Unfortunately your friends are right, this is not officially known as a Christmas movie, however it is considered by the audience as such, I love it for the same reasons as you, I LOVE Alan Rickman and his tremendous ability to play believable villains, I will never forget the scene where John McClane meets Hans (Alan) on the roof but Hans makes him believe he is one of the hostages.
