Layer Cake is one of the movies that if you like crime and mafia, you will find it very enjoyable. The movie was produced in 2004 and directed by Matthew Vaughn, and the lead role was for Daniel Craig before he became James Bond, and this was one of the roles that made people take notice of him as a heavy actor.
The story revolves around a smart and successful drug dealer, who does not have a name in the movie, and this reflects that he is just a cog in a big machine. He is a man with a clear plan, he made enough money and wants to get out of the game safely, but like any crime movie, the world does not go smoothly that way. Suddenly he gets involved in complex operations because of his boss at work, and finds himself in the middle of conflicts between gangs and large fraud operations.
The beauty of the movie is that it is not just action or shooting and that's it, no, it has a coherent plot and smart dialogue, and it is full of characters with depth, not just copy-paste villains. Daniel Craig played the role professionally, and you feel that he is not just a criminal, but a practical man, who thinks more than he talks. There are other distinctive characters such as Genevieve (Sienna Miller) and Eddie Temple (Michael Gambon), and each of them has a role that adds to the story.
The filming and directing in the movie were excellent, the director used camera angles that give a sense of tension and realism, and the music was very appropriate for the events. The ending, without spoilers, was surprising and realistic at the same time, not a tired Hollywood ending.
In general, Layer Cake is a different crime movie, it does not follow the traditional line, and presents a smart story in an exciting style. If you like movies like Snatch or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, you will really like this movie!
