The Last Kingdom is a British historical drama television series, based on The Saxon Stories series of novels by Bernard Cornwell.
The story:
As a child, Uhtred witnessed the murder of his father and the defeat of his Saxon army by invading forces aboard Danish ships. On that day, the Danish warlord Earl Ragnar captured him and lodged him in a Danish camp alongside fellow captive Breda, a sharp-tongued girl. Years later, Uhtred is a brave warrior who received another tragic arc when his home was intentionally set on fire, killing his surrogate family, including his father's character, Ragnar. Now exiled - alone with the exception of Breda at his side - vows to avenge Ragnar's death and take back his homeland. But he must choose between his native country and the people who raised him, and walk a dangerous path between the two sides if he is to help the birth of a new nation and eventually restore the land of his ancestors.
My opinion:
In fact, I wasn't attracted to series about the Vikings, but I changed my mind when I watched the series "Vikings" that talked about the story of Ragnar Lothbrok. After that I heard about the series "the last kingdom" and again I hesitated before watching it, and again I changed my mind after watching this wonderful masterpiece. Uhtred of Bebbanberg, a wonderful character, is presented to us in the series in an attractive way, from a careless young man to a struggle for survival, then a warrior who defends his land and does not accept submission, to a man who takes responsibility and advises kings. Uhtred lived a struggle between his paganism and his Christianity, but this did not change his good essence in spite of all the hardships he experienced.
And one of the most important personalities is also King Alfred "the Great". What is this creativity? What is this mastery? He is indeed one of the best and smartest characters I have seen, the king who is passionate about science and knowledge, and who cares about the safety of his people and his country.
I loved the volatility of the relationship between Uhtred and King Alfred.
The series contains shocks and turns in the story and events, and also contains action. The fight scenes are not super high, but they are good.
If I were to compare it to the "vikings", I think "the last kingdom" is better.
The Last Kingdom consists of four seasons (and a fifth season is coming) and the number of episodes is not large and contains a lot of excitement and good dialogues, as for Vikings, its episodes are many and its events are too extended, its dialogues are less powerful than The Last Kingdom.
I advise fans of historical series to watch and enjoy it.
