I felt it was a decent homage to the original. They could have done a lot worse. The people not reacting to a blood-covered killer is fairly representative of today's society and I think that is what they were attempting to portray: How we are all so desensitized by the world that we live in and are much more interested in capturing a good photo for Instagram than we are in almost anything else, including saving our own lives.
The gore was good in this and some of the sequences such as when the girl is trapped under the floor and Leatherface is cutting through are shot really well. Overall this movie is worth watching but it certainly isn't an epic film by any means.
