The movie [The Martian] is based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir.

As a movie set in space, it is mentioned along with Interstellar, but it can be said to be a different style of movie from Interstellar.

Rather than being set in a vast universe like Interstellar, this movie tells the story of an astronaut (Matt Damon) who is left alone on Mars but does not lose hope and survives.

The actors who appeared in Interstellar reappeared in The Martian, and it is interesting to compare the two.

Dr. Munn, who was the most capable doctor in Interstellar, but betrayed the expedition team and behaved selfishly, appears as Mark Watney, the protagonist of the Martian.

Murphy, who was saving mankind by reading a message from his future father, appears as Captain Lewis, who leads the Mars expedition.

The movie shows Mars, where astronaut Mark Watney lives, and NASA, who is busy working to save him.

We can focus on his survival process and actions on Mars during the long running time of two and a half hours, and feel a sense of relief and fulfillment through the process of saving him dramatically.

The title of the movie, 'Martian', means 'Martian'.

In other words, it is a title that shows that Mark Watney, who was left alone after being hit by an antenna while moving to a spacecraft for takeoff, tried to survive until the next Mars rover came, and as he adapted to Mars, he became a 'Martian'.

Most of the content of The Martian is fiction. On Earth, since humans have not yet set foot on Mars, it is not yet realistically possible from the beginning of the content of going to Mars to explore and being left alone.

However, knowing that such an act is a scientific fact that is not yet possible, the content in the film is more interesting and stimulating.

Wouldn't it be possible to grow plants if we really reach Mars?, Is that what Mars really looks like? It arouses curiosity in the audience.

The appearance of Mars, which is like a vast red vast desert where Mark Watney lives, looks similar to the red Mars we imagined.

The appearance of Mars, their base, and the actions of Mark Watney spark our imaginations as if it could actually happen.

The filming location that was reborn as Mars in the movie is Wadi Rum, a desert area located in the south of Jordan.

In Wadi Rum, it was used as a filming location for the movie [Aladdin] as well as the Martian.

It is surprising that a topography similar to that of Mars, a planet other than ours, exists on Earth.

It is said that the original location chosen for the filming of The Martian was in the Australian desert, but it was changed to Wadi Rum.

Mark Watney is stabbed in the stomach by an antenna core and left alone on Mars, tens of millions of kilometers from Earth, but does not despair or give up hope of life.

He wittily records his situation in video, starting with the words 'I'm leaving a video because I might die here'.

His positive and unyielding appearance makes the viewers smile.

This seems to be the point where the movie Martian is evaluated well.

The setting of being left alone on Mars is also different, but the main character who does not lose hope and humor in it gives us an interesting and quirky charm.

Now he wonders what else to throw away, and he continues to look forward to his actions.

When you think of a Martian, potatoes are probably the first thing that comes to your mind.

In order to become self-sufficient in the lack of food on Mars, it is very interesting to see the actual cultivation of potatoes after many trials and errors by converting the base into a plastic greenhouse and planting potatoes.

There was an incident where the device exploded while trying to make water, but after trial and error, Mark Watney did not give up and succeeded in creating a suitable environment for potatoes to grow.

The subject of potato appears throughout the film, and Mark Watney allows him to survive the 600-day Mars period, and is also his research subject and friend.

In a video recording at the end of the film, Watney even goes as far as to say that he will be giving a lecture on thousands of recipes for cooking potatoes.

The camcorder screen that appears in the middle of the movie seems to be a device that makes his presence on Mars more realistic.

Mark Watney continues to fight for his own survival.

Researchers who continue to watch his movements at NASA continue to raise the question, 'Where else is he moving?'

The film delightfully shows through a completely new environment, Mars and botanist Mark Watney, who is left alone, that anything can be accomplished with perseverance and hope, no matter how difficult the situation.

He himself wasn't sure if he could continue to live on Mars.

If he hadn't succeeded in growing potatoes by trial and error, he would have died alone on Mars if he hadn't been able to find a communication device he was using in the 1900s and get in touch with my NASA.

Even when he meets the Hermes on an ascending ship and is rescued, his will to become an Iron Man also makes the audience laugh in an urgent situation.

Even if he was determined to do the same, if he was impatient and afraid, he would not have been able to meet Captain Lewis and be rescued.

Viewers can admire him until the very end for his unflinching appearance.

On his way to the ascent ship to be rescued, he says:

( Here, wherever I go, I am the first.

When I get off the rover, I'm the first person to step on it

Even if you climb that hill, I will be the first

No one has been here for 4.5 billion years

But now, I am. )

After spending nearly 600 days on Mars, he's finally ready to board the ascendant and head into space.

Although he knows it will be impossible and he will also be in great danger, the film shows that he did not give up his last hope by inserting Abba's upbeat song 'waterloo' into his last days on Mars.

It is a very tense and anxious situation, but I think this was also a factor that showed that he was taking it positively.

Watching the scene in the second half, I was shaking my shoulders involuntarily.

His various actions on Mars and hectic movements on NASA fill the running time of two and a half hours so that you do not feel bored.

Mark Watney's unpredictable behavior gave us a sense of curiosity and tension as to what the outcome of this behavior would be, making us sweat and laughing with joy when he was rescued by the Hermes and many citizens cheered .

It could have been dark and negative, but the Martian was witty with Matt Damon's upbeat performance.

If you want to see the novel and humorous story of Matt Damon's life on Mars, the Martian is a must-see.

( I am a space pirate. )
