¡Sunny! Una película koreana con un acercamiento interesane a la amistad adulta.
Hi! today's movie is a little old, from 2011, but is new for me since I watched it recently with a friend of mine.
Korean movies are very different from American or Latin ones, even though Korean Pop culture has been very Americanized. They have different morals, so there is less explicit romance and love triangles, and more situational drama, life drama, I like that, I find it more entertaining to see how people deal with things like working their way up to their goals than watching them focus on toxic relationships.
In this case, non of those are the drama, this is a movie about a group of friends who went to high school together but went their separate ways after a complicated situation. In the present, one of them is dying from lung cancer, one of the other found her by a coincidence, and now are trying to fulfill the last wish of Ha Chun-Hwa and reunite their whole team one more time.
Hola!!! la película de hoy es un poco viejita, del 2011, pero es nueva para mí ya que la vi hace poco con una amiga mía.
Las películas koreanas son muy diferentes a las americanas o latinas, a pesar de que la cultura Pop koreana se ha americanizado mucho. Tienen una moral diferente, por lo que hay menos romance explícito y triángulos amorosos, y más drama situacional, drama de la vida, eso me gusta, me parece más entretenido ver cómo la gente se enfrenta a cosas como trabajar para conseguir sus objetivos que ver cómo se centran en relaciones tóxicas.
En este caso, nada de eso es el drama, esta es una película sobre un grupo de amigas que fueron al instituto juntas pero que tomaron caminos separados tras una situación complicada. En el presente, una de ellas está muriendo de cáncer de pulmón, una de las otras la encontró por casualidad, y ahora intentan cumplir el último deseo de Ha Chun-Hwa y reunir a todo su equipo una vez más.
SPOILER ALERT I'll give a lot away since I know this is a movie that not everybody will go to see, so you can have a good time reading without having to watch it, but also I left out a bunch of important stuff so you can have a good time if you decide to watch it :D
ALERTA SPOILER Voy a desvelar muchas cosas ya que sé que es una película que no todo el mundo va a ir a ver, así pueden pasar un buen rato leyendo sin tener que verla, pero también he dejado fuera un montón de cosas importantes para que tengan un buen rato si deciden verla :D
My opinion about this movie is that was great in casting, the young and old versions look believable. It showed a bad side of the 80s debauchery, it was common to smoke and use drugs in plain sight, some of the girls smoked and in the other team, some did drugs. Besides that, the girls' relationship was good in showing how immature teenagers are, but how hard the repercussions of their actions can hit their adult life.
Mi opinión sobre esta película es que fue genial en el casting, las versiones jóvenes y adultas parecen creíbles. Mostró el lado malo del libertinaje de los 80, era común fumar y consumir drogas a la vista de todos, algunas de las chicas fumaban y en el otro equipo, algunas se drogaban. Además, la relación de las chicas fue buena para mostrar lo inmaduros que son los adolescentes, pero lo duras que pueden ser las repercusiones de sus actos en su vida adulta.
SUNNY
One of the most interesting aspects of this movie is that we get to see the characters as they are in the present and how they were in high school. In the beginning, we see Im Na-mi in her role of wife and mother, she deals with her daughter's attitude and the household. She visits her mother at the hospital and we see there the way all the elderly are kept together and having fun watching Tv. When she heads out, notices a patient giving a hard time to the nurses, she's so in pain that kicks and punches, but what especially caught Im Na-Mi's attention was the name on the door "Ha Chun-Hwa", the name of one of her best friends in high school and the leader of the team.
Uno de los aspectos más interesantes de esta película es que podemos ver a los personajes como son en el presente y como eran en el instituto. Al principio, vemos a Im Na-mi en su papel de esposa y madre, se ocupa de la actitud de su hija y del hogar. Visita a su madre en el hospital y allí vemos cómo todos los ancianos se mantienen unidos y se divierten viendo la televisión. Cuando sale, se da cuenta de que una paciente está haciendo pasar un mal rato a las enfermeras, está tan dolorida que da patadas y puñetazos, pero lo que llamó especialmente la atención de Im Na-Mi fue el nombre en la puerta "Ha Chun-Hwa", el nombre de una de sus mejores amigas en el instituto y la líder del equipo.
It wasn't until the next visit that she enters the room and confirm that the patient is indeed her friend, they talk, catch up a bit, when Im Na-Mi leaves she asks if Ha Chun-Hwa needs something, she's rich, so she said nothing, but then changes her mind, she wants to see "SUNNY" one more time, Sunny is the name the group of friends had.
No fue hasta la siguiente visita que entró en la habitación y confirmó que la paciente es efectivamente su amiga, hablan, se ponen al día un poco, cuando Im Na-Mi se va pregunta si Ha Chun-Hwa necesita algo, ella es rica, así que dijo que nada, pero luego cambia de opinión, quiere ver a "SUNNY" una vez más, Sunny es el nombre que tenía el grupo de amigas.
When Im Na-Mi starts looking for them, she does so in the high school, and as she walks inside, we see the surroundings changing to a more colorful and loud one, entering the 80s with a teen Im Na-Mi in her first day of high school in Seul. That day she was attempted to be bullied by two girls, but Ha Chun-Hwa, who wasn't there when Im Na-Mi introduced herself to the class, immediately stopped them, then a funny fat girl beside them (that was her role, to be a funny fat friend) explained everything to Ha Chun-Hwa. Im Na-Mi was so awkward and that made Chun-Hwa laugh. After that, they went to take lunch together and meet the other girls one by one, each with their role in the group.
Cuando Im Na-Mi empieza a buscarlas, lo hace en el instituto, y al entrar, vemos que el entorno cambia a uno más colorido y ruidoso, entrando en los años 80 con una Im Na-Mi adolescente en su primer día de instituto en Seul. Ese día intentaron intimidarla dos chicas, pero Ha Chun-Hwa, que no estaba allí cuando Im Na-Mi se presentó a la clase, las detuvo inmediatamente, y luego una chica gorda y divertida que estaba a su lado (ese era su papel, ser una amiga gorda y divertida) le explicó todo a Ha Chun-Hwa. Im Na-Mi era muy torpe y eso hizo reír a Chun-Hwa. Después de eso, fueron a almorzar juntas y a conocer a las otras chicas una por una, cada una con su papel en el grupo.

They had a fight with another team and that day Im Na-Mi was a key, first, she brought her dad's tool bag by accident, providing the weapons, and she is a diabetic, was very hungry and shaking from it, which look scary, and canalized her grandmother swearing talent, scarring the other team's leader (Ha Chun-Hwa said all of that was Im Na-Mi being possessed by a ghost haha) that day she became a part of the team, the number 7.

Tuvieron una pelea con otro equipo y ese día Im Na-Mi fue clave, primero, trajo la bolsa de herramientas de su padre por accidente, proveyendo las armas, y ella es diabética, estaba muy hambrienta y temblando por ello, lo cual parece aterrador, y canalizó el talento para los insultos de su abuela, asustando a la líder del otro equipo (Ha Chun-Hwa dijo que todo eso era Im Na-Mi siendo poseída por un fantasma jaja) ese día se convirtió en parte del equipo, la número 7.
To name their team, they sent a letter to the radio station describing who they were and their spirit, they named them Sunny and gave them a song that the present Im Na-Mi hears with nostalgia. We jump back and forward several times, getting to know mostly Im Na-mi´s life and her attempts to find the other friends.
She get to find Jang-Mi first, who cried a lot when she visited Ha -Chun-Hwa. It was her who suggested pay to a personal investigator to find the other friends.
Para nombrar a su equipo, enviaron una carta a la emisora de radio describiendo quiénes eran y su espíritu, las nombraron Sunny y les pusieron una canción,la actual Im Na-Mi escucha con nostalgia. Saltamos hacia atrás y hacia delante varias veces, conociendo sobre todo la vida de Im Na-mi y sus intentos de encontrar a las otras amigas.
Primero consigue encontrar a Jang-Mi, que lloró mucho cuando visitó a Ha -Chun-Hwa. Fue ella quien sugirió pagar a un investigador personal para encontrar a las otras amigas.
Each of them was doing completely different from what they thought in high school, Im Na-Mi was very poor at first but she married well, became an artist, and now was a Seulité; Jang-Mi was an insurance seller, Jin-Hee was also well married, rich, and a lady who never say an improper thing, Geum-Ok was repressing her violent instincts and being used by her sister in law; Bok-Hee has a daughter she can't see, and she works as a prostitute because she was miss Korea, but it wasn't that much money and being that her whole life, she didn't know better. Ha Chun-Hwa was married, with no kids, and then divorced, she's rich but lonely, and she regrets being the leader, she didn't keep her promise to look for all of them and stay together even in the distance. Finally Su-Ji, nobody knows a thing about her, since she was supposed to be a model, but the incident that separated all of them took it away from her.
Cada una de ellas hacía cosas completamente diferentes a las que pensaban en el instituto, Im Na-Mi era muy pobre al principio pero se casó bien, se hizo artista y ahora era una Seulité; Jang-Mi era una vendedora de seguros, Jin-Hee también estaba bien casada, era rica y una señora que nunca decía una cosa indebida, Geum-Ok reprimía sus instintos violentos y era utilizada por su cuñada; Bok-Hee tiene una hija a la que no puede ver, y trabaja como prostituta porque fue miss Korea, pero no era mucho dinero y siendo así toda su vida, no sabía nada mejor. Ha Chun-Hwa estuvo casada, sin hijos, y luego se divorció, es rica pero solitaria, y se arrepiente de que como lider no cumplió su promesa de buscarlas a todas y permanecer juntas aún en la distancia. Finalmente Su-Ji, nadie sabe nada de ella, ya que se suponía que iba a ser modelo, pero el incidente que las separó a todos se lo quitó.
They had a presentation, dancing, but they couldn't do it because a girl from another team who was on drugs attacked them, she went for Im Na-Mi but all of them were targeted, by this moment Su-Ji, who didn't like Im Na-Mi at first, was now good friend with her. She went from behind to control the aggressive girl but that crazy one had a broken bottle and cut her face. All of them screamed, cried, authorities were called, but sadly, they all paid, not just the one attacking. They were all expelled and that meant some of them even had to move towns, hence why now they didn't know about each other. They promised to keep in contact but we know what happens with high school friendships you can't see frequently.
The last they knew was that Su-Ji attempted suicide but she was okay.
Tenían una presentación, bailar, pero no pudieron hacerlo porque una chica de otro equipo que estaba en drogas las atacó, fue a por Im Na-Mi pero todas eran su objetivo, en ese momento Su-Ji, a quien no le gustaba Im Na-Mi al principio, ahora era buena amiga de ella. Fue por detrás a controlar a la chica agresiva pero esa loca tenía una botella rota y le cortó la cara. Todas gritaron, lloraron, llamaron a las autoridades, pero lamentablemente, todas pagaron, no sólo la que atacaba. Todas fueron expulsadas y eso hizo que algunas tuvieran que cambiar de ciudad, de ahí que ahora no supieran unas de otras. Prometieron mantener el contacto pero ya sabemos lo que pasa con las amistades de instituto que no se ven con frecuencia.
Lo último que supieron fue que Su-Ji intentó suicidarse pero estaba bien.
In the present, Su-Ji was the only one that couldn't be contacted before Ha Chun-Hwa passed away. But the others had so much fun, they even helped Im Na-Mi to avenge her daughter from some bullies. Four full grown-up ladies smashed the crap out of some high school girls; that was so much fun and life for Ha Chun-Hwa, who in high school used to love the fights against the group "Girl's Generation" their "nemesis".
En el presente, Su-Ji fue la única que no pudo ser contactada antes de que Ha Chun-Hwa falleciera. Pero las demás se divirtieron tanto que incluso ayudaron a Im Na-Mi a vengar a su hija de unas bullies. Cuatro señoras completamente adultas se encargaron de destrozar a unas chicas del instituto; eso fue muy divertido y lleno de vida para Ha Chun-Hwa, a quien en el instituto le encantaban las peleas contra el grupo "Girl's Generation", su "némesis".
They had so much money they didn't go to prison or something, they just got away with it after a little time with the police. So far so good, they got to put together almost all the team and knew about their situations, all but Su-Ji who was still unlocated.
Sadly, they ran out of time, Ha Chun-Hwa died, they made all they could to make Su-Ji wherever she was, knew about the funeral.
Tenían tanto dinero que no fueron a la cárcel o algo así, simplemente se salieron con la suya después de un tiempo con la policía. Hasta aquí todo bien, consiguieron reunir a casi todo el equipo y sabían de su situación, todas menos Su-Ji que seguía sin localizar.
Lamentablemente, se les acabó el tiempo, Ha Chun-Hwa murió, hicieron todo lo posible para que Su-Ji donde quiera que estuviera, supiera sobre el funeral.
They waited and she didn't come, so they went ahead to greet. At that moment a lawyer came to read Ha Chun-Hwa's will, she made Im Na-Me the leader, Jang-mi was an insurance seller, so she got insurance for all of them and now she can be the sales queen. Jin-Hee the vice-leader, she complained that she always was but Jang-mi said it was her, the lawyer asked if she was upset to read the rest which was "you are rich, bitch" haha, so she didn't need more presents. Ha Chun Hwa gave the possibility of a job to Geun-ok and left an apartment so Bok-Hee can live with her daughter, also she left covered all the expenses for the little girl, rehab for Bok-hee, and vocational training to get her back on track.
Esperaron y ella no vino, así que se adelantaron a saludar. En ese momento vino un abogado a leer el testamento de Ha Chun-Hwa, hizo que Im Na-Me fuera la líder, Jang-mi era una vendedora de seguros, así que consiguió un seguro para todas ellas y ahora puede ser la reina de las ventas. Jin-Hee fue nombrada vice-líder, se quejó de que siempre lo fue pero Jang-mi dijo que era ella, el abogado le preguntó si estaba molesta para leer el resto que decía "eres rica, perra" jaja, así que no necesitaba más regalos. Ha Chun Hwa le dio la posibilidad de un trabajo a Geun-ok y dejó un apartamento para que Bok-Hee pueda vivir con su hija, también dejó cubiertos todos los gastos de la niña, rehabilitación para Bok-hee, y formación profesional para que se recupere.
They had to do one thing, the dance Ha Chun-Hwa wanted them to perform, to the song they didn't get to show in high school "Sunny". They happily did it. I found them very interesting in their grown-up movements, like, you can tell they aren't kids anymore, it's like that thing when you can't help but clap your hands to a song so you know you are old now haha. That was a great and very touching way to say goodbye to their leader, even more, when at the end, they were all of them together.
Tenían que hacer una cosa, el baile que Ha Chun-Hwa quería que hicieran, con la canción que no pudieron mostrar en el instituto "Sunny". Lo hicieron con gusto. Me parecieron muy interesantes sus movimientos de adultas, se nota que ya no son niñas, es como esa cosa cuando no puedes evitar aplaudir una canción y sabes que ya eres mayor jaja. Fue una forma genial y muy emotiva de despedir a su líder, más aún, cuando al final estaban todas juntas.
I told a lot but I left out way more, so if you are interested now, go ahead and watch it, it's very funny, it also has a lot of versions even when is not very famous, I didn't hear about it before, even when I was a K-pop and K-drama fan. Oh! Before I leave, if you are a K-drama fan, you will love to see Kim Young-Ok being very funny, swearing, and not trying to die in a movie for once haha.
Conté mucho pero dejé fuera mucho más, así que si están interesados ahora, vayan y véanla, es muy divertida, también tiene muchas versiones, no es taaan famosa, no escuché de ella antes, aun cuando era fanática del K-pop y del K-drama. Oh! Antes de irme, si eres fan de los K-dramas, te encantará ver a Kim Young-Ok siendo muy graciosa, diciendo palabrotas, y no intentando morir en una película por una vez jaja.

I watched this movie with my mom when this movie came out! It was such a good movie, I like all the actresses in the movie their acting was really good ;)
Yes! the actresses did a great job, I loved both young and adult Ha Chun-Hwa, they showed a great personality
I guess your post will serve as recommendation for me to watch the movie. Anyway, it's been long I watch a movies, now I have to give this one a trial. I just hope it's worth it as you said
