You probably didn't know that Samuel Horwitz (Shemp) Moses Horwitz (Moe) and Jerome Horwitz (Curly) were brothers, well yes, they were. Shemp and Moe started out working as labourers, but their talent as comedians was so great that they couldn't help but venture into the world of theatre, performing vaudeville routines in 1923. Vaudeville, from the French "vaudeville", is a theatrical genre that originated in France and consists of plots full of tangles, absurd situations and blunders.
Seguramente no sabías que Samuel Horwitz (Shemp) Moses Horwitz (Moe) y Jerome Horwitz (Curly) eran hermanos, pues sí, lo eran. They later hired violinist Larry Fine for their routines and thus formed the perfect comedy trio. They became very popular in 1930 and their act was called "Ted Healy and His Stooges" as it was Ted (a vaudeville actor and comedian) who wrote their routines.

However, Shemp left the group because he wanted to pursue a separate career (as a solo artist) and it was at this point that Moses Horwitz (Moe) suggested to Ted Healy that they include his younger brother Jerome Horwitz to join him and Larry to complete the trio again. Ted agreed, but suggested to Jerome, who used to have long curly brown hair, that he shave his head, he accepted the suggestion, so they ironically started calling him Curly and this became his stage name.

In 1934 the trio's contract with MGM (Metro Golding Mayer) expired and they also decided to part ways with Healy as there were many differences with him who seemed to have ego problems, so in the same year, the trio known as Larry Curly and Moe called themselves just "The Three Stooges" signed a contract with Columbia Picture to appear in short comedies, These were very successful and the Stooges' popularity rose considerably, something they were unaware of but the president of Columbia Pictures was well aware of, so he used them to generate revenue.

During the whole time they worked for Columbia Picture they ignored the magnitude of their popularity and to make matters worse the president of the company convinced them that, according to their contract, they had to make the television market for comedy episodes with his company for life. This happened during the 23 years that the stooges worked for Columbia, without asking for a pay rise because they felt coerced and as I said they didn't know their popularity and they didn't know their rights. When they stopped filming episodes with the company, in 1957, it was when Moe realised the deception and the amount of money they could have made and didn't make.

Although Curly was considered the favourite (unbeknownst to him as I said above) the most popular of the three and the favourite of many (and I completely agree) actor Jerome Horwitz, who played him, was very insecure about himself, to top it all off he was getting divorced again, This affected his confidence even more, so he started eating and drinking liquor to excess, which led to an imminent stroke in 1947 during the filming of one of the show's episodes, which is why his brother Samuel Horwitz (Shemp) was called in to replace him for the two years he still had left on his contract.

As Shemp was having a lot of success as a solo comedian, he didn't know whether or not to return to the Stooges, however, after much thought he decided to accept, although he said he would do so temporarily until his brother Curly recovered, however he did not recover and in fact died in 1952. Shemp was relatively successful within the programme but in my opinion there would never be anyone like Curly, unique in his style. However, the producer of The Three Stooges practically forced Shemp to do scenes acting as his brother Curly, in his own style.

In 1955 Shemp also died, but his death was from a heart attack, which left Moe devastated as he had lost both his brothers. In 1956 Columbia hired comedian Joe Besser to complete the trio, he agreed but insisted on adding a clause to his contract exempting him from being beaten up during filming. His character was not as well received by audiences as Shemp and of course Curly, and some even called Joe Besser "The Worst Stooge ".
