EMANCIPATION MOVIE REVIEW - A tale lost to time

As a of sucker of history and western movies, writing a review on the movie "emancipation" felt rewarding as the movie embodies a tale lost to time, The movie is inspired and based on true life story of an enslaved man journey into being a soldier.

And this role was portrayed by Will Smith (Peter). Peter is a resilient man, Christian and a family man who is seen in the opening scene partaking in a Christian ritual with his family, nothing that intense relax, he was washing the feet of his family while praying, an act done by Jesus to his disciples which symbolizes humility and leadership.

While enjoying this quiet and intimate time with his family, the plantation overseers came with news of peter being sold to the construction company with the intention of him joining ongoing railway construction.

saddening by this outcome and the thought of his new reality, peter was reluctant to heed to his new assignment. in the bid of separating peter from his family, the door was ripped out from its hinges because peter showed defiance but was persuaded by the beating he took or the gun pointed at his daughter demanding his co-operation. four seconds later a half-conscious peter could be seen bundled away in a cage to the construction site defining a rocky start for our actor.
while being scurried away, a short conversion could be heard about peter being the best blacksmith so that explains his value and relation to his previous owner.

At his new placement peter wasted no time in sticking out with the slavers by causing unnecessary friction, he showed no fear to the slavers, stood up for his fellow slaves and this caught the eye of famous slave hunter Fassel played by Ben foster. Fassel took it upon himself to break peter sprit claiming that he is Peter's God and his existence belong to him.

The high stacks of Fassel games could actively been seen to take a toll on peter, coupled with punishment from the other slavers due to his character. When every last hope seem lost, Peter overheard the slavers discussing Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation thereby freeing all slaves!!!.

The lost hope was restored, peter was struggling with processing this new information. could slaves be free? what does a free slave do? He quickly dispatched his new initiative of escaping to his fellow brother in chians.

Due to quick thinking and a bit of luck peter and a handful of slaves escaped under heavy gunfire and begin their way to Lincoln Army.
Majority of the movie covers this hot pursuit which span across days.
The slave overseer were determined to make an example out of the escapee.

Peter and his gang would rather die that give away their new found freedom. I really enjoyed this chase, an injured peter battling the harsh conditions of nature, outsmarting his previous owners,he even fought an alligator at one point. The movie covers a lot of gory details, deaths in the quest of freedom. Quick thinking on our hero path and element of luck made him reach the camp.

My favorite scene was when the commander questions peter about the strips on his back saying all he sees is disobedience and pose the question are you fighters or are you runners? and Peter responded to him in anger "I fight them, they beat me, They whip me, They string me up,They sell me, They throw me down a well, They bring me out and beat me again and I fight them again.
They cut me, They burn my neck, my Feet, break the bones in my body but they could never break me." Just goosebumps.

Peter determination and unwillingness played a key factor in the battle of freeing the slaves. This an enjoyable movie with lessons to learn.

I really enjoyed this movie as much as I did reviewing it. Thank you for your attention.
