The monasteries are extraordinary. Originally, supplies were hoisted up using a pulley system, while access was primarily through ladders. Now, we ascend the nearly 200 stairs that lead to the Monastery of Varlaam, built in 1350! The extensive history captures my imagination as I reflect on the generations that have walked these same paths.
A Feast for the Senses
After exploring the breathtaking grounds and lighting a candle for my late grandparents in one of the Orthodox churches, we delight in the manicured gardens that adorn the monasteries. The views of the rocky terrain paired with the monastic architecture are nothing short of spellbinding. As we prepare to leave, we decide to take in one last sight of Meteora at sunset—an experience that is simply unforgettable.
