There's something charming and comforting about a sitcom set in a convenience store. This is the place where all sorts of people come to shop. There's a certain appeal to it where it also exposes our everyday, mundane lives through the eyes of its owner, staff, and even customers. Perhaps that is what this series tries to convey.
I came to know Kim's Convenience Store a few years back, but it never appealed to me until the Netflix evil algorithm started harassing me with these recommendations. I suspect this happened because I enjoy watching all the other sitcoms and comedy shows. The series is based on a play by Ins Cho, who is also the director of this series and shares the same title. It spans five seasons, with each season having 13 episodes.
The stars are not the ones that you usually think of, but there's a familiar face: Simi Liu, who stars as the son of Kim's family. If you're Canadian, the rest of the actors, such as Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, might ring a bell.
Kim's Convenience Store is about the lives of Kim's family, who emigrated from South Korea to Canada; they run a shop and are blessed with two children, Jannet and Jun. Mr. Kim is a typical Asian man with various dad jokes, and Mrs. Kim is a typical ambitious tiger Asian mom with an intense devotion to her faith.
While some reports argued that the season wouldn't continue due to criticism of its lack of representation, I can understand where they are coming from. However, the main issue was that the director had also called quit and moved on to another project. Unfortunately, I wanted to see the ending and get more closure.
I love how the characters can feel so relatable, especially Janet, with her passion for creativity and ambitions. In many Asian communities, pursuing a creative career often lacks prestige. However, Kim's Convenience Store tries to show that there is nothing wrong with pursuing photography or the like. That message is sent through the characterization of Mr. Kim, who showed unwavering support for Janet.
While some fall asleep binge-watching Friends or How I Met Your Mother, this is my jam. It's heartbreaking to me that I've finished the entire season, and it ended hanging. But at least the ending got me teary, especially during the poignant dinner scene. Appa's Mr Kim's heartfelt speech was touching and resonated with me.
That being said, Kim's Convenience sitcoms are definitely for you if you enjoy family sitcoms. They're light-hearted and easy to binge-watch.

These types of productions are perfect for having a great moment of laughter and fun and what you are sharing with us sounds interesting and above all how they managed to put everything together, Netflix will always do its thing so that the productions come out of nowhere haha.

They didn't make any new series and stopped their season. It's really unfortunate.
This looks like a comedy type of movie, while the action is fun the lesson is deep
It's been ages since I watched a sitcom so I'm definitely adding this to my to-watch list. It seems really interesting but it's sad they had to leave it hanging. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation Mac, this will come in handy on one of those days where I just need something to lighten up my mood.
