Hi Marvel fans and lovers of superhero flicks, this is my first movie review in this community. I hope you enjoy reading this.
Shang-Chi's Beginning
The film tells the story of the protagonist Shang-Chi, how he is forced to confront his past and how he was drawn into his father's Ten Rings organization. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Destin Daniel also wrote the screenplay with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham. The screenplay was created from a story by Cretton and Callaham.
The film stars Simu Liu playing the titular character Shang-Chi. Other actors on this record-breaking franchise include; Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung.
Plot Summary
We see Xu Wenwu conquering different kingdoms and toppling governments with the use of the ten rings. The ten rings are mystical weapons that have been in existence for thousands of years and were wielded by Wenwu. The ten rings conferred on the user immortality and godly powers. Wenwu sets up the Ten Rings organization and runs all these acts in the shadows.
In 1996, the course of his life changes when he encounters a mysterious woman. She is the guardian of Tao Lo, a village that houses mythical beasts. She stops him from entering the village and during their fight, the two fall in love. The villagers have known about the atrocities Wenwu had committed and feared he would be a danger to them. Li leaves the village and her powers behind and goes to settle with Wenwu. They have two children together; Shang-Chi and Xialing. Wenwu retires the ten rings to have a family with Li.
Wenwu’s world is turned upside down when the rival group, the Iron Gang murders Li in Wenwu’s absence. The rage he feels has him becoming the man he swore never to be. He revives the Ten Rings and brutally trains the young Shang-Chi on how to become a killer. Shang-Chi grows to kill the leader of the Iron Fist who murdered his mother. He runs away from home to San Francisco and renames himself ‘Shaun’.
Shang-Chi's Inciting Incident
Think of a normal day in every American’s life that’s interrupted when random men ask for a pendant given to you by your mother. That’s how the perfect world built by Shang-Chi crumpled down. The pendant was stolen and raced against time to save his sister. He unknowingly led his father and his men to Xialing. They are all taken captive and taken back to
The father was convinced that the villagers in Tao Lo were holding his wife, their mother captive and he was going to do everything in his power to bring her back. This was a lie. The father was being manipulated by the Dweller-in-Darkness who wanted to be released from the gate protected by the warriors in Tao Lo.
The father releases the Dweller-in-Darkness and its minions but together; Shang-chi, Katty, Xialing, Ten Rings and the warriors defeat them assisted by the Great Defender -a water dragon.
Story Breakdown
Shang-Chi is a breath of fresh air regarding modern storytelling of non-white characters. The story was told by an Asian for Asians using that which makes them Asian. This was beautiful to watch.
The mythical creatures were so beautifully created that you would believe that the city of Tao Lo existed. The score that accompanied the fight scenes set the scene even better.
As I watched Shang-Chi, I could see that a detailed amount of research went into the creation of the fight sequence. If you love Kung Fu, you will be in awe of the masterpiece put together by the legendary Brad Allan.
Conclusion
If you grew up watching Jet Li and Jackie Chan’s martial arts conquest, you will definitely love the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest release, Shang-chi. Kung Fu was executed excellently in Shang-Chi. I loved the entire moment I spent watching Shang-Chi with my friend.
