One of Lisbon's most iconic structures, the Belém Tower dates back to the 16th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Originally constructed as a fortress at the mouth of the Tagus River, its purpose was to protect the city from invaders. The Belém Tower stands as a symbol of Europe’s Age of Discovery, when Portugal led voyages that explored the new world. An interesting fact is that after the 1755 earthquake, the river’s course changed, positioning the tower closer to the mainland.
