I confess that I surprised myself, completely excited to see Werewolf. That is, a horror film about such an emblematic character or monster, so much of my childhood, that character that remains in our memory to the point that inevitably, when we hear dogs howling, we think of him, of that feeling when we were told about him as children.
However, it seems that little by little they are killing the Horror genre, it is my favorite genre of films, but I don't understand why they are failing me lately. I recently saw Nosferatu, and I was so disappointed that I didn't even dare to write my post. Now, another disappointment to see Leigh Whannell's Werewolf, which made me very excited as Blumhouse Productions was also involved, which has given us so many good films.
Confieso que me sorprendí a mi misma, completamente emocionada por ver Hombre Lobo. Es decir, una película de terror sobre un personaje o monstruo tan emblemático, tan de mi niñez, ese personaje que queda en nuestra memoria al punto de que inevitablemente, cuando escuchamos a los perros aullar, pensamos en él, en esa sensación cuando de niños nos contaron sobre él.
Sin embargo, parece que poco a poco están matando al género de Terror, es mi género de películas preferido, pero no entiendo por qué me están fallando últimamente. Hace poco vi Nosferatu, y quedé tan decepcionada que ni siquiera me animé a realizar mi post. Ahora, otra decepción ver el Hombre Lobo de Leigh Whannell, que me hizo mucha ilusión al estar involucrada también Blumhouse Productions, que nos ha dado tantos buenos films.
Leigh Whannell's Werewolf begins by telling us about Blake, a boy who lives with his father and goes hunting, when they sense the presence of an unknown animal. Blake overhears his father talking to a friend on the phone about this strange creature, and that they must hunt it to protect their families.
Then, we will see Blake (Christopher Abbott) as an adult with a small family living in San Francisco, and he receives a notice that he inherits the house where he grew up in a rural area of Oregon, after the disappearance of his own father, who is presumed dead. So, he travels with his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner), and his daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth). During the night on the road they have an accident and Blake is attacked by an unrecognizable animal, they flee to the house he inherited that was nearby, where they take shelter as the creature prowls outside. Progressively we will see Blake behave strangely until he turns into a Werewolf.
You'll get to see what happens to Blake, what happens to the creature that's stalking them, and how the family struggles to survive.
Hombre Lobo, de Leigh Whannell, empieza contándonos sobre Blake, un niño que vive con su padre y van a cazar, cuando sienten la presencia de un animal desconocido. Blake escucha cuando su padre habla con un amigo por teléfono sobre esta extraña criatura, y que deben cazarla para proteger a sus familias.
Luego, veremos a Blake (Christopher Abbott) ya adulto con una pequeña familia que viven en San Francisco, y recibe un comunicado de que hereda la casa donde creció en una zona rural de Oregón, tras la desaparición de su propio padre, quien es dado por muerto. De manera que, viaja junto a su esposa Charlotte (Julia Garner),y su hija Ginger (Matilda Firth). Durante la noche en el camino tienen un accidente y Blake es atacado por un animal irreconocible, huyen hacia la casa que heredó que estaba cerca, donde se resguardan ya que la criatura los merodea afuera. Progresivamente veremos a Blake comportarse extraño hasta convertirse en un Hombre Lobo.
Podrán ver lo que sucede con Blake, qué pasa con la criatura que los acecha y cómo la familia lucha por sobrevivir.
This movie and the way they treated the Werewolf reminded me a lot of the movie Antlers: Dark Creature where the father of a family had become a monster, but his children loved him. This Werewolf is something like that, a monster born from a kind of illness that he got when he was attacked and scratched on the arm by another Werewolf. His transformation is seen progressively, during that same night, that is, he simply got sick and turned, he might as well have been a zombie and that's it.
It's not a tribute to Werewolf, and the characteristic aspects like turning with the full moon, being aware of this, turning into a monster and returning to his human form, none of that.
Of course, I didn't expect it to be as literal as before and that they had to kill him with a silver bullet, or a stake in the chest like vampires; but turning on the full moon was something I really did expect.
Esta película y el tratamiento que le dieron al Hombre Lobo, me recordó mucho a la película Antlers: criatura oscura donde el padre de una familia se había convertido en un monstruo, pero que sus hijos lo amaban. Este Hombre Lobo es algo así, un monstruo que nace de una especie de enfermedad que le dio al ser atacado y arañado en el brazo por otro Hombre Lobo. Su transformación se ve progresivamente, durante esa misma noche, es decir, que simplemente se enfermó y se convirtió, igual y hubiese sido un zombie y ya.
No es un homenaje a Hombre Lobo, y los aspectos característicos como convertirse con la luna llena, tener conciencia de esto, convertirse en monstruo y regresar a su forma humana, nada de eso.
Claro, no esperaba que fuese tan literal como antes y que lo tuviesen que matar con una bala de plata, o una estaca en el pecho como a los vampiros; pero convertirse en luna llena fue algo que realmente si esperaba.
Horror Atmosphere: The setting in the middle of the countryside, the tall trees, the practically isolated house and the colors of the night, managed to transmit a lot of tension, a dark and gloomy atmosphere without being exaggerated or in bad taste.
Wolf's Point of View: It was interesting on a visual level, to be able to appreciate what the werewolf saw. In his transformation, this being Blake experiences physical changes corresponding to the character of the wolf, and in addition to seeing those changes, director Leigh Whannell showed us shots from his point of view, how he sees colors, the distortion of sound, lights, etc. and it was interesting, I didn't imagine that he would give us that narration, which he also did without sensationalist special effects.
The sound: The experience of seeing Werewolf, and especially in the cinema, was an impressive resource from Leigh Whannell, since with it he managed to put us in the movie. It was not just the howl, but through the different howls we can understand the evolution towards the beast. The creaking of his body, of the house, the opportune silences, envelop us until we feel with the characters the fear, the loneliness, the desperation, it was absolutely good.
Atmósfera de Terror: El ambiente en medio del campo, los árboles altos, la casa prácticamente aislada y los colores de la noche, lograron transmitir mucha tensión, un ambiente oscuro y tenebroso sin ser exagerado o de mal gusto.
Punto de vista del Lobo: Fue interesante a nivel visual, poder apreciar qué era lo que veía el hombre lobo. En su transformación este ser Blake experimenta cambio físicos correspondientes al personaje del lobo, y además de ver esos cambios, el director Leigh Whannell nos presentó planos desde el punto de vista de él, cómo ve los colores, la distorsión del sonido, la luces, etc. y fue interesante, no imaginé que nos regalaría esa narración, que además lo hizo sin efectos especiales sensacionalistas.
El sonido: La experiencia de ver Hombre Lobo y sobre todo en el cine, fue un recurso impresionante de Leigh Whannell, ya que con él logró meternos en la película. No fue solo el aullido, sino que por los diferentes aullidos podemos entender la evolución hacia la bestia. Los crujidos de su cuerpo, de la casa, los silencios oportunos, nos envuelve hasta sentir con los personajes el miedo, la soledad, la desesperación, fue absolutamente bueno.
Julia Garner's performance: I think that as an actress she doesn't have many expressions, she doesn't use her face to convey different emotions, such as the helplessness of not having a good communication or relationship with her daughter, the love for her husband, her fear, her desperation, when she resolves situations wrapped in fear, she practically did all those states with the same face.
In my opinion, the only character I liked of hers was Ruth in the series Ozark, because the character was cold and there she managed to convey that, but in the rest of her projects that I have seen, I haven't really liked them.The Transformation of the Werewolf didn't happen as I expected, as we all know that the Werewolf transforms at night with the full moon. This is a characteristic of that horror character, of that monster, that although it is human, it changes its form with the full moon. In this film it was a gradual transformation and it simply transforms into a beast and there is no turning back. I must confess that, as a horror lover, I feel that this character or monster was missing or taken away from me, and I didn't like that.
The family drama I feel like it was just laid out and that was it, I couldn't get involved with them, I couldn't sympathize or empathize with them as a family, I think mainly because of what I mentioned about Julia Garner's performance, but also because of Christopher Abbott's performance, who although he did show a closer dynamic with his daughter, I think he lacked a more credible tone, he seemed to be reading or saying things he memorized from the script.
La actuación de Julia Garner: Creo que ella como actriz no tiene muchas expresiones, no utiliza su rostro para transmitir las diferentes emociones, como la impotencia de no tener una buena comunicación o relación con su hija, el amor por su esposo, su miedo, su desesperación, cuando resuelve situaciones envuelta en miedo, todos esos estados los hizo prácticamente con la misma cara.
En mi opinión, el único personaje que me ha gustado de ella ha sido de Ruth en la serie Ozark, porque el personaje era frío y ahí si logró transmitir eso, pero de resto en los proyectos de ella que he visto, no me ha gustado realmente.La Transformación del Hombre Lobo no se dio como esperaba, como conocemos todos que el Hombre Lobo se transforma de noche con la luna llena. Esta es una característica de ese personaje de terror, de ese monstruo, que aunque es humano cambia su forma con la luna llena. En esta película fue una transformación gradual y este simplemente se transforma en bestia y ya no hay regreso. Debo confesar que, como amante del terror, siento que le faltaron o le quitaron a este personaje o monstruo, y no me gustó eso.
- El drama familiar siento que lo plantearon y ya, no logré involucrarme con ellos, no logré simpatizar o empatizar con ellos como familia, creo que principalmente por lo que mencioné sobre la actuación de Julia Garner, pero también por la actuación de Christopher Abbott, que aunque si se mostró una dinámica más cercana con su hija, creo que faltó que sea más creíble, parecía estar leyendo o diciendo las cosas que memorizó del guion.
I don't recommend it. In fact, I watched this movie with my children. I was excited because I was going to see a monster from my childhood. I told them about it and it turned out not to be what we knew about it.
For me, it didn't work even if it was called something else, like Infected Man or something like that. Even then, it's not a good movie. It didn't have good acting, I didn't empathize with the characters, it didn't have much action, it didn't pay homage to the Wolf Man, the ending was too obvious, everything that could be wrong. I only want to mention what I mentioned in the point about What I liked.
We just have to wait for Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, at the end of this year, and here I am again going to trust in Horror Cinema. I hope it doesn't disappoint.
No la Recomiendo, de hecho esta película la vi con mis hijos, yo emocionada porque iba a ver un monstruo de mi infancia, le conté sobre él y resultó no ser lo que sabíamos de él.
Para mí no funcionó ni siquiera si se llamaba de otra forma, como el Hombre Infectado o algo así, incluso así no es una buena película. No tuvo buenas actuaciones, no empaticé con los personajes, no tuvo mucha acción, no rindió homenaje al Hombre Lobo, fue demasiado obvio el desenlace, todo lo que podía estar mal. Solo rescato puntualmente lo que mencioné en el punto de Lo que me gustó.
Solo queda esperar por el Frankenstein de Guillermo del Toro, a finales de este año, y aquí voy otra vez a confiar en el Cine de Terror, ojalá no defraude.

Hola amiga, cuando vi el tráiler de esta peli, me llamo la atención justo porque actuaba Julia Garner, me gusto mucho su interpretación en la serie Ozark, le voy a dar una oportunidad y la veré, vamos a ver si me convence, aunque por lo que nos cuenta creo que también quedare decepcionada jaja, . Excelente reseña, saludos.
Me pasó igual, cuando ví a Julia Garner me emocioné también, pero eso fue la misma cara de principio a fin y fue cuando me dí cuenta que eso le jugó a favor con el personaje de Ruth en Ozark, porque Ruth tenía esa frialdad y falta de expresión. Pero en otros proyectos donde Julia ha trabajado, ya no le funciona... Mi opinión...

No puedo creer que no te gustó nosferatu. Debes explicar por qué? Yo hace poco vi un film de este tema sobre hombre lobo protagonizado por Kit Harington y aunque me gustó su actuación, la trama del film no y la historia desarrollada tampoco. Así que cuando vi este título pensé que sería igual, pero después de leerte y saber que no te gustó nosferatu, tengo mis dudas. Así que le daré una oportunidad apenas pueda. Saludos! 🧡
