Hello everyone! Once again I'm back with a review of a movie by the awesome Clint Eastwood. Over the last weeks, I've been watching many of his productions, as he has definitely become one of my favorite film directors.
¡Hola a todos! Hoy vuelvo con una reseña de otra pelicula del genio de Clint Eastwood. Durante estas semanas, he estado viendo varias de sus producciones, debido a que se ha convertido en uno de mis directores favoritos del cine.
Gran Torino is a great story of redemption and the late blossoming of a man’s better nature. It also goes deep into matters of conscience and the endless human search for redemption. It sheds a ray of hope into issues such as racism and xenophobia, even if its handling of the Asian- American culture has led to both
praise and criticism.
Gran Torino es una gran historia de redención y del despertar tardío de lo mejor de la naturaleza de un hombre. Va a fondo en temas de conciencia y explora la permanente búsqueda de redención del alma humana. Arroja un rayo de esperanza en temas como racismo y xenofobia, aunque su tratamiento de la cultura asiático-americana ha sido objeto tanto de elogios como de críticas.
Meet Walt, an old racist who keeps his rifle ready to lock and load and his heart closed
The story follows Walt Kowalksi, a widowed Korean war veteran, who is clearly disgusted by the changes in the racial demographic of his neighborhood. He used to work in the American car industry and still maintains his 72 Ford Torino in perfect shape, which clearly constitutes his greatest pride. Following the death of his wife, Walt Kowalski (Eastwood) has nothing left but his dog to truly bond with. He does not get along with his two sons and their families although he seems to have had a very happy marriage.Conoce a Walt, un viejo racista que mantiene su rifle siempre listo y su corazón cerrado.
La historia sigue a Walt Kowalski, un veterano de la Guerra de Corea recientemente viudo, que aborrece los cambios de la demográfica racial de su barrio. Solía trabajar en la industria automotriz americana y aún mantiene su Ford Torino 1972 en perfecta forma, lo que constituye su mayor orgullo. Luego de la muerte de su esposa, Walt Kowalski (Eastwood) no tiene lazos afectivos más que con su perro. No se lleva bien con sus dos hijos y sus familias aunque parece haber tenido un matrimonio feliz.
Walt also receives visits from Father Janovich (Christopher Carley) of the local church as his deceased wife had asked the priest to 'keep an eye on him'. As in other Eastwood´s movies, the protagonist is engaged in a kind of flirting or even fighting with God, but Walt does not seem to find in religion the answers his heavy conscience needs.

Walt fills the emptiness in his life with beer and home repair, despising the many Asian, latin and black families in his
neighborhood.
Portrayed by Eastwood himself, he is an emblematic representation of an older, prejudiced America.
He dislikes and distrusts his Hmong neighbors, so he is not surprised when Thao Vang Lor tries to steal his Torino, pressured by his cousin as initiation into a gang.
Walt llena el vacío de su vida con cerveza y reparaciones domésticas, despreciando a las numerosas familias asiáticas, latinas y negras de su barrio.
Walt es una representación emblemática de una América vieja y prejuiciosa.

Things do not go well for Thao after failing to complete his Gran Torino mission for the gang and they get ugly when the gang threatens Thao and his sister as Walt is watching from his porch
Walt stands up to the gangsters, reluctantly becoming a kind of hero for the Hmong neighbors.
After that, his life becomes strangely close to these people and he gets more and more involved in their lives. His interaction with his Hmong neighbors is both moving and has a touch of humor.
Las cosas no van bien para Thao cuando falla en su misión Gran Torino para la pandilla y se ponen realmente feas cuando la pandilla lo amenaza a el y a su hermana mientras Walt mira desde su porche.
Walt se enfrenta a los pandilleros, convirtiéndose -sin querer- en una especie de héroe para sus vecinos Hmong.
Luego de ese incidente, la vida de Walt se vuelve extrañamente cercana a esa gente y se involucra más y más en sus vidas. La interacción con sus vecinos Hmong es a la vez conmovedora y tiene un toque de humor.

The process of redemption for Walt starts when his nobler side is driven to do good for his new friends. Once you let another person in, empathy facilitates communication and understanding. Kowalski ends up paying for his past sins, particularly those he committed in the Korean War, through selfless actions that dramatically lead to sacrifice.

El proceso de redención para Walt comienza cuando su parte más noble lo lleva a hacer cosas buenas por sus nuevos amigos. Una vez que dejas una persona entre, la empatía facilita la comunicación y el entendimiento. Kowalski termina pagando por sus propios pecados, particularmente los que cometió en la guerra de Corea, a través de acciones altruistas que lo llevan dramáticamente al sacrificio.
We only hate what we don’t understand
As we witness Kowalski’s journey from disdain to respect and affection towards his two Hmong teenage neighbors, we are shown clearly how prejudices can be overcome and cultural differences be bridged if we open the door to understanding.Sólo odiamos lo que no entendemos

What do I think Gran Torino represents?
Walt ‘s Gran Torino is a symbol of his masculine pride. Pride in the US automotive industry and factory labor. As deindustrialization arrives and changes his neighborhood, Walt holds on to the culture he identifies with.¿Qué creo que representa el Gran Torino?

When the film was released in 2008, some Hmong people appreciated the visibility Gran Torino gave their culture, while others believed that the film promoted false stereotypes. Almost two decades have gone by and amid the rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans, some people point out that the film promoted discrimination. Bee Vang, who starred alongside Clint Eastwood in 2008, playing the role of Thao Lor –has recently denounced the repeated use of racial insults and jokes. Let’s keep in mind that the story was told from the point of view of a racist protagonist who undergoes a process of growth and redemption.Paréntesis sobre la recepción asiático -americana de esta película

Gran Torino is not about a cultural conflict or racism. It is about moral growth.
It shows how reaching out for others can make us better people. It teaches us that is never too late to try to step into other people’s shoes, get rid of prejudices and communicate across boundaries and ignorance. And it also reminds us of an undeniable truth: Clint Eastwood is simply great both in front of and behind the camera.Gran Torino no es sobre conflictos culturales o racismo. Es sobre crecimiento moral.
Gran Torino nos muestra cómo acercarse a los demás puede hacernos mejores personas. Nos enseña que nunca es muy tarde para intentar ponerse en los zapatos del otro, liberandonos de los prejuicios.
