Fast forward to 1217, when Col Ross Abbey, a significant ecclesiastical structure, was founded in the village. Although much of the abbey fell into ruin following the Reformation, the remnants are meticulously preserved by Historic Environment Scotland, with the remaining church functioning as a parish to this day.

As the narrative unfolds, the industrial history of Col Ross comes to the forefront. The village became a thriving hub for coal mining during the 16th and 17th centuries, with Sir George Bruce at the helm. Notably, he established the world's first underwater coal mine at Col Ross, a remarkable feat of engineering that captured the imagination of the time.
