The Alawites primarily inhabit the coastal regions of Syria and the Jebel al-Alaoui mountain range. Often referred to as Nusayris, a term that can carry negative connotations, their identity has evolved more prominently under the name Alawites since the 1920s. Confusion sometimes arises because Alawites are distinct from the Alevi community in Turkey, despite the phonetic similarities.
