Hi hivers of the community of movies and TV shows, I think it's my first post here and I want to share my review of the dorama Goo Hae Ryung: The novice historian. This is a romantic drama of 20 chapters that last about an hour each. The story takes place in Joseon (currently known as Korea), at the end of the 17th century, early 14th century, where Goo Hae-Ryung, a 26-year-old noble, lives with her brother, and although for us being single at that age is not a problem in that dynasty, at 18 they began the marriage agreements, so this was extremely scandalous. In addition, Hae-Ryung knew how to read, being one of the few women who knew how to do it and worked as a reader of novels, although her readings were not exactly romantic.
Soucer
By an order from the palace, an admission exam is taken to hire historians for the first time in history (public officials in charge of registering the country's history specifically what the royal family does), and she who saw her future in everything but marriage, decides to present, being one of the chosen, from there begins a process of adaptation but also of adventures and unexpected twists inside the palace, where she along with her companions must learn to lead the life of a public official.
Before continuing, I feel the need to explain to you more or less how Joseon worked, so if it's your first time watching a period drama you'll have more context. In this dynasty there were, broadly speaking, two social classes: the nobles who had the purchasing power and held public offices; and the middle / lower class who were workers and, in the worst case, slaves. There was also the royal family that included the king, his mother, wife, concubines, brothers and children. It should be added that political power was centralized in the palace since all the departments were within its walls and, in theory, the king was subject to what his advisers said.
Characters
Goo Hae Ryung: She is a 26-year-old noble, passionate about reading, hates romantic novels and has a sense of justice. They describe her as "brave as a general and stubborn as a mule", breaking with the expected stereotype of a noble woman and showing great ability and knowledge to debate, being unable to remain silent.
Prince Yi Rim (Dowon):Son of His Majesty, he has lived his whole life confined to his palace. He loves writing romantic stories under the name of Maehwa, being his novels a craze throughout the capital. He has only one desire and that is to win his father's approval. Although he seems childish at first, he shows great character development, implying that he just needed the opportunity to develop.
Crown Prince Yi Jin: Eldest son of His Majesty, he is the regent prince (that is, he is exercising the attributes of the king), he is brave and has a lot of affection for his brother Prince Dowon. He is the one who gives women the opportunity to be historians, and tries to put an end to the second chancellor. I could say that he is perfect but no, he does not have a good relationship with the crown princess, that is, his wife, being distant with her.
Min Ik-Pyung: He is the second chancellor of state, who accompanied His Majesty in the rebellion against the deposed king. He is cold, calculating and only cares about power. Something to highlight is his shrewdness, he always seems to be one step ahead.
Min Woo-Won: First historian of the royal decree office, he is the son of the second chancellor and appears to be serious and unshakeable. His sense of justice is iron, able to contradict the king if he knows he is defending the right thing. Although he looks so firm, he has a sad life story that you can discover as the episodes go by.
King Yi Tae: King for 20 years, he took the throne after overthrowing his brother, father of several children but in the series we only know two of them. He is someone grumpy and angry with life, although he got what he wanted in the end it is not enough for him, he is bothered by the existence of Prince Dowon and that the heir prince has fair criteria.
Historians: Here I include the rest of the officials of royal decrees, all of them have a funny touch, dedicated to work and a little to gossip, and it is that part of writing history is to listen to everything. At the beginning they were not the best but then they learned to live and work with the historians.
Apprentices:Three noble women who, together with Hae-Ryung, were selected to be historians, two of them cheerful and smiling and one the daughter of the minister of personnel, kind but with very marked limits, she does not like that they help her and also works hand in hand with the second chancellor.
My opinion
It is a drama that has the right touch of comedy, romance and tension, although it tells only one story it presents several plot arcs that allow us to know other characters and gives them a development to the protagonists. I consider that it is a criticism to how the woman was and is sometimes perceived, the entry of the historians to the palace caused great commotion and they had to deal with rejection and hazing, and even they were called secretaries as a way of mockery, because it was difficult to consider them equal to a man with a public office, despite the fact that they also presented an admission exam, similar to the public official exam that most nobles presented to opt for a position.
And this is where Hae-Ryung's peculiarity stood out, she overcame all these situations and in a way encouraged her other companions to resist, it was not very expected that a woman had high tolerance for alcohol or that she would refute what a superior rank official said, but she had a marked critical and duty sense that got her into some trouble but defended what was right.
Despite the fact that from the beginning she said that she had no romantic interest and that she hated romantic novels, because they seemed unreal and absurd to her, I shipped her with several officials and it is that she managed to generate close relationships with her colleagues from her authenticity and I thought what a nice couple they would make. I must confess that I identified a lot with her because she was seen as someone strange who thinks for herself and more than once I have gotten into trouble for having a critical vision.
It should be noted that of the royal family, the only one I could not understand was the king and believe me I tried so if you see it and understand it tell me, I feel that he lived in an internal conflict and acted for his benefit without thinking about his people or his children. On the contrary, the heir prince tried to govern with justice and be fraternal with his relatives, and Prince Dowon from his solitary palace knew how to relate to his eunuch and his courtesans.
Even at one point it is shown that despite not having political training, he knows the Confucian scriptures and is intelligent when reflecting on them, for me even though he was already an adult inside he behaved like a child who dreamed of knowing love, he is everything the opposite of Hae-ryung dreamer and faithful believer in love, although what he longs for in the bottom is to understand why his father treats him with so much contempt.
According to my perception, the historians give the funny touch to the story, very hardworking but also very witty and they were treated as family, although at the beginning they were evil with the apprentices later they already formed a good work team and even there are several moments when they demonstrate how a group united and organized can achieve what it sets out to do (I will not give details about this because it would be a spoiler), I would definitely work in royal decrees.
As for the scenarios, they are all beautiful and the costumes, impeccable. Something I like a lot is that without neglecting the political issue that is usually the center of historical dramas, it presents other interesting aspects and situations that, although related, are not boring or repetitive. For my review it will not surprise you to say that I love this drama with madness, I have seen it 3 times and every time I enjoy it equally or even more, I invite you to see it and if you have already seen it, tell me what you thought.
