Part 3/8:
Despite the absence of Vikings during the Roman Empire's zenith, Rome did possess some knowledge of Scandinavia. Led by Emperor Augustus, the Romans harbored ambitions of expanding their borders into what is today modern Denmark. In 5 AD, Augustus deployed the Roman Navy to venture up the coasts, seeking allies for an eventual campaign in the north. Unfortunately, their ambitions were thwarted when Augustus mismanaged forces during the infamous Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. This setback forced a Roman retreat, thus cementing Scandinavia's isolation from Roman imperial ambitions.
