Hi hivers 💖! Once again I join this new round of the contest promoted by OCD and this time it's our turn to participate through one of my favorite communities Movies & TV Shows. It took me a while to decide which of the three questions I would give an answer to and finally I chose:
🔹 Who are your favorite villains in movies or TV series and why?
Hola hivers 💖! Una vez más me sumo a esta nueva ronda del concurso promovido por OCD y en esta oportunidad nos toca participar a través de una de mis comunidades favoritas Movies & TV Shows. Me costó un poco decidir a cual de las tres preguntas le daría respuesta y finalmente escogí:
🔹 ¿Quiénes son tus villanos favoritos en películas o series de televisión y por qué?

What is a villain? Is it a bad person? Well… yes and no. Is it the antagonist of the story? Once again, yes and no. It is a little bit more complex than that, even though these are prerequisites for becoming a villain. Sometimes, the antagonist of the story is an anti-hero and that does not mean that that person is the villain. So, what constitutes the essence of this group of people? The villain of a plot is a person with a clear and established motive to act against the protagonist; an individual that embodies the anti-moral and that would not doubt doing anything in order to accomplish his/her goal. In other words, a villain is the me representation of the Machiavellian phrase “the end justifies the means”. A villain is even more necessary than a hero for a movie to work out because he tests the limits of the protagonist, challenges him, courts him in his tortuous game and balances his intentions in a perfect manner. Hollywood has been filled with legendary villains throughout the history of films, including Thanos, the Joker, Darth Vader, Lord Voldemort, Hannibal Lecter, Pennywise, Gollum… as a matter of fact, there would be no James Bond if it wasn’t for his villains. But, in my opinion, the best villain of all is the one that makes understand his intentions and empathize with him, and Jake Gyllenhaal is a master at this craft, even though he is a little bit underrated in this genre.
¿Qué es un villano? ¿Es una mala persona? Bueno... sí y no. ¿Es el antagonista de la historia? Una vez más, sí y no. Es un poco más complejo que eso, aunque estos sean los requisitos para convertirse en un villano. A veces, el antagonista de la historia es un antihéroe y eso no significa que esa persona sea el villano. Entonces, ¿qué constituye la esencia de este grupo de personas? El villano de una trama es una persona con un motivo claro y establecido para actuar contra el protagonista; un individuo que encarna la antimoral y que no dudaría en hacer cualquier cosa con tal de lograr su objetivo. En otras palabras, un villano es la representación de la frase maquiavélica "el fin justifica los medios". Un villano es incluso más necesario que un héroe para que una película funcione porque pone a prueba los límites del protagonista, lo desafía, lo corteja en su tortuoso juego y equilibra sus intenciones de manera perfecta. Hollywood se ha llenado de villanos legendarios a lo largo de la historia del cine, como Thanos, el Joker, Darth Vader, Lord Voldemort, Hannibal Lecter, Pennywise, Gollum... de hecho, no existiría James Bond si no fuera por sus villanos. Pero, en mi opinión, el mejor villano de todos es el que hace entender sus intenciones y empatizar con él, y Jake Gyllenhaal es un maestro en este oficio, aunque esté un poco infravalorado en este género.

In the movie “Enemy”, Jake Gyllenhaal plays two characters who are…well, you have guessed it… who are the same person. He plays the two sides of his subconscious: one is a very taciturn and passive person and the other is the villainous side of this character, a very rebel individual who tries to corrupt his other side. Even though, this Denis Villeneuve’s film is not so famous and did not resonate as much as it should have, I profusely admire what Jake Gyllenhaal’s character did with his bad persona. He was determined in destroying the mind of his other half and they were the same person! The reason why I think he is one of the best villains of all time is because he represents what our mind can do to undermine us, to punish us in unfair ways, to let us know that we have no value, when, in fact, we do. It is an analogy of depression, but always remember that we are more powerful than what society dictates.
En la película "Enemy", Jake Gyllenhaal interpreta a dos personajes que son... bueno, lo has adivinado... que son la misma persona. Interpreta los dos lados de su subconsciente: uno es una persona muy taciturna y pasiva y el otro es el lado villano de este personaje, un individuo muy rebelde que intenta corromper su otro lado. Aunque, esta película de Denis Villeneuve no es tan famosa y no resonó tanto como debería, admiro profusamente lo que hizo el personaje de Jake Gyllenhaal con su mala persona. Se empeñó en destruir la mente de su otra mitad y ¡eran la misma persona! La razón por la que creo que es uno de los mejores villanos de todos los tiempos es porque representa lo que nuestra mente puede hacer para socavarnos, para castigarnos de forma injusta, para hacernos saber que no tenemos valor, cuando, en realidad, lo tenemos. Es una analogía de la depresión, pero recuerda siempre que somos más poderosos que lo que dicta la sociedad.

Another great role of Jake Gyllenhaal as a villain is the one of Mysterio in “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, as the great illusionist who was capable of deceiving Peter Parker and transport his mind into his biggest fears. Mysterio is a classic villain from the Marvel comics, but this MCU film approached this character in a most realistic way. Instead of being a superior being who used real-life magic, - which would be implausible in every single way -, he used drones to control the perception of people, making them believe that he was a superhero, when, in fact, he wanted to destroy Spider-Man and become an Avenger. At the end, he “dies”, but before that he released a video to the entire world revealing Spider-Man’s identity as Peter Parker, something that had not happened in the previous iterations of the human crawler, marking an unprecedented event in any superhero film. I truly believe that he deceived his death, considering that he is the master of illusions, and will appear in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, this December, along with Tom Holland.
Otro gran papel de Jake Gyllenhaal como villano es el de Mysterio en "Spider-Man: Lejos de casa", como el gran ilusionista que era capaz de engañar a Peter Parker y transportar su mente a sus mayores miedos. Mysterio es un villano clásico de los cómics de Marvel, pero esta película del MCU abordó a este personaje de una manera más realista. En lugar de ser un ser superior que utilizaba la magia de la vida real, -lo que sería inverosímil en todos los sentidos-, utilizaba drones para controlar la percepción de la gente, haciéndoles creer que era un superhéroe, cuando, en realidad, quería destruir a Spider-Man y convertirse en Vengador. Al final, "muere", pero antes lanzó un vídeo a todo el mundo revelando la identidad de Spider-Man como Peter Parker, algo que no había ocurrido en las anteriores iteraciones del reptante humano, marcando un hecho sin precedentes en cualquier película de superhéroes. Sinceramente, creo que engañó a su muerte, teniendo en cuenta que es el maestro de las ilusiones, y aparecerá en "Spider-Man: No Way Home", este diciembre, junto a Tom Holland.

Finally, my favorite villainous role of Jake Gyllenhaal is none other than the one he portrayed in “Nightcrawler”, as Lou, an unemployed reporter who embodied the aforementioned Machiavellian phrase in all its glory. This statement is quite controversial, since people defend that Lou is not a villain, but rather an anti-hero. I could not be more opposed to this ideal. He was desperate to get a job and, once he got one, Lou was never going to let it go. He was thirsty for power and personal glory. He had a personal vendetta against himself. He had a clear motive to act against the main protagonist: himself. He was the protagonist, as well as the antagonist. Lou even let his partner die in a crime scene, just to get a good shot and story for his professional advantage. He was not an anti-hero; he was a villain for society and for himself. Lou succumbed into the temptation of being the worst version of himself and was not going to stop until he achieved his goals, even if that meant letting his loved ones die for a personal cause.
Por último, mi papel de villano favorito de Jake Gyllenhaal no es otro que el que interpretó en "Nightcrawler", como Lou, un reportero en paro que encarnaba la mencionada frase maquiavélica en todo su esplendor. Esta afirmación es bastante controvertida, ya que la gente defiende que Lou no es un villano, sino un antihéroe. Yo no podría estar más en contra de este ideal. Estaba desesperado por conseguir un trabajo y, una vez que lo conseguía, Lou no lo iba a dejar escapar. Estaba sediento de poder y de gloria personal. Tenía una venganza personal contra sí mismo. Tenía un motivo claro para actuar contra el protagonista principal: él mismo. Era el protagonista, y también el antagonista. Lou incluso dejó morir a su compañero en la escena de un crimen, sólo para obtener una buena toma e historia para su ventaja profesional. No era un antihéroe; era un villano para la sociedad y para sí mismo. Lou sucumbió a la tentación de ser la peor versión de sí mismo y no iba a parar hasta conseguir sus objetivos, aunque eso significara dejar morir a sus seres queridos por una causa personal.

So, yes, a villain is the most complex character of a film. If he is not well written, without a valid personal motive and with not real motivations, the movie is not going to work out and will be a disaster. The villain is the perfect balance and the sole reason for having a movie. Otherwise, the protagonist will not be challenged and, thus, there will be no limitations, which is what enthralls the audience. Wow, I really love movies.
Así que, sí, un villano es el personaje más complejo de una película. Si no está bien escrito, sin un motivo personal válido y con motivaciones no reales, la película no va a funcionar y será un desastre. El villano es el equilibrio perfecto y la única razón de ser de una película. De lo contrario, el protagonista no será desafiado y, por lo tanto, no habrá limitaciones, que es lo que cautiva al público. Vaya, me encanta el cine.
