Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is a realistic war movie set in Afghanistan. I quite liked it, to be honest I like this kind of movie as well as horror movies. The movie begins with Sergeant John Kinley and his team on patrol looking for explosives and weapons. From the beginning of the movie you can feel the suspense. the first scene that grabbed me was when the translator was blown up during a security sweep and then when the new interpreter arrived, an Afghan man is a somewhat different character, he doesn't just translate words but he interprets and realizes how much the difference between life and death can be. Kinley and Ahmed interact within the story as it progresses, at first it is a conflict between them but as they are threatened by the wars, you can see that respect grows, what I like about the film is that it shows how these two people from two totally different backgrounds begin to feel comfortable with each other.

La película comienza con el sargento John Kinley y su equipo patrullando en busca de explosivos y armas, desde el principio de la película se puede sentir el suspenso, la primera escena que me atrapó fue cuando el traductor explotó durante un barrido de seguridad y entonces al entrar el nuevo intérprete, un hombre afgano es un personaje algo diferente, no sólo traduce palabras sino que interpreta y se da cuenta de todo lo que puede ser la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte. Kinley y Ahmed interactúan dentro de la historia a medida que ésta avanza, al principio se trata de un conflicto entre ellos pero a medida que se ven amenazados por las guerras se nota que el respeto crece, lo que me gusta de la película es que muestra cómo estas dos personas de dos orígenes totalmente distintos empiezan a sentirse cómodos el uno con el otro.
The action is at its most intense when Kinley and Ahmed have to remain in the danger zone after the failure of a mission. The tone changes completely and it becomes a survival movie as Ahmed rescues Kinley and drags him tens of kilometers through hostile territory while being pursued by the Taliban. The film changes course when Kinley returns to the United States and although he is comfortable at home he feels guilty for having left Ahmed on the battlefield, there is a lot of bureaucracy involved in getting papers for Ahmed and his family and Kinley despairs and decides to return to Afghanistan alone to save Ahmed.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays the character of Kinley and is more than up to the task, he has that evil look in his eyes that gives you exactly what you want to know about what is going on in Kinley's mind, but the performance I liked the most was Dar Salim's as Ahmed, this guy draws a lot of attention, for example in one scene he is haggling with an informant and body language alone makes it clear that Ahmed has a lot of presence for this role. Kinley's wife, played by Emily Beecham, doesn't appear much on screen but she does it well.

La esposa de Kinley, interpretada por Emily Beecham, no aparece mucho en pantalla pero lo hace bien.
In my opinion The Covenant is not a normal war movie, it focuses on the loss of life in war and the friendship that develops between soldiers, it leaves a powerful message as well as addressing the issue of the Afghan interpreters who were left behind, it is an uncomfortable subject but the film does not hesitate to describe the anger and disappointment these people felt when the United States left Afghanistan. The film also presents a good picture of how war affects people during and after the war. In one scene Kinley appears to be returning home trying to rebuild his life and you can see that he is tortured by what happened in Afghanistan and I think this is something that must happen to many soldiers in real life. I also liked that it showed a serious problem that the United States has and that is the betrayal of Afghan interpreters, it doesn't give a speech about this but it does make you think about the lives that are lost because of political differences, the plot may seem a bit slow in some parts but I think that's what it wants to show, the desperation to survive.
En mi opinión The Covenant no es una película bélica normal, se centra en la pérdida de vidas en la guerra y en la amistad que surge entre los soldados, deja un mensaje poderoso además de que aborda el tema de los intérpretes afganos que quedaron atrás, es un tema incómodo pero la película no duda en describir la rabia y la decepción que sintieron estas personas cuando Estados Unidos abandonó Afganistán. La película también presenta una buena imagen de cómo la guerra afecta a la gente durante y después de la guerra, en una escena aparece Kinley de regreso a su casa intentando rehacer su vida y se ve que está torturado por lo que pasó en Afganistán y creo que esto es algo que debe pasarle a muchos soldados en la vida real, también me gustó que mostrara un problema grave que tiene Estados Unidos y es la traición a los interpretes afganos, no da un discurso sobre esto pero si hace pensar en las vidas que se pierden por las diferencias políticas, puede que su trama parezca un poco lenta en algunas partes pero creo que eso es lo que quiere mostrar el desespero por sobrevivir.
In the final scene Kinley returns to Afghanistan to rescue Ahmed and his family and time is running out with the Taliban in pursuit. What I liked is how the film doesn't present this as an attitude of American heroism, rather it shows the desperation and the danger and I think it's closer to the truth than the rest. Although the end of the film is a bit sad, on the one hand there is a moment of triumph when Kinley finally manages to get Ahmed and his family out but then there is a silent depression because you know that for every Ahmed who fled, many did not make it. There is also a final shot in which real American soldiers appear with their Afghan translators, some of them with their faces covered by a mask, it made me realize how terrible this is, that it is not just a work of fiction but that it happened to real people. The Covenant is a very complete war movie that is not just an action movie, it has many combat scenes but focuses more on the friendship and connection that develops in war, Ritchie's direction here is different from his other movies, he puts more emphasis on the drama, this movie makes you think a lot about war and the people involved in it. Score 8.1/10.
En la escena final Kinley regresa a Afganistán para rescatar a Ahmed y a su familia y el tiempo se acaba con los talibanes persiguiéndoles, lo que me gustó es cómo la película no presenta esto como una actitud de heroísmo americano, más bien muestra el desespero y el peligro y creo que está más cerca de la verdad que el resto. Aunque el final de la película es algo triste, por un lado hay un momento de triunfo cuando Kinley consigue por fin sacar a Ahmed y a su familia pero luego hay una depresión silenciosa porque sabes que por cada Ahmed que huyó, muchos no lo consiguieron. También hay una última toma en la que aparecen soldados estadounidenses reales con sus traductores afganos, algunos de ellos con la cara cubierta por una máscara, me hizo darme cuenta de lo terrible que es esto, que no es sólo una obra de ficción sino que le ocurrió a personas reales. The Covenant es una película de guerra muy completa que no es sólo una película de acción, tiene muchas escenas de combate pero se centra más en la amistad y conexión que se desarrolla en la guerra, la dirección de Ritchie aquí es diferente a sus otras películas hace más énfasis en el drama, esta película deja pensando mucho en la guerra y las personas involucradas en ella. Puntuación 8.1/10.

I was surprised to find out that Ritchie directed this because it is very different from what he would normally take on. I think he did a great job and the scenes, especially the big action one at the end on the bridge, are outstanding.
