Hello Fellow Hivers!
This is @affliction back again to talk about a Splinterlands battle. And this week we are covering one featuring the rule set COUNTERSPELL
If you are not sure what Splinterlands is, make sure to give this articles a read and at the end you will find some information to get started with the game.
ABOUT THE RULE SET:
All monsters receive the Magic Reflect ability at the start of the battle. Enemy monsters that attack with magic receive damage back.
- Damage returned is equal to the damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up.
- Magic monsters with the Reflection Shield ability do not take damage from reflected magic attacks.
- The Amplify ability increases damage.
Magic has always been the meta in Splinterlands and most of the times our go to monsters to win us battles are magic attackers. What makes the magic monsters strong?
- Magic deals damage directly to hp bypassing the armor unless it's Void Armor
- All magic monsters are able to attack from any position of the line up.
When playing Splinterlands we are often either joining the dark side and playing magic spam line ups or building a line up to counter magic.
Counter magic has never been very easy. One of the go to abilities to counter magic has always been the Magic Reflect ability. And to make the gameplay interesting @yabapmatt and team actually introduced a rule set where all the monsters are basically having this ability along with their own abilities and we do not need to worry much about countering magic.
For our today's battle, we will be talking about a Gold League battle from the Modern format and talk about our line ups and strategies for the rule set.
BATTLE RULES :
- Mana Cap : 13
- Rule sets :
Melee Mayhem: Melee attack Monsters can attack from any position.
Lost Legendaries: Legendary Monsters may not be used in battles.
Counterspell: All Monsters have the Magic Reflect ability.
- Available Splinters :
Death
Dragon
THE LINE UP :
Position | Card | Mana | Level | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|
Summoner | 4 | 6 | As the summoner we went with a level 6 Thaddius Brood even though that was not the best summoner to play as we are not likely to face magic attack and Thaddius Brood is a summoner played as counter magic. Honestly, we actually played a Thaddius as that was the only leveled up summoner I had available between Dragon and Death. | |
Position 1 | 6 | 5 | As the tank, we are playing a level 5 Cursed Windeku, the 6 mana tank with 3 melee damage, 3 speed and 10 hp combined with super useful abilities like Thorns and Heal making it one of the most played tank in the game specially in low mana matches such as this one. | |
Position 2 | 8 | 3 | In the second position, we are playing a level 8 Crypt Beetle that comes with 2 melee damage,2 speed, 3 armor, 5 hp as the base stats. It also has the ability of Shield. The card plays very well as low mana tank, but since we have Melee Mayhem rule set in the battle, the card can attack the first monster of the opponent line up. |
THE OPPONENT LINE UP :
Position | Card | Mana | Level | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|
Summoner | 4 | 5 | Like us, the opponent too went with Thaddius Brood as the summoner probably due to same reason as mine. | |
Position 1 | 6 | 5 | For the tank, the opponent too is playing Cursed Windeku which is not surprising. Though this one is a gold foil, it is a level 5 like ours which means we are looking at a close battle. | |
Position 2 | 3 | 3 | In the second and last position, the opponent is playing the ever reliable Uraeus. The level 3 copy of the card has 2 melee damage, 3speed, 1 armor and 3 hp with Sneak. |
THE HIGHLIGHTS :
- Round 1:
In the first round as expected we see a close battle with no causalities.
- Round 2:
In the second round however, our Cursed Windeku bettered the opponent's and eliminated it.
- Round 3:
And the battle was over only in three rounds, as our Cursed Windeku proved to be too strong for the Uraeus and it eliminated Uraeus to get the second kill of the battle and bring us the victory.

STRATEGY:
In low mana matches I tend to focus all my attack to either first position or last position of the opponent line up and I tried the same strategy in this match up.
When I went with Thaddius Brood as the summoner, the obvious choice of tank in the battle was Cursed Windeku because of it's well rounded offensive and defensive abilities. Since, the battle did not favor magic thanks to this week's featured rule set Counterspell, we were sure to be facing melee or ranged monsters in opponent line up and playing Crypt Beetle with Shield seemed a perfect fit with the remaining 3 mana specially since it will be able to target the opponent's front monster because of the Melee Mayhem rule set.
MVP:
Card | Kills | Contribution |
---|---|---|
2 | Our Cursed Windeku without a doubt was the MVP of the battle with it's solid durability because of Heal and amazing offensive display with 2 kills in the battle. Not to mention the Thorns ability which did half of the job when it came to demolish the opponents as the both the opponent monster were melee monsters. |
