser lento y fastidioso, solo hay que entender que esto es importante para crear todo el impacto emocional y hacer una conexión con los personajes.
Para mí Im Still Here no es un drama político, es una historia profunda y personal sobre la fortaleza de una madre ante una pérdida que nunca se imaginó y sobre cómo una familia puede sobrevivir incluso cuando le quitan violentamente una pieza importante. La historia ocurre en Río de Janeiro a ellos años después les toca mudarse por lo ocurrido, aparece la familia Paiva que ahora que recuerdo ese era el apellido del traumatólogo a la que mi mamá nos llevaba de pequeña a mi hermana y a mí no me parece que sea un apellido tan común acá en mi país, en fin esta familia vive tranquila en una tremenda casa y su vida es feliz cuando Rubens Paiva un antiguo diputado que había estado fuera de Brasil por el golpe de estado regresa pero empieza a ayudar en secreto a los exiliados políticos. Su esposa se llama Eunice y tienen cinco hijos, toda esta vida feliz se ve interrumpida cuando el régimen empieza con su control y unos hombres armados llegan a su casa y se llevan a Rubens para supuestamente interrogarlo y pasan los días sin que se sepa nada de él, después le hacen lo mismo a Eunice y a una de sus hijas, después de pasar unos días detenidas en la que escucha gritos de tortura y sufre ataques psicológicos la dejan libre pero no sabe nada de su esposo y los militares niegan haberlo detenido. Esta mujer empieza una búsqueda desesperada al mismo tiempo que intenta proteger a sus hijos y mantener una vida normal, tanto así que se convierte en una activista política.
La actriz Fernanda Torres que hace de Eunice Paiva hace una gran actuación, es una mujer que su vida cambia de la noche a la mañana y tiene que encontrar la fuerza para seguir adelante por el bien de sus hijos. Lo que hace que su papel sea más realista es la forma como equilibra la perdida con la transformación de una mujer en acción, algo que las madres sabemos hacer muy bien porque no podemos quedarnos de brazos cruzados y debemos sacar a nuestros hijos adelante. Aparte de la actuación de Torres una de las cosas que más me gustó de Im Still Here es la manera como evita ser un drama político común y se enfoca en el sufrimiento humano por causa de la opresión, no se muestran escenas de tortura ni mensajes políticos, el terror del régimen se transmite a través de la búsqueda desesperada de información por parte de Eunice y de la incertidumbre que lleva a un desgaste psicológico. La estructura de la película que sigue a la familia durante décadas permite ver las consecuencias inmediatas de la desaparición de Rubens, la oscuridad que tuvieron que pasar además de la resistencia de esta familia ante tanto dolor.
El final de Im Still Here no es nada fácil, esta familia tuvo que seguir adelante y Eunice tuvo que transformar su dolor y accionar, se tuvieron que mudar a Sao Paulo y ella volvió a la universidad a los 48 años para estudiar Derecho y se convirtió en defensora de los derechos humanos y de los pueblos indígenas, al tiempo que seguía luchando por el reconocimiento oficial de lo ocurrido a su esposo y a otras personas desaparecidas, yo le doy a esta película un 8.5/10 porque muestra una historia personal profunda que no solo habla de Brasil sino de la capacidad del ser humano de resistir ante tanta injusticia, y la actuación de Fernanda Torres es extraordinaria. Me gustó la escena final donde muestran a la familia Paiva reunida y aunque el régimen intentó borrar a Rubens Paiva su legado sigue vivo. Para mí esta película es un recordatorio de que aunque tengamos que lidiar con regímenes autoritarios el coraje y la determinación nos ayudan a mantenernos de pie.

I took advantage of these days to go to bed and watch movies for as long as I could of course hahaha and I also started to watch a series that I will tell you about later. One of the movies I saw that I liked a lot was Im Still Here, it's by a Brazilian director Walter Salles, I don't really remember having seen any other movie by him but this one is very good and it's about the military dictatorship that Brazil lived during the 60's and 80's. I don't know much about Brazil's history but of course I know a lot about the history of Brazil but of course it's a very good movie. I don't know much about the history of Brazil but of course I was moved by the movie because let's say it's something similar to what my grandparents lived through here or what my grandparents lived through many years ago with two other dictatorships, it made me think that this is like a cycle, nations are always going through difficult situations.
IM Still Here is based on the memoirs of Marcelo Rubens Paiva who is the producer of this film and is the son of Rubens Paiva and tells how an oppressive regime harms the life of a family when they take his father to never see him again, this story moved me a lot because it is to see a family dismembered by the violence of the State, a situation that has happened to several families in various parts of the world. When I was little I remember my grandmother telling me some things about how she and her family suffered under the Gomez dictatorship and this film reminded me of that political oppression, not that it is very different today. The film focuses on the loss and resilience of the human being, what I liked is that it takes its time to show what life was like for that family before the tragedy they had to go through, although for some maybe the pace of the film can be slow and tiresome, you just have to understand that this is important to create all the emotional impact and make a connection with the characters.
For me Im Still Here is not a political drama, it is a deep and personal story about a mother's strength in the face of a loss she never imagined and how a family can survive even when an important piece is violently taken away. The story takes place in Rio de Janeiro and years later they have to move because of what happened, the Paiva family appears, now that I remember that was the last name of the traumatologist to whom my mother took my sister and me when we were little, it does not seem to me that it is such a common name here in my country, anyway this family lives quietly in a tremendous house and their life is happy when Rubens Paiva a former deputy who had been out of Brazil because of the coup returns but begins to secretly help the political exiles. His wife's name is Eunice and they have five children, all this happy life is interrupted when the regime begins its control and some armed men come to their house and take Rubens to supposedly interrogate him and days go by without knowing anything about him, then they do the same to Eunice and one of her daughters, after spending a few days in detention in which she hears screams of torture and suffers psychological attacks she is released but knows nothing about her husband and the military denies having arrested him. This woman begins a desperate search while trying to protect her children and maintain a normal life, so much so that she becomes a political activist.
Actress Fernanda Torres who plays Eunice Paiva gives a great performance, she is a woman whose life changes overnight and she has to find the strength to move forward for the sake of her children. What makes her role more realistic is the way she balances the loss with the transformation of a woman in action, something that we mothers know how to do very well because we cannot stand idly by and we must move our children forward. Aside from Torres' performance one of the things I liked most about Im Still Here is the way it avoids being a common political drama and focuses on human suffering due to oppression, no scenes of torture or political messages are shown, the terror of the regime is conveyed through Eunice's desperate search for information and the uncertainty that leads to psychological exhaustion. The structure of the film that follows the family over decades allows us to see the immediate aftermath of Rubens' disappearance, the darkness they had to go through as well as the resilience of this family in the face of so much pain.
The ending of Im Still Here is not easy at all, this family had to move on and Eunice had to transform their pain and actions, they had to move to Sao Paulo and she went back to college at 48 to study law and became an advocate for human rights and indigenous people, while still fighting for official recognition of what happened to her husband and other disappeared people, I give this film an 8. 5/10 because it shows a deep personal story that not only talks about Brazil but also about the capacity of human beings to resist in the face of so much injustice, and Fernanda Torres' performance is extraordinary. I liked the final scene where they show the Paiva family reunited and although the regime tried to erase Rubens Paiva his legacy lives on. For me this film is a reminder that even though we have to deal with authoritarian regimes courage and determination help us to stand up.
