Sing's actions attract the attention of the real gang, who confront the villagers. Gang reinforcements arrive but they are all quickly confronted by three slum tenants namely, Coolie, Tailor, and Donut who reveal that they are actually kung fu masters. However, fearing the Ax Gang's retaliation, the mistress of the slum house throws the three out.
Then Sum's brothers captured Sing and Bone and intended to kill them because they disguised themselves as gang members. However, Sing and Bone can handle this and Sum's brother allows them to join the gang on the condition that they kill someone.
Sing then flashes back to his childhood when he was tricked by a homeless man into buying martial arts pamphlets with his remaining money. After practicing the Buddhist Palm technique in the pamphlet he bought, Sing tries to save a mute girl named Fong (Eva Huang) from bullies but ends up getting beaten up. Sing is adamant that heroes never win and decides to become a villain.
Sing and Bone return to Pigsty Alley to kill the Lady who owns land in the area. But their plan failed and they were expelled from that place. Sing was injured in the process then retreated to the traffic stand where his body mysteriously healed in a short time
Meanwhile, Brother Sum, intending to take revenge on the citizens of Pigsty Alley, they hire two harpists who use magical martial arts skills to use musical instruments as their weapons. They succeed in eliminating three kung fu masters but are defeated by Proprietor and Proprietor's husband, who reveal themselves to be skilled kung fu fighters as well.
An annoyed and disappointed Sing tries to rob an ice cream seller but discovers that he is actually Fong. When Fong recognizes him and tries to offer him a lollipop, he crushes it and leaves in shame. Then Brother Sum offers Sing immediate gang membership if he uses his lock-picking skills to free Beast (Leung Siu-lung), a killer with legendary kung fu knowledge and he is admitted to a mental hospital. Sing takes the Beast back to the Ax Gang headquarters.
Brother Sum is initially pessimistic about summoning the Beast, due to his arrogant attitude and disregard for his surroundings and careless appearance, but quickly changes his mind when the Beast stops the bullet in mid-air.
Beast meets the owners of the casino next door, engaging in a heated fight with them that ends in a stalemate. Sing, realizing his mistake, attacks the Beast, who angrily retaliates. The Owner and Landlord catch Sing who is unconscious and flees. The Beast eliminates Brother Sum and takes over as leader of the Ax Gang.
I remember I was basically forced to watch this movie by my roommate at the time who insisted it was absolutely epic. I relented and to this day it is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Never heard of it. oooh! you think you mean God of Gamblers? King Gambler is only producing a movie made in 1937 and I don't think Chow was alive then :) I love hidden gems. Thanks for this.
