I usually don't watch many Korean or Asian movies, to be more precise. I don't usually like the narrative, or sometimes, due to the language, they don't completely captivate me. I know this might make me miss out on good films, so every now and then, I give a movie a chance to surprise me. I have to say that I really liked this one. It's good, and I recommend it.
Officer Black Belt is a South Korean action-comedy film released in 2024, directed by Jason Kim and starring Kim Woo-bin as Lee Jung-do. The story follows Jung-do, a young man skilled in several martial arts, who by coincidence, comes across an officer being attacked. The boy, in his desire to defend the officer, ends up getting involved in the fight and subdues the attacker. After showing that he could be a good addition, the boy is invited to temporarily join a team that deals with individuals on parole. The boy joins as a "martial arts officer," and together with a parole officer, they must handle individuals who have mostly committed sexual crimes or similar offenses. Their job is to monitor and prevent these individuals from violating parole by following the GPS signal emitted by the device attached to the criminals' ankles.
The movie maintains a perfect balance between action and comedy. It must be said that the action scenes are very well done, and for some reason, they reminded me of John Wick. The choreography in the action scenes is well executed, making the actor stand out while adding the dynamism and energy expected from this type of film. It’s true that the movie follows predictable patterns; nothing will really surprise you. The action sequences lead up to the resolution, but the movie manages to entertain and convey a message that goes beyond just protection and justice for the most vulnerable.
From my point of view, Officer Black Belt is a film that is primarily enjoyed for its ability to entertain without too much pretense. It’s an action movie that doesn't try to be more than that, and it works very well for what it is. The action is well done, really well executed, but what surprised me the most was how the movie addressed deeper and more serious themes, like child abuse. This was a pleasant surprise because typically, serious topics like this aren't touched upon in action-comedy films. However, this movie managed to introduce the subject of child abuse in the right way. Considering how sensitive this topic is, the film never trivializes it and addresses it in a serious and respectful manner.
As for the performances, I have to say the main character is very well portrayed. However, what detracts from the film are a couple of secondary characters, like Jung-do's friends. At times, it feels like they are unnecessary and don't quite fit into the movie, or at least that’s how I felt.
Officer Black Belt is a recommended movie for those who enjoy martial arts, well-executed action, and a bit of comedy. It won’t change the genre, but it will entertain you from start to finish. It's something light with a great message. An enjoyable piece of work.

El chico, en su deseo de defender al oficial, termina involucrándose en la pelea y sometiendo al agresor. Tras demostrar que podría ser un buen elemento, el chico es invitado a unirse temporalmente a un grupo que tiene que lidiar con sujetos que están bajo libertad condicional. El chico se une como "oficial de artes marciales", y junto a un oficial de libertad condicional, deben tratar con sujetos que, en su mayoría, han cometido crímenes sexuales y agresiones de ese tipo. Su labor es monitorear y prevenir que estos sujetos violen la libertad condicional, siguiendo la señal del GPS que emiten los dispositivos colocados en los tobillos de dichos delincuentes.
La película mantiene un perfecto equilibrio entre acción y comedia. Se debe decir que las escenas de acción están muy bien hechas, y por alguna razón, me recordaron a las de John Wick. La coreografía en las escenas de acción está bien lograda y hace destacar al actor, además de agregarle el dinamismo y la energía que se espera de este tipo de filmes. Es cierto que la película sigue patrones predecibles; no hay nada que te llegue a sorprender. Se van siguiendo las secuencias de acciones hasta llegar al desenlace. No obstante, la película logra entretener y transmitir un mensaje que va más allá de la protección y justicia para los más vulnerables.
Desde mi punto de vista, Officer Black Belt es una película que se disfruta principalmente por su capacidad para entretener sin demasiadas pretensiones. Es una película de acción que no pretende ser más que eso, y funciona muy bien en lo que es. Quiero decir que la acción está bien hecha, muy bien lograda, pero lo que más me sorprendió fue cómo la película abordó temas más profundos y serios, como el abuso infantil. La verdad es que fue una grata sorpresa, porque por lo general no se tocan temas tan serios en películas de acción y comedia. Sin embargo, esta logró introducir el abuso infantil en su justa medida. Siendo algo tan delicado, la película nunca lo trivializa y lo aborda de manera seria y respetuosa.
Respecto a las actuaciones, debo decir que el personaje principal está muy bien logrado. Sin embargo, lo que le resta a la película son un par de personajes secundarios, como los amigos de Jung-do. En parte de la película, se siente que están de más, no terminan de encajar del todo, o al menos así lo sentí yo.
Officer Black Belt es una película recomendable para aquellos que disfrutan de las artes marciales, la acción bien ejecutada y un poco de comedia. No va a cambiar el género, pero logrará entretener de principio a fin. Es algo ligero con un gran mensaje. Una obra agradable.
