Contest #3: What is the best horror movie you've ever seen?
Hi all, in this contest I would like to introduce the Indian mythological horror thriller "THUMBBAD".
I think you guys might be not familiar with this one, because this movie was lunched in Hindi (Bollywood). But I believe this movie worth a world wide recognition. The way of story telling and the idea they express is quite different from other horror movies. Thumbbad tells the story of human greed in a unique manner.
Thumbbad is a small village in Maharashtra, India. Vyshak's mother is a servant in a big manison, which is owned by a local lord Sarkar. Vyshak has a younger brother named Sadashiv. Except these four there is a monstrous old woman who is chained up a seperate room. The reason why his mother serves the lord Sarkar is, there is hidden treasure in the house. ' Goddess womb which produces gold coins'. Ok I will return to this part later.
A few days later sarkar died and the younger one Sadashiv got injured by accidently falling from a tree in a rainy day. The Monteros grandma was fed by the mother every day. But the day of the accident Vyshak was forced to feed her because mother need to take Sadashiv to the hospital. She tought Vyshak that, if she wake up from the sleep and tried to attack him, he should say "Hastar will come for you". At this moment of the movie we are not aware of who is Hastar and what is the sentence means.
On the way to the hospital he died. Later mother and Vyshak decided to move to Pune. They have decided to escape from all the miseries and pain, even though they know there is treasure some where. While watching the movie we even feels to get out from that place and atmosphere. The movie makes such a deep emotion in the viewers. On the way mother made Vyshak to not to return to the Thubbad in search of gold.
Years passed Vinayak grows up. Poverty and problems of his life made the way to Thumbbad again. He find that old Monteros women now become a tree. And he seek help from her to find the tressure. And she agree to help and as return he promised to burn her and to make an end to her misery. She also mention that he will be cursed to become immortal and turned into a monster like her if he touches the treasure i.e., Hastar.
Who is Hartar?
Hastar is the first and the most beloved child of the Goddess among the other 160 million gods. But he is greed for all the wealth and gold the mother goddess have. She is the god of prosperity and her womb is the Earth. Due to the greed of Hastar, the other gods attacked him. Goddess saved him on the condition that he could never be worshipped and would be forgotten by history. He was then pulled back to the womb of the goddess and was cursed to be hungry.
So next, Vyshak is going to take all the gold collected by Hastar by attracting him by food.Ther is a well which lead us to the womb.
Once he succeeded. And later he came to Thumbbad to steel Hastar when ever he need money. He become rich and prosperous. He also began to train his son. He always use dough dolls with grains to distract Hastar. But the greedy son suggest Vyshak to make more dolls so they can distract Hastar for a long time and collect coins as much as he needed. Both agreed and they jumbed into the womb by many dolls.
However, the two of them become trapped inside the womb when separate Hastars appear for each one of those dolls. So as a final hope to escape, Vyshak decide to tie all the dolls in his body so he the only one will get attacked. the plan worked out and the son escape from the well with out any gold coins. Vyshak got cursed and start to become a monster as the grandmother. So the son set a fire on him and make and an end.
These all caused due to the greed. The movie indirectly point out all the miseries and pain is caused due to the greed and urge of human kind. Hastar, grandmother and now Vyshak all are the cursed examples.
This movie exhibit an amazing cinematography and a marvellous VFX. Each and every frames from the movie pull us into the scene. I never enjoyed any other horror movies this much.

interesting. I didn't know anything about this movie. I am from latin amercia and it is difficult to find these productions. The images of the demon- god call my attention, I will do a search to see if I can find the film.
